Ford Bronco (1996 and older) SUV | Crossover

Ford Bronco (1996 and older) SUV | Crossover

DESCRIPTION

The Ford Bronco is a sport utility vehicle that was produced from 1966 to 1996, with five distinct generations. The original Bronco was an ORV (Off-Road Vehicle), intended to compete primarily with Jeep CJ models and the International Harvester Scout. The redesign of the second generation Bronco in 1978 was based on a shortened full sized F-100 pickup. It had a removable top and forward folding rear bench seat, similar to the competing Blazer.

(1980 - 1986) The Ford Bronco received a major redesign for 1980, coinciding with the F-Series pick-up truck. The new Bronco was shorter, and had cosmetic changes along with powertrain, suspension and other odds and ends.

(1992 - 1996) The Ford Bronco, along with the F-Series truck, was updated for 1992. The new Bronco was redesigned with safety in mind, incorporating front crumple zones, rear shoulder seat belts, a third brakelight embedded in the removable top, and after 1994, driver-side airbags.

Strength:

Big but nimble, durable but comfortable, great visibility, most mechanical parts are the same as F150 (important as it is a discontinued car). Drives great in snow and mud, laughs at most hills, even loaded with stuff. Remarkably quiet with the windows closed.

Weakness:

Though reliable and loyal, will punish you for negligence on maintenance issues. Complicated electricals can cause "mysterious" problems. My heater works poorly, but that's just mine. Running in overdrive too much in slowish traffic can clog things up over time. Try to use overdrive mostly on the freeway. Burns more gas than newer, smaller SUVs, but you could crush them and kick dirt over them like a dog burying a pile of... well, you get it. It aint a RAV4 or a tracker. Those are Bronco-biscuits.

A big, tough, comfortable, polite unit. I am 6'6" and it is the most comfortable vehicle I have owned. I can drive it all day and not get tired, and though it has broken on occasion, it has never left me stranded. It got me home with a clogged exhaust system and ruined sensors. It got me home with the tranny unable to find high gear (Vehicle Speed Sensor in differential, 40 bucks). 351 is polite and quiet, but chain it to Hawaii and you could pull it to Seattle with the right tires. Don't let the look fool you. These things are so easy to drive your granny could handle it (and would want to keep it). Maintain it and it wont let you down.

it's a gass guzzler

I have driven many trucks and by far the bronco was the most reliable. I have the eddie bauer with 191,000 miles on it and it still runs like the day it rolled out of the factory. For the first four years it was used to pull a large boat and never struggled pulling it out of the water. i've seen newer fullsize suv's struggle pulling an equal load

Massively strong. Loaded cargo area with 1300 Lbs of bricks and still had 3" of travel. Cheap to run. Rooooomy. Very reliable.

Rough ride - but to be expeced.

I have had my Bronco for 10 years and began to consider somthing new. Mind you, my Bronco has never been in the shop for and thing other than maintenince. After reading the horror stories about the reliability of new suves, I have decided to stick with my Bronco for many more years.

i had to restore my dad bronco 2 so it took me about the whole summer vacation to get it all done right. It was sitting in brush for 4 years. I put about 500 fory parts and the exshaust and than i repainted it grays with graphs on the side. looks awesome

I love my little truck. I can get through almost anything. I take it mudding and off road and it has never broke down. I put in dual exshast many people told me that it looks funny but other say it is loud for a v-6. In my little community everyone can hear me start it up and take off. It has about 88,000 on it and gets about 16 mpg. I am currently looking into a 1992 Ford Bronco a full size and that has 90,500 on it. It is black and tan interior is excellent. It has american racing rims and big muddin' tires. Like the rest of the broncos the full size has rust on the tailgate but its a ford so the hell will it. I have always been a really big fan of Ford (my dad rasied me good) and now all i want to drive are broncos. I really don't like the idea that ford does not make them awesome trucks anymore

Strength:

good power from the 3.9L V6, plenty of pickup from a stop, decent gas mileage, smooth ride on the interstate, great handling

Weakness:

I dont think I have enough space to say all I want to say here...so...just dont buy a Dakota!

