Strength:

Solid 4x4 in snow, spacious, price (with respect to others in its class), low maintenance, apperance.

Weakness:

Power.

I really love my 96 Explorer and coming from a mid-size car I find it quite spacious. It does burn more gas, but my friend's Pathfinder burns way more (he also had an Explorer previous to the Pathfinder and finds his gas bill has gone way up). My smaller car was a standard and accelerated quickly - this vehicle does not (6 - cylinder)but it is heavier. I guess the V-8 would be better for acceleration. I am just happy I can pack up all my camping gear, cooler of beer (or two), mountain bikes, and guitar and still have room for the dog in the back seat. It seemed to be the best bang for the dollar and I have not had any trouble with it to date. A frined of mine is also testing a device which can apparently reduce gas consumption so I might give this thing a try to see how much power it als oelliminates.

Bottom line - I find it to be an excellent buy but I would not recommend the 6 for towing.

Similar Products Used:

Jimmy - horrible feel on the highway
Pathfinder - too small & car-like
Forester - Too small and pricey.
CRV - Nice, but too small for the price (not the same class).
RAV - Junk by comparison (not really the same class).
4-Runner - No guts in the base model and too pricey.

Strength:

VERY reliable - not a single problem
High power and torque
Relatively quick compared to most SUVs
Commanding driving position
All wheel drive
Cheaper than many other inferior SUVs

Weakness:

Fuel Economy
Can be costly with lots of options

Sticker = Approximately $33,000

I got mine for under $30,000...

I would definitely recommend this vehicle. Aside from fuel economy concerns, it has exceeded my expectations in every way. Nothing its size or smaller can come close in towing capacity (5,700lbs). It can get to 60mph in just over 8 seconds. All wheel drive is always engaged on the v8 model, so it is idiot proof in the snow. I have not had a single mechanical or electrical problem and all of the fittings are perfect. I am eagerly awaiting the next generation Explorer. Ford is by far the most reliable domestic make of car/truck and competes with the best from around the world.

COMFORTABLE, GOOD TOWING CAPABILITIES, 4X4, EASY TO MANUVER.

Weakness:

DOOR HANDLE BROKE OFF, FUEL PUMP SOMETIMES STAYS ON, ONLY
240 MILES PER FILL-UP, AC HAD TO BE REPLACED.

PURCHASED WITH 34,000 MILES FOR $12,000. REPLACE THE SHOCKS, REPLACE THE SHOCKS, REPLACE THE ******* SHOCKS! AT
FIRST THE RIDE WAS VERY BOUNCY WITH SOME SEVERE/SCARY BODY LEAN. I SPENT $320.00 ON SOME EDELBROCK IAS PERFORMER GAS SHOCKS AND, WOW! WHAT A DIFFERENCE $320 MAKES, WORTH EVERY PENNY. I NOW HAVE 80,000 MILES AND OTHER THAN THE FUEL-PUMP STAYING ON AND REPLACING THE AC, AND THERMOSTAT, I HAVE NOT HAD ANY OTHER PROBLEMS. I PLAN TO KEEP THE EXPLORER FOR ANOTHER 3-4 YEARS AND I WOULD DEFINITELY BUY ANOTHER. I LIKE THE 1997+ SOHC V6, 5 SPEED AUTO, WITH 4X4.

It can do anything. I have taken it off roading and it works great.

Weakness:

It is rear wheel drive, and doesn't handle as well in slick icy roads. There aren't any lift kits for this year Explorer.

I paid 13k for mine and it was a 95. I think it was a little too much, but it only had 40000 miles on it. I love it. I am very active in the outdoors and it can help my do anything. I have a bike rack on it and take it to all my rides.

Gas Milage, Breaking Distance

Paid 24K for everything except for leather and sun-roof. Comfort and interior space is excelent. Handles very well, except the suspenssion is a bit rough (could be because it's new). The very first weakness that I've noticed is the gas milage - very poor, even if you compare it to other SUVs. Also, shorter breaking distance is wanted. Aside from that, it's a great automobile.

Strength:

Everything....We opted for the SOHC V6 with 210 hp and its pretty quick for an SUV. The interior is nice, and the 6 disk CD changer in the console. The 4 wheel drive system is awesome, and I need it because it snows quite a bit here. You can shift on the fly but since it is always in "auto" you never really need to put it in 4WD. Upgraded stereo is great too!

Weakness:

I think there might be a leak in the fuel system somewhere! Boy it uses gas! But if you can afford it this is a great truck.

Paid about 30K for this Explorer and it is well worth it. Its very reliable (the only problem we have had with it was the door lock on the driver side broke, but the warranty covered it). Its powerful, quick, handles well for an SUV, and its a lifesaver in the snow...sometimes you actually become too confident in this truck becuase it does so well in slick conditions.

Weakness:

DOES NOT RIDE REALLY WELL BUMPY ROADS OR UNEVAN ROAD SERVICES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS
ENGINE MAKES RATTELING NOISES WHEN FIRST STARTED
LIKES TO USE ALOT OF GAS. (CAN BE EXPECTED FOR A SUV)

LEASED TRUCK THROUGH FORD FOR 2 YEARS.TRUCK IS DUE BACK VERY SOON. I'M TOLD THE RESTYLED 2001 EXPLORER SPORT DUE OUT ANYTIME HAS SOME SUSPENSION IMPROVEMENTS.I'M IMPRESSED WITH OVERALL QUALITY. THE 4 DOOR EXPLORER RIDES A LITTLE BETTER DUE TO IT'S LONGER WHEELBASE. WILL GIVE THE 2001 SPORT A TRY. IF I LIKE IT AND CAN GET A DECENT LEASE DEAL I MAY GET THE 2001 SPORT OR A 2000 FOUR DOOR.

Lasts Forever,
great engine, The V-6 4.0 Gives the power you need when you need it.
Great car lasted 200,000 miles (would have lasted another 200.000) If some idiot didn't decited to rear end me into another car and total it for me. No major problems just basic matinance. 4x4 worked great I am 17 and love going off road went mudding any time i had the chance never failed me make sure to get the manual shift 4x4 my friend's electric shift keeps having problems. Good gas mileage about 24 hiway 18-20 city. Handled great

Weakness:

Speed 75 mph to 2700 rpm
Only Rear antilock on the 91's
Door handles suck their plastic
A/C Fan dosen't blow hard enough
Shocks were replaced when i got the car with (procomp 5000)
a/c compressor sucks if you dont replace when it starts to go bad you get whats called black death then your whole a/c system needs to be replaced
4x4 catches when turned all the way(it's a ford thing with the C/V joints
Paint on this year sucks (it oxcidises) mine was repainted
Most of these problems are fixed on the newer 1995 and up models my dad has one although i hate his electronic shift 4x4 and the control trac 4x4.

This was my first car. This car lasts forever never had any real trouble in 200,000 thousand miles. It just needs basic maintance. It was a great car even worked great off road. factory shocks arn't the best also replaced the stabilizer but that was for off road use. 40 mph car crash and i had no injuries my baby did tough (My Car). Also put in a great sound system the only rattles were from the gate can't figure it out. This car was great i will defiantly buy another one,(thats what im looking for right now). It lasts forever because it was BUILT FORD TOUGH......
