Strength:

It's still a good looking SUV after 6 years. The exhaust system has been maintenance free which is great for a vehicle with 115K miles on it.

Weakness:

Front end problems like u-joints and 4x4 parts (old style).

Things that I expected I'd have to replace have held up, like the exhaust system and the paint. Things that I thought I wouldn't have to replace have worn out, like the clutch plate and the u-joints. But all in all this has been a very reliable vehicle and I've enjoyed owning it - especially now that it's paid for. I don't think I'd buy another unless it's solar powered.

Strength:

I love the ride! The winter has been especially bad so far and this truck gets through anything. This is my 1st 4 wheel drive truck and I love it so far. It is very roomy, and comfortable. It feels much safer than a car. Also LOVE the stereo!!

Weakness:

Firestone tires, plan to change them soon

I would definitely reccomend this truck to anyone. It is a solid + durable truck and so far very dependable. I will never go back to a car after owning one.

Strength:

Give me time, I'll think of something.

Weakness:

Engine, Front end, brakes.

I had minor cosmetic problems with this vehicle from day one. Every time I returned it to the Dealer, same story. Couldn't find anything or "That rattling noise is normal for this vehicle" At 40,000 miles, the timing belt broke seizing the engine as a catastrophic failure. Ford would do absolutely nothing. They advised they had no after market engines available and suggested I look in a junk yard.

Strength:

Its a great vehicle. Going up the Grapevine on highway 5, I have never been passed. It has a lot of power and the V6 with 5 speed auto trans; is great.

Weakness:

Poor gas mileage.

It rolled over to 38,711 miles on 12/21/00 and Firestone replaced their brand of 255/70/16 tires with new Bridgestones at no charge to me. I find no handling problems on even very curvy back roads and I keep 35+ pounds of air at all times. I am also a senior citizen. My ears may not be the best in the world, but with the CD changer and JBL stereo system, I am quite impressed with the sound system.

Strength:

Cheap price

Weakness:

Poor motor

I liked the looks of the vehicle, perceived flexibility and functionality. I was fooled. The Explorer was the biggest the piece of junk that I have ever owned. I had 55,000 miles on it, had regular oil changes, maintenance etc...
The engine started burning oil and I was told by the dealer that it required a new engine.

Strength:

Ford Explorer has dominated the SUV market for the past couple of years now, Why? Because Ford offers a very low base price which makes this vehicle preety much affordable to a lot of families. Very reliable (had this car for two years and a 1/2 and have experienced no problem with it whatsoever), Great Styling (Classic Ford Truck Styling), Good acceleration, Very Roomy interior, Aftermarket accessories readily available.

Weakness:

Bumpy ride(solid truck though), Wilderness Tires

I would definitely recommend this vehicle to anybody looking for an affordable SUV. These vehicles start at a very low base price and most families can usually afford it. Very good track history, very very reliable vehicle, very versatile, very roomy, and quite comfortable. Explorers have been on top of the SUV market and have been the best selling SUV in the United States for a couple of years now. Ford definitely must be doing something right to dominate this highly crowded SUV market. Definitely test drive an Explorer and you will be glad you did.

Model Reviewed: Eddie Bauer 4dr 4x4

Strength:

The body style is phat, no doubt. The leather is comfy and the JBL factory stereo (for Eddie Bauer edition) is pretty good for a factory system. It can go pretty much anywhere little Blazers and sh*t can go, Grand Cherokees with the V6, and best of all the back seats fold all the way down, and at age 16, yes that does matter.

Weakness:

The engine, at 160 horsepower, is weak as fu*k. Straight up. The clearance is the lowest of all my friends SUVs, probably cuz mine has running boards (it is and Eddie Bauer)...however, I have found a number of modifications to turn it into a street-bred vehicle without completely replacing the engine, because honestly off-roading doesn't matter to me anymore.

I would reccomend this car to anyone, although it is a bit too slow. Just get the mods I have found (email me if you want more info) and it should be all good.

Strength:

Lots of cargo room. I can put my daughter's car seat in the seat behind me, and fold down the right side for more cargo. I successfully loaded groceries, bulk diaper boxes, large baby stroller/items, and still had room. My wife and I love this vehicle. I want to use the 4x4 in an actual situation (rain/snow) I've tested it on dirt, uphill grass fields, nothing extensive, but it climbs nicely in 4WD LOW. Cruises nice and smooth at 80 MPH.

Weakness:

Bumpy ride on some of the roads out here, but hey, it's a truck.

I would recommend this vehicle to my family and friends. My father in law already owns a 1991 XLT 4x4, but has many problems due to incompetent Mechanic. Don't go to P&S Transmissions in Ramona, CA.

JBL sound system deafining. Leathers great. Handles good. V-8 a workhorse, if you step on it, you better hold on. I love going 4 whellin'.

Weakness:

??? No problems yet (70K), sometimes it'll shift to early slowing acceleration, but by the time you think, "man, it shifted too early," you'll be going 80. Every body always says how loud it is

Definetly recommended, great quility. My V8 has a single flowmaster, and dear lord this truck is LOUD!!! Great power. Excelent acceleration, I can out accelerate most cars and all other SUV's will be smoked. I love this truck. BEST TRUCK EVER.