I purchased this vehicle 5 years ago at 19,000 and I have had nothing but trouble with it from the beginning. I would strongly recommend against purchasing a Dodge Dakota used or new. Because of this truck I will never buy a chrysler product again. Here are a few things that have gone wrong with it: 19000-dash pad came unglued above cupholders (under warranty thankfully); 40000-air conditioning went out; 70000-transmission had to be rebuilt; 112000-rear brake cylinders started to leak; the tape player has never worked properly; and the grand finale...112500-total loss of oil pressure and I might have to replace the engine. I have treated this truck very well all of its life and it has been nothing but a pain in the arse! It has been a give-take relationship. I recently bought a Ford Bronco because I needed a larger 4x4 for work and I am very pleased with it. If you are looking for a good truck I would dish out a few extra bucks and get a Tacoma, Tundra, or an F-150/Bronco. Dont waste your money on a Dodge. By the way mine is for sale if you are interested, ha!

Everything! They are tough!

Weakness:

They don't make them anymore. Once they start rusting....look out! The body usually is gone with cancer before parts on the truck are "broke in."

I have owned lots of Bronco's. I love them! I think they should be in a hall of fame under "Last REAL truck ever made." The "off-road" vehicles that are out now....what a joke!! It is getting more difficult every year to find a Bronco and now I have my husband hooked on them. He now understands why I have to have one. We buy our Auto Traders religiously each week scoping for the "next one". I am torn apart each time I have to part with one. I've been called "Bronco Girl" cause if I wreck them or kill them, I just get another. Not one single time have I ever been stranded and not one of my trucks has ever been lazy enough to come home on a roll-back. The '90 that I have now has not taken as much of abuse as previous Bronco's I've owned. It has 202,000 miles on it and it stills runs excellent. It is so reliable and rugged! I have been wishing for years that Ford would bring this line out again, but I'm glad I haven't got my wish. I'm afraid they would take short-cuts and it would be nothing less than disaster. If they could replicate the durabilty, power, and overall craftmanship of this vehicle....I would be first in line!!

Weakness:

15 year old push button and auto locking 4x4

I bought this truck in august of '03. I love it to death. When it comes to power, strengh, muscle and performance, the Bronco takes the cake. Ford really out did themselves when they started production of the full size Bronco. I own an '88 Ford Bronco(full size) 4x4 with a bad ass 302 under the hood. I'm running 31x11.00R15 Super Swamper Thornbirds, and this truck will go anywhere i steer it. I haven't had any problems with it, except for a leaky hose where the trans. fluid runs to the radiator. This was the previous owners fault. I've added dual exhaust(cut the muffler and left the cats)with 3 1/2 inch tips and a K&N air filter, and don't forget the 'birds. I also installed a pioneer CD player and a CB radio with a 9' whip antenna. It has the signature Ford red interior with captains chairs and a center console. The Bronc' is an automatic with push button 4 wheel drive. It also has auto locking hubs, which I didn't exspect on an '88. The inside is roomy and spacious ,I just wish the bench backseat reclined to make a bed(wink, wink). This truck combines the best of both worlds, with SUV passenger accomadations, and a tailgate and cargo bed of a truck. I love wheeling with my friends and girlfriend and i love the vesatility of a pickup truck. This Vehicle fits me like a glove. I recommend it to anybody who enjoys trucks and off-roading.If you want to be bigger, stronger, and more aggressive than anyone on the road, then you've gotta getcha a Bronco.

Good in bad weather conditions. Intimidating. Easy to make regular maintenance.

