It's cute & was nice the 1st year I had it.
Weakness:
Gas mileage, HISSING NOISE WHEN APPLYING BRAKES ALLLLLL the time, have replaced brakes twice, rotors twice, engine problems, stalling, countless recalls .... its just been one hassle after another. Never will buy a ford again!!! I purchased this car brand new in 2001. I didn't start experiencing major problems until early 2003. Now I absolutely HATE this car. I have every problem that I've read in these reviews (stalling, brakes, random noises while driving, cd player not ejecting at times, gas mileage, etc. etc. etc.) but one problem I have, I haven't seen reported. Is anyone else experiencing a HISSING NOISE when they press on the brakes? My best friend also has a 2001 Escape and is experiencing the same problems. We now refer to the car as the "Snake Escape" because of the loud obnoxious noise. I've taken it to the shop twice and no one can figure out what the problem is. The 2 shops I took it to weren't Ford dealers, so that is my next stop. I don't recommend ANYONE purchase this car ..... its awful!! Ford puts cheap parts on this vehicle so be prepared to have it serviced. I was very excited to purchase this SUV as I had good reviews for magazines and friends who drove them. The Vehicle I purchased must be a LEMON. Because after only 1 year of driving the car I had to put brakes and rotors on it. Also, have had the air bag light come on 3 times. It has been covered by the warranty but that will soon be over. I would not recommend this car to anyone ( not even my worst enemy). FORD (Fix Or Repair Daily) still stands true for this brand of vehicle. Even though this car is affordable after all the money you pour into it for service you might as well go out and buy a Chevy Tahoe or more expensive SUV. |

Sedan-like handling, cargo room, gas mileage, good center console design. Nice exterior styling. Cargo liftgate is easy to lift, especially with the window that can be independentley opened.
Weakness:
Lots of plastic in the interior(to be fair it is high quality plastic, just hard to the touch). 1 touch driver window can be hard to operate. Bought the car in April, Love it! Everything about it is great. Took a trip from Washington to CA and back and never had a uncomfortable moment, the seats are very nicely contoured and of a very high quality fabric, I have heard that the leather is somewhat uncomfortable. The only problem we have had so far is the left two speakers seem to have short circuited and now emit a fuzzy noise only heard when you tearn the speaker balance to those two speakers-not a big problem, all we've had to do is turn the balance to the left untill we get it fixed. Incredible cargo space for such a small car, feels roomy on the inside, with the front seats all the way back we've had people who are 5'9 sit comfortably in the back seat. Perfect car for 3 people and a few dogs. Nice enterior design, only complaint is the hard plastic that abounds, but is low in gloss and substantial to the touch. All in all a great affordable choice. |

Name it. It's been in the shop on average five times a year since I bought it new. If you're thinking of an Escape - think again. What a piece of junk. I bought this car new for my wife to drive. It has been nothing but problem after problem. Beyond the recall issues, the outer tie rod went bad, the steering box is leaking fluid and the key security system had to be reprogrammed three times before finally working properly. All this on a car that has only 45,000 miles. I've finally had enough and am putting it up for sale. I have tried working with the dealer and Ford regioanl and corporate offices to get some satisfaction, but their basic attitude is, "you're out of warranty." I have four other cars and none have had as many problems and all have more miles. |

Enough room for 4 people to comfortably ride, sporty look at a reasonable price, 6 CD Changer, Gas milage
Weakness:
Break dust, too noisy at higher speeds, seats are too uncomfortable Had it about 14 months. Never had to take it in to get anythign fixed. Hate the interior. Just took a 6 hour trip for vacation and the leather seats were very uncomfortable. It gets up and goes good enough for me. Just enough room in it. Not too big, not too small. Has a weird smell to it even though I put air freshener in it. When I turn on the air it smells kind of dusty. The sunroof sticks sometimes and it's kind of scary. But I've never had it completely stop on me. It's VERY loud on the highway- the break dust is HORRIBLE. The ignition is in a really bad spot b/c it's hard to find when you're in a hurry. The gears get stuck sometimes and it's tough to get it from park to reverse/drive. Similar Products Used: 2002 Explorer |

My 2001 Ford Escape has been a great vehicle for me. Some of the complaints I do have, however, are: 1. Very limited leg room for my 6'2" husband. He complains about leg cramps whenever he drives. 2. Windshield wipers wipe in the opposite direction - the passenger wiper brings all the debris to the drivers windshield, somewhat obstructing the view while driving in rain. 3. My Hazard & Rear Defrost buttons are located in such a spot, where if the vehicle is in Drive, you can not see them because the shifter covers them up. 4. The seatbelt reminder chimes, even if the vehicle is in Park. 5. And, last but not least, my BIGGEST complaint, is the location of the ignition key-hole. I literally have to bend over to the side, and look where I have to put my key in. It is not lit, so therefore, it makes it even harder to find. My Escape does get great gas mileage, compaired to my previous Explorer, but I wish it had a larger gas tank. It also has great power, being a V6. It works well for a family of 3 and 1 large dog. |

Strength:
The size and power of the vehicle is perfect. I have plenty of room inside for myself, my family and all our gear. I've towed a U-haul trailer without any problems. I can't complain about the gas mileage either, especially with the gas prices the way they are.
Weakness:
The only real gripes I have about this vehicle are the padding of the seats and the fact there isn't a locking mechanism for the gas tank. The ignition switch is also alittle bit of a problem. It sits so low on the column, that you always have to look for it. This is made worse at night when the interior light is off. I find myself having to open the door or turn on the map light so I can see where the ignition is. The seats could use a little more padding. They're alright while running around town, but literally a pain in the butt on a long road trip. I suppose I could install an after-market lock on the fuel tank door, but it would have been nice if it was there to begin with. I purchased my 2002 Escape XLT about 5 months ago and I love it. It doesn't look like a very big vehicle, but once you get in it, there more room than meets the eye. I'm 6' and have plenty of leg room and even when I have my seat slid back, there's still plenty of leg room in the back seat. It hasn't given me any problems aside from keeping it clean, but I guess that's what I get for buying a black SUV.
