Ford Escape (2010 and older) SUV | Crossover

DESCRIPTION

The Ford Escape is a 4-door, 5-passenger sport-utility, and lead the small SUV class back when it was first introduced in 2001. Although changes have continued to be made to the Escape over the last ten years, its exterior and interior designs are looking dated compared to the competition.

The XLS FWD is equipped with a standard 2.5-liter, I4, 171-horsepower engine that achieves 22-mpg in the city and 28-mpg on the highway. A 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard. The Limited Hybrid 4WD is equipped with a standard 2.5-liter, I4, 153-horsepower, hybrid engine that achieves 29-mpg in the city and 27-mpg on the highway. A variable speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard.

The Ford Escape gets good fuel economy with its standard 4-cylinder engine and it offers a long list of high tech features and options such as the Ford SYNC entertainment system, programmable MyKey and active park assist, a system which allows the Escape to parallel park itself with very little driver involvement.

Strength:

Strong, Peppy Engine Great Gas Mileage Nice Mach 6 Disc-In-Dash CD Player Solid Braking System -- ABS

Weakness:

Automatic Transmission Shifter may be slightly in the way of radio controls (not major) Excessive Brake Dust on front wheels The plastic "board" covering the fuses on the driver's side seems flimsy and doesn't appear to have a tight fit (also not major)

Excellent small SUV for the small family. I have owned this vehicle for nearly a year, and 14,000 miles later not a single trip to the dealer, other than oil/filter changes. Great on gas. Very peppy with its 3.0L DOHC V6. I haven't used the 4X4 yet, but it might come in handy some day. Excellent leg room (I am well over 6 feet tall) Not everyone will opt for leather and a sunroof, but I am sure glad I did. I only wish mine had come with heated seats as the 2003 model does. Wonderful vehicle. Wonderful gas mileage. What more can I say? I would reccomend one to anyone!

This is my first SUV. Previously I had owned a 1998 Chevrolet Astro Van. From what I have heard, a real death trap.

Strength:

Interior quality for money Power everything V6 Interior room

Weakness:

The plastic cladding around the body, hope it doesn't scratch easy.

After looking at most of the small sport utes, we decided on the Ford. No others matched the price and options, as well as the customer service at our Ford dealer. Wife just picked it up last Monday, 12/16/02, and we both love it. The V6 is great, power everything, and a good value. We are replacing a 4 banger Grand Am that I could not wait to get rid of. The other side of the garage has a 98 Dakota Sport 4X4 so off road ability was not in question. We test drove a FreeLander and for my money it just didn't get it done. The Jeep Liberty felt like it was going to tip over when we turned, and why don't those back seats fold?? We ended up at the Ford dealer and purchased a demo model with 1200 miles. Here's to a long, problem free ownership. Cheers

Strength:

Looks, power, sound system, visability, and handling.

Weakness:

Low gas mileage. Wind noise. Loud blower fan.

My 2002 Escape XLT 4X4 has been very reliable. The wind noise is excessive at highway speeds. The gas mileage is low - at 6300 miles I've never broken 15.8 mpg in the city! (I'm not a lead foot. :) My service advisor explained that the brakes need to be broken in (5000 miles) before I would see 18 mpg in the city. (?!)

Strength:

good looks, nice interior, pretty good SUV MPG, nice sound system, good # of power outlets.

Weakness:

front axle issues; o/d shifter in the way of the radio; rear w/s wiper had to be bent to cleanly wipe window; front wheels dirty quickly (should use dust free brakes); difficult to get to air filter.

I am concerned about the reliability of this vehicle. Was in the shop 1st week with split ball joints on both left and right, front axle. At 1 year, ford replaced the front right strut for leakage, after 3 attempts for the dealership to determine the problem, and addressing the issue to the shop manager.

Strength:

-Lots of power -Reasonable fuel consumption for an SUV -Stereo -Looks much better than all the imports -Great visibility

Weakness:

-Getting used to the geat shifter -Doors don't lock automatically

So far I LOVE my Escape. It handles very well, is comfortable and has lots of room for a small SUV. The engine truly puts the sport in Sport Utility that is lacking in most of the competition. Nice to have that power when needed. I haven't heard any wind noises at highway speed. The stalling problems I just read about in this forum surprised me, seems that it was fixed on the 2003s . I now have just over a 1000 kms on it and have not had any problems whatsoever.

Reliability. The engine problem was the last straw.

Love the looks and performance. Unfortunately my engine went out at 19K miles! The dealer took two weeks to install a "remanufactured" engine. Ford cust service reps were no help at all, and would not even provide a rental car.

Strength:

Power, Ride, Awesome 300W stereo, and easy to park.

Weakness:

Hard to put ignition key in, shifter to long and needs bigger gas tank.

I have had my 2001 XLT for 2 years now and have over 45000 miles on it. I have had it in the shop only twice once for a recall and once for a sensor that went out. Over all I am very satisfied with my Escape. I did own a 1998 Ranger that gave me problems from the get go. It seems if you have problems from the start you had several to follow. It took 2 years and many times in the shop before it became a stable vehicle. I get between 19 and 21 MPG with my Escape.

Strength:

Decent gas mileage, roomy interior, smooth ride

Weakness:

Awkward gear shift (sticks out near the radio) and very firm seats

For the past 2 1/2 months, I feel I've been riding in luxury. I am familiar with the bumpy rides that many SUV's have to offer...But the Escape offers a smoother, much quieter ride. The backseat folds down to give extra cargo space, and the back seat comfortably fits 3 people. My Escape's V6, automatic transmission is a pleasure to drive.
