Strength:

Roomy, good power, comfortable, drives well.

Weakness:

That infamous brake-dust on front wheels; brakes squeaked a lot and now need to be replaced; rear ring & Pinion went bad; light bulb out in driver's mirror; cd changer is stingy with returning (ejecting) cd's; power steering grinds hard; alternator; gas mileage stinks at about 13-16 mpg.

It's no minivan. We now have four small children and find that there is some difficulty getting everyone in/out with all the car seats. With both portions of third row seat up, you lose the coveted cargo space. But with three car seats in middle row, there's no way into back seat except through rear lift gate (I know, this problem is somewhat unique to us, but...). Not as functional as a minivan for a family of 6, but does have it's good points too. It's big and (at least feels) safe. Ride's great and has good-enough power (we have the 5.4L V-8). With three seated in middle and one in back, can still leave bigger part of split 3rd row seat down and have room for stroller, groceries, etc. For the size it is not overly noisy even at freeway speeds. As for the problems, we've had a few: Within a month, the black pant chipped off the rear seat temp/audio control console revealing the tan undertones (looks bad). Dealer said they would paint, although we never had them do it. The six disc cd-changer often will not eject cd's. We have to help it by sticking another cd in the slot and coercing the thing to come out. At about 26,000 miles, the alternator went out. We were driving down the road one day and the truck started dying. Lights were flashing in dash board and engine was hesitating, until it completely died (luckily we had made it into a parking lot). We were stranded at the time and so bought a battery, which worked for a day, then died again. Took it to dealer and they couldn't find the problem. Said it was the new battery because supposedly the posts were too short (WHATEVER!). After we convinced them that was baloney, they found it to be an intermittent short in the alternator and replaced it. We've also had the rear ring-n-pinion replaced when we took it in because of a whining noise in the drive train. The car was in the shop 3 days for each of these repairs. Also had a light bulb go out in driver side mirror. Dealer replaced but left out some insulation and caused some kind of burning smell (tape rubbed against light bulb). Took it back and had to have whole mirror replaced. Latest problems are with hard grinding noise in powersteering when you turn wheel all the way. Dealer so far has not diagnosed, but have replaced power steering fluid reservoire and now are saying there is a small leak in the hose. Neither of these parts were in stock and now (after the weekend) we'll have had the thing in the shop for the seventh day (Monday). Ridiculous. Ford has covered (reluctantly) the cost of renting a Ford Focus, but with a family of six we have to go bigger and pay the difference. On top of all that, we have been having problems with the rear brakes making a scraping noise, especially when backing down the driveway and sometimes when driving slowly in parking lot, even without foot on brake pedal (those are times when it's easier to hear, so it probably happens more often than we know). They always feel fine, but make noise and squeak a lot at times. We had the brakes checked just a few months ago (by dealer because of squeaking) and were told they were fine. Now we're told the rear brakes are bad, that the wear indicator is rubbing on rotor and the rotors are going bad. If they resurface, they probably won't be in spec, so will need to be replaced. Dealer asked if we drove with emergency brake on, which we DID NOT. I think there is something wrong with the brakes, like somehow they are sticking and causing undue wear, but have no way to prove or disprove except to take the dealers' and mechanics' word for it. We ran it by another supposedly unbiased mechanic and he said it sounded legitimate. Still, it's not right that they have gone bad in a few months when they were fine not long ago. We're still in the middle of this one, so we'll see what Ford says. Lastly, the tires have gone bad too soon. Admittedly, we left them too long without rotation, but the two tires that were on the front for the first 24K miles are now needing to be replaced. The car now has 34,500 miles and I'm a bit worried about life after the warranty!

Excellent Vehicle overall and very nice 4 wheel drive system. Was tested and didnt get stuck.

Weakness:

Gasielage not great but very good for this size vehicle and that size engine.

WOW! What a excellent vehicle. I have never had a vehicle this nice before. The ride is a smooth as a babys but. It is like ridding in a car. The vehicle is very nicley equiped. IT also has many standard features. There is so much power in the beast and it handels like a dream. I have had no prolbems what so ever with the vehicle. None. Not lying. The people a ththe dealer we brought it from in Annapolis Maryland were the nicest people you will ever meat and very helpfull. I owned a Ford Explorer before this but it was a little small for my uses. I have 3 children and a wife and it is perfect. There is plenty of room for them and even a golden retreiver and is great for long trips. There is tons of cargo space and room espically when the third row is down. Plus it has a lot of power to tow.

Strength:

Size and comfort. You couldn't ask for a more comfortable car to take on a trip. Turning the car around....it will turn on a dime....I love that.

Weakness:

GAS MILEAGE! It eats gas like crazy...12mpg around town.

