Fuel Mileage We have the Eddie Bauer 4x4 with the 5.4 Triton motor. It's been very reliable and zero problems to date with 52.5k miles. My only concern was the terrible fuel mileage at an average of 13 MPG. I must recommend a helpful hint.....Replace the stock Air intake box with an aftermarket free flowing air intake setup. This allows for more cooler, denser air to flow freely into your manifold, thereby making up to 15 rear wheel horsepower. This in turn prevents the truck from using as much energy to move this massive piece of machinery, and saving you money when it's time to fill up. I have seen as much as a 4 MPG difference!! Good ride. Drives nice.
Weakness:
Transmission. Someone needs to check out this transmission. There is some problem when it is loaded and shifting between 4th and 3rd gear. If you carry an average load and operate in hilly terrain, the transmission will not last. Overdrive is the problem. Mechanics say to run it in 3rd gear. Thats OK if you like 3,500 rpm and 8 miles per gallon. Bad experience with transmission. I failed to get an extended warranty. Transmission rebuilt at 49,000 miles. Cost $2,000. Repairman said factory defect in shifting. Transmission out again at 56,000 miles. Cost $2,500 for Ford remanufactured transmission. Repairman suggested I trade soon. Transmission has broken down at 30 000 km. We've had this vehicle for about a year and a half, and have found it comfortable and reliable - up to now.have taken a few long distance trips and found the seats and driver position good for this.Have done a little off=road and found it competent. Sufficent power. We plan on towing a small camping trailer under 5,000 lbs.
Weakness:
Gas milage. While mine is not broke-in yet, I don't feel I'll get more than 18 Hwy. Whats with this 5W 20W oil, it's hard to find. I wish the dealer would have already taken care of the Firestone tires. Why burden the customer? This is our family's first SUV. Overall, very pleased with the product. Our's is a 2 wheel drive with a 4.6 L engine and a 3.55 ratio diff. Has plenty of room. The rear air is a nice feature for passengers. Similar Products Used: None. Its a big truck disguised as SUV. Ride is good, but very noisy even at moderate speeds
Weakness:
Terrible engine problems. Engine is locked up @ 56k mi. Dealer said oil had turned to sludge, which I have no explanation for, as I changed oil approximately every 6 months. Vehicle has sat, except for minor around block trips in driveway for past 2 months. First time driven more than 4 miles in that time period, engine locks up, has to have entire new engine. Ford won't take any responsibility, says no one else has had the same problem. Would like to hear from anyone w/ same or similar problem, please Have had major problems w/ tires overall, & especially front tires, on the 3rd set @ only 56k mi. Terrible gas mileage, & have had major engine problems. Similar Products Used: Had 3 Nissan SUV's before, Nissan is vastly superior vehicle in every way. I wouldn't buy or drive another Ford at any price! |

Steering is awesome; this truck is very agile for it's size. The shape of this truck is very unique & manly. Things are very easy to locate UNDER hood.
Weakness:
Gas mileage is the worst. I guess that's to be expected when you purchase a truck of this size. I can get the gas for $1.45 a gallon where I live, but it's still about $30.00 a week. The Ford Expedition is a very nice truck. It handles like a smaller tuck, but you get the room/comfort of what you purchased ( a house on wheels ). Dashboard is definitely user friendly & the bucket seats make long rides that much more comfortable. Similar Products Used: compared to Chevy Tahoe & GMC Yukon ................. they can NOT compare. This is the best (non-luxury) truck in it's class. Hands down |