Weakness:

Well, I bought this Bronco back in 1999. And to be honest, I LOVE it. The Bronco is the ebst truck Ford has ever come out with. It's a crying shame they don't make 'em anymore. This is the real meaning of the word TRUCK in my opinion, not too big, and yet not small in any way imaginable. The fact that it's not a million miles long doesn't take away from the fact that this thing is a BEAST in every sense of the word. It has a modified 351 Cleaveland, 5.8L engine and with the installation of my new glass packs. It roars when pushed a little, and purs like a kitten when idling. Truly a truck everyone should have the pleasure of driving. it rides good, has a huge power capacity (damn thing could probably tow battleship if it wanted to). Also, just the feeling of being above most every other car on the road out there, and the fact that you can take it OFF the road from time to time gives ya a huge power trip.

Strength:

Good power; The Bronco is a truck that still gets looks from other motorists, and it has go-anywhere ability that is hard to find these days. Dependable and built rock solid. Stands out from the crowd because they are few and far between.

Weakness:

MPG and the difficulty of getting groceries in and out. And the fact that they are not made anymore.

First my general thoughts, and then my review of the big Bronc'. Here's the deal. I grew up around Bronco's, both my dad and stepdad owned a few of them in the 80's, so it was always a vehicle I was interested in. After college I went through several Fords: An 89 Ranger (junk), an 89 Bronco II 4x4 (much better), a 94 Explorer Sport 2x4(Okay), and a 2001 Explorer Sport 4x4 totally loaded out (complete junk). Half-way through the lease I took the '01 Explorer back to the dealer, wrote them a $4,400 check and gave them the keys...I hated it that bad. It couldn't tow anything, got horrible gas milage, the ride would jarr your teeth loose, and the entire interior rattled and squeaked after four months on the road, and these were just some of the problems. Ford should be embarrassed for allowing that piece of garbage to hit the roads of America. Anyway, I finally decided to get the vehicle I should have owned all along: my 95 Bronco; nearly spotless and only 64,000 mi. Now I am a happy man. It is a great truck. No, it is not a behemoth family-hauler like the Suburban or Excursion, but it was not designed to be. It was designed to get you where you needed to go off-road, all the while making a good daily driver vehicle. And off-road is where it is most at home. Last winter me and a buddy and a couple o' 12-packs of beer took the Bronco places that would have had most 4x4s shaking in their CV boots. The Bronco rocks! It is a shame that Ford no longer makes this breed of animal, instead they focus the $$$ on the cream-puff Explorer/Expedition lines, both of which, by all accounts that I have read, are a joke off-road. Apparently their "4x4" systems are primarily designed for the soccer-mom who encounters a dusting of snow while taking the kids to school. Ford now ignores the fact that there are those of us who want/need a serious off-road truck/SUV. In my opinion, they should scrap the 2-door Explorer Sport, and design from the ground up a third generation Bronco. But they won't...a short wheel-base SUV w/ 2-doors that is based on a true truck platform isn't mass-marketable enough. I guess if you look on the bright side, we Bronco owners have in our hands a piece of automotive history and should be pleased. Now my review: The truck rocks! If you don't have one, get one. I plan on driving mine till the wheels fall off...and when they do, I will bolt 'em back on and keep on going. It has great manuverability both on and off-road. Gas milage could be better, I average between 15 to 16 mpg on any given tank of fuel, which really is not that far off from most new full-sized trucks...I had a '98 Dakota 4x4 and got the same, and it couldn't do half the things my Bronco can. My truck has the 351W, and though the horsepower figures are not terribly high by todays standards (210hp or so, depending on what information you are reading), the torque is abundant, I believe around 345 ft/lbs out of the stock motor...plenty for pulling most anything. The only modifications I have made so far is a K&N filter and the addition of 31x10.50 BF Goodrich All-Terrain TAs (killer tires!). The only repair I have encountered is rebuilding the rear differential, which set me back about $350, less than I expected. The ride is firm but comfortable...and FAR better than the '01 Explorer I had. Interior room is very good...no you are not going to cram in 9 adults like you could in an Excursion, but I don't even know 9 people I would want in the same vehicle with me at the same time! I love taking the top off in the fall and heading to the lake to camp or taking my friends up into the mountains to do some exploring. My girlfriend's 6 year-old daughter loves my Bronco...she always asks me to take her to school in it.