I have been pretty pleased with my V-8 Eddie Bauer Expedition. I had a problem with the gas tank leaking which cost me a pretty penny to fix. I don't enjoy the 12mpg gas mileage that it gets....but I do enjoy getting into a car and not feeling like my knees are underneath my chin. I also like the fact that people can get in my back seat and sit comfortably. When I first got the car new the motor on the back windshield wiper died...but since it was under warranty that wasn't a problem and haven't had a problem out of it since then. I don't like what ever they use on the steering wheel though....they always look dirty and you can't get it off. I LOVE the digital entry on the door. I lock my keys and purse in there all the time and just punch in my code to get in the car. I also like that the doors automatically lock when you take your foot off of the gas too. The stereo system is pretty good....although I'm not a real stereo person....but it sure would be nice if they would have made it easier to change the time on the durn thing. Seeing as that is something you do have to do twice a year....HELLO! Other than these few things I have pretty much enjoyed it.

Strength:

Perfect size. Tons of features. Third row very handy when needed. Same wheelbase as a short bed PU means very manuverable. Very good value used. Not so good new. Strong responsive 5.4 liter engine. Love the memory seats. Seats fold down and you can carry a sofa back there. Try that in your Volvo SUV or an Acura! Looks good. Cheap repairs.

Weakness:

Tippy feeling, poor handling. Installed better shocks and roll bar which helped some. Mediocre seats. Too narrow and poor padding. Poor seat shape. Most American cars don't support the upper back properly. Shows its age with road noise worse than more modern offerings.

Bought this vehicle used with 50,000 miles. Only had two small problems. An Idle control valve and a starter relay. Both under $200 repars and we had an extended warranty so no big deal. Billy Howell Ford lied to us and told us it was not covered under the warranty but we caught them and the warranty company covered it. They had never even called to check. If you have a third party warranty confirm that the dealer is calling. Great vehicle for my family of 5. We have three in car/booster seats so we need the nice wide rear seat it has. The third row is only used for when friends ride along. This is the perfect sized SUV in my opinion. Had a 2000 Suburban which was nice, but much harder to manuever in tight spots and barely fit in the garage. Sold it for $9,000 more than the Expedition we replaced it for. Same year models. A used Eddie Bauer is the way to go. This Expedition sold for $33,000 just a few years before we got it. Thats a $14,500 hit in just 2 1/2 years! Terrible depreciation initially. Buy a used one with warranty and you're way ahead. I installed a DVD/flip down monitor myself for $275. Awesome vacation vehicle. This is my second Expedition. Had zero problems with the first one but it was an 98 XLT with bricks for seats.

2000 Suburban, 2001 Tahoe, 2001 Izuzu Trooper. Chevy products were nice but the Suburban rattled like crazy and made loud suspension noises. Cost way too much in comparison to the Ford. Trooper was the best quality of any of them. Rock solid and no problems in two years. Wish they still made them. Won't buy a newer 2003+ Expedition as I've seen way too many problems on this site with them. Looks like the quality at Ford is no longer JOB #1.

Strength:

Power folding 3rd seat, roomy storage bin under console arm rest.

Weakness:

Overall very poor quality, and the worst thing is that the dealors and the Ford company itself are very difficult to deal with, and provide very poor support. Bad A/C design, vibration at highway speeds, abnormal tire wear, excessive brake rotor wear, excessive brake dust, they took too much ground clearance away for enjoyable Off Road usage, engine noise and rough idle, terrible ergonomics for long trip comfort, some critical dash board lamps are way too low and hidden by the steering wheel, cheap leather starts peeling at 7,000 miles, abnormal tire wear, faulty rear wiper, faulty rear view mirror, cheap/flimsy buttons on dashboard and overhead console, quirky sunroof operation and gear selector, CD player make whining noise, many other minor issues.