This SUV hauls everything, I have used it to put: A full size couch, refridgerator(on its side), Washer and dryer, you name it, All in the inside of the vehicle. Handles pretty well for something this size. Good turn radius. As bad a gas mileage may be, mine is a consistent 13 MPG, regardless of how I drive it. I have the 5.4 liter..
Weakness:
Terrible on Brakes(fronts), First set made it 20K, Since then, I have had 4 sets and the car has 43K on it. I bought the best Raybestos with lifetime warranty(at least they are free. I got used to changing my break once a month or so.... takes 15 minutes now. Needs more power... total dog on the highway, Loud at any speed. Had it in th shop 8 times in the first year due to a mysterious electrical problem in which alll electrical stuff from the dash back would not work after the vehichle sat for more than 8 hours, then woudl kick back on 10 minutes into the drive.$5000 dollars worth of electrical replacement... still not fixed completely. Overall, Minus the problems I had, nothing was ever enough to make me hate this truck. My lease is about to end, and if the darn residuals and rates weren't so bad, I would have leased another one. This is a great vehcle IF you haul lots of people or lots of crap. I can drive it for 14 hours straight without stopping due to the space. You can just stretch right in the car,LOL. This is not a suv for the timid, as you take up lots of space, and parking in a garage us a no no..... I had the 17" wheel upgrade which made my height almost 6'8", most parking garages are out. and fitting into a regular residential garage is snug. If you can get one cheap, go for it, but I don't think the vehicle warrants a 40K tag for what it isn't. Similar Products Used: Tahoe, Blazer, Jeep Grand cherokee, Explorer(had alot of SUV's) |

Safety! Only Suv to earn a DOUBLE five star government front crash rating. Good power with 5.4V8. It's really quick(although I wish it had more...ie 351)throughout acceleration. Seats up to nine.
Weakness:
None noted after 3+ years of driving. We bought out expy new in 1999. It was in the shop twice during the three years we had it. The pump for the rear wiper fluid wasn't working and the cruise would not engage the day we drove it off the lot. The guys at Ford fixed the problem and were very concerned of my customer satisfaction. The other problem I had was with steering. It kept pulling to the left-especially when I hit my brakes. Ford never totally corrected the problem to the point that I could release the wheel and she would track straight. We lived with it. With the 5.4 V8 we averaged 13.2mpg in the city and 16.3mpg on the hwy. It didn't matter how we drove it or what we towed, the averages were the same. I did notice a noise begining to surface after 32,000 miles of driving. In a previous review someone mentioned the engine knocking during cold weather. Last winter I noticed my engine making a scrubbing sound upon initial start-up on cold mornings. It wasn't a knock, just a scrub. It would stop after about 5min of operation and never occur again until the next morning. I never had it checked out because I didn't notice any change in performance. At any rate, it drove well this summer(2001) without any strange sounds. We have taken some LONG trips driving 18hrs at a time on numerous occasions from Kansas to Georgia and NEVER had a problem! This vehicle is great for traveling! I have three daughters and a beautiful wife and have never felt more safe on the road. We usually keep the third seat in and fold down the second seats to lay a matress on the floor so the kids can sleep during the night while I drive. It's fun to drive! I loved driving it so much that we just traded in on a new 2001 XLT 4x4 loaded w/Sports Appearance Group and No Boundries Group coupled with a moonroof. I absolutly love this machine!! I hope it performs as well as our previous model. For all you Expy bashers: Ford has problems just like any other car maker. Just read some chevy/GMC/Toyota...etc reviews and you'll see the same complaints as with ford. All car manufacturers have lemons evenly. You never know when one will pop up. I think once the company has to invest "X" amount of dollars in repairs over a given amount of time, then the vehicle should be rendered a lemon and the customer given a new one. The Expedition is a great vehicle that I would recommend for anyone. The new Expy's(2001,2002)are the ONLY SUV's to earn a DOUBLE five star government front crash rating. To me, that's worth a problem here and there. Similar Products Used: None |

Weakness:
Ford Customer Service. The Denver Regional representative doesn't give a rat's ass about the problems I've had with this thing My truck has been a Catch 22 from the word go. I love driving my EXPY, it has good power (5.4 Triton) and handles great, on and off road. BUT... and a very BIG BUT here... I've had to have the engine replaced twice in the last year and half. I've had 3 problems with the drivers seat, passenger seat belt problems, leaky rear window (6 times in the shop for that), engine ignition coils frying, cruise control and Air Conditioning problems and rear suspension trouble. In all, Ford had about 15 to 20-thousand dollars in warranty repairs into this thing Similar Products Used: None |