FORD should be ashamed of the poor quaility of the new Expedition. My vehicle came loaded with known problems. This is my 9th Ford in a row and after the way I have been treated the past couple of purchases, THIS IS MY LAST FORD EVER!! I am a patient man but, I expected a couple of minor problems the first few months, but combine the numerous problems, the trips back to the shop to fix problems, combined with the dealors and Ford's lack of support and willingness to stand behind thier product, my patience is all used up. There are so many problems with the quality and design of this vehicle it is a joke. Here are some of the problems that I have had: A/C stops working on long road trips after about 2 hours, bad vibration in steering wheel at highway speeds, two dealers have tried o fix it 4 times, now say they can't fix it and I have to take it up with Ford!, in addition to the vibration the the front tires are feathering, had to have the front tires replaced after 3,000 miles, and the problem still exists, they tried aligining the front end twice and the problem still exists, the dealer even had the nerve to make me pay $10 dollars to rotate the tires, they say if they cant fix it before 12k miles that I am stuck with the problem; front Brake rotors have deep grooves in them at 9,000 of light duty driving, the dealer says it's a known problem but they won't do anything about it, excessive brake dust is ugly, Ford took away too much ground clearance in the new models for decent off road use, I have driven mine many times on the beaches and it bottoms out in the sand much more than the 1999 model I had, therefore you have to drive a lot slower which is no fun; the leather on the front seats started peeling at 8,00 miles very cheap grade leather (I question if it really is leather, sure doesnt smell like it; the CD player makes a whining noise; the rear tailgate wiper intermittantly doesnt go all the way back down; I had a whining noise from the middle drive train around 45 mph, the right rear view mirror does not have the full range of movement the left does but the dealer wont admit it's a problem; the gear shift selector is quirky, you can drive it with the selector not fully engaged in drive; the design on the instrument panel is terrible, several of the important indicator lights are so low on the panel they are hidden by the steering wheel, ie, high beam indicator, low tire pressue, etc; compared to the ergonomics of the 1999 Expedition I had, the ergonomics of the 2004 is terrible, the drivers area is much more cramped, it's hard to get comfortable on long trips, the seats are very uncomfortable on long trips, the seats sit too high in the cabin and I have much less leg room than 1999 model; the enigne made a chirping noise after only 1000 miles, they replaced the serpentine belt, at 10,000 miles the noise is back; the engine intermittantly idles rough, the dealer said again that this is normal; the carpet has to be the most low grade material ever, very cheap; the arm rests on either side of the front seats are at an uncomfortable hieght, the buttons on the dashboard and overhead console couldn't be any cheaper and flimsy, they are so flimsy it's hard to tell if the button has been engaged, and the indicator lamp is so small and dim you have trouble seeing it; closing the sunroof glass is tricky, you have to time the button release just right to get it to seal properly.

My wife and I love this vehicle. Without a doubt the best vehicle either of us has ever owned. Great styling, roomy interior, great flexibility. Even the "base model" XLT is well equipped. A real surprise - before buying the Expedition I was skeptical - I am a convert - an awesome vehicle.

Look and room. Looks good parked in front yard.

Weakness:

Poor ride. Ford dose not stand by there product and deny problems exist. It is a 40k lawn ornament. Would not sugest this headach on my worse enemy. Ford will not replace, buy back, or fix. They do not stand by there product, why buy it?

Shop around. Mine is a lemon it shakes as soon as we got upto 72mph to come home. We took it back to dealer next day to get fixed as dealer closed. It has been in 4 times over 30 days for the shaking and now Ford states the problem does not exist. Gas gage sticks and needs to be replaced for the 2nd time. Engine grindes when when it is started. Vechile acelerated by it's self while foot was still on brake after coming to a stop, almost wreaked. We can't drive the vehicle because we do not fell safe with our kids in the vehicle Bought in June and have not been able to drive it. I sugest buying from a company that cares about the customer and not just the money and hidding the problem. I have had 20 people and 1 mechanic state that the problem is still there and Ford still does not want to admit that it is flawed.

Solid truck, good looks, very reliable. I would recommend it to anyone plus I'm looking to upgrade to a newer model Expedition right now.

Weakness:

Gas mileage not the best but it is expected due to the size and power of the truck. Mirror interior coating. Biggest problem is the dealership failure to diagnose any problem. Their stance is if the problem doesn't show up while the truck is in their shop then the problem doesn't exhist.

The best truck I've ever owned. 5.4 V8 2 wheel drive. Virtually problem free.Comfortable ride, well appointed. Replaced a coil, starter and a rear pinion seal in 116K+ miles. However dealership service department is less than competent. On starter problem (dead spot on armeture), dealer had the truck 3 times for 4 days each and then said that they couldn't get the starter to fail therefore there was no problem.I took it to my regular mechanic who had the problem diagnosed in 20 minutes and replaced the starter in 2 hours which he purchased from the selling dealer. Dealer had the truck in for service five times but failed to notice the leaking pinion seal(oil dripping at a steady pace) and failed to advise. Signal mirror interior reflective coating disolved exposing interior workings of the mirror mechanism 200 miles after the warranty ran out. Dealer said "too bad-so sad!" I'll never will go back there for anything!

Interior roomy and very well designed. Vehicle pleasant to drive. Looks great.

Weakness:

Vechile lacks quality big time, and Ford Motor Corp's staff will fight to avoid paying for expensive repairs that are covered supposedly by warranty.

With our family growing, we sold our Explorer (which ran OK) and bought a new ED. It didn't take long to realize the vehicle came with various defects (tires and tinted window). A few months after, various issues appeared (mostly electrical), so much so that we got tired, sold it and bought a Nissan Armada. Hugely disapointed at thte quality of this vehicle, and the refusal of Ford Motor Co to stand behind their warranty. Will never buy a Ford ever.
