Strength:

Power, Size, looks. Never broke down since i bought it with 22,000 now it's at 70,000 What an animal!!! 128 miles an hour before the speed limiter kicks in (on a track) Blazers shut off at 100

Weakness:

I'm a chevy man. I almost bought a blazer, I was talked into this and now i'm a closet Ford man. The truck could get better gas milage. Why does my V-8 Camaro get 24 mpg while my V-6 Explorer gets 16 mpg? I don't like the passsing gear and the oil filter is in the worst possible place.

I love my Explorer. The factory shocks, air cleaner and mass air flow were upgraded by myself to give it a little more push. (I'm running at about 150 hp /4000 rpm. The shocks i used are Rancho RS9000. I don't care what anyone say's, i Love em'! The interior could have been thought out a bit more. I don't really like the break between the console and dash. It's a nice truck with a lot of power for a 4.0 SOHC. It WILL pull a 3/4 ton Dodge with 33" tires out of 80' of Mud and water with no problem. I only wish more aftermarket parts were available for the engine. Supercharger anyone???

Very roomy and comfortable.
Nice design and styling
Factory audio cd system is amazing.
Air conditioning is ice cold.
Handles great during the winter.

Weakness:

Gas Mileage is poor.
4x4 very expensive to maintain
Replacement drivers side mirror very expensive to replace

This suv is very nice but expensive to maintain. Handles and drives very well. Large interior compared to a Chev Blazer or GMC Jimmy. Great for moving and transporting items. This suv is wonderful. Make sure you have deep pockets before purchasing one.

In 1990, it had class vs. full-size Bronco, Blazer. Great room. Comfortable cruising. Don't remember it delivered with Firestone tires.

Weakness:

Dismal engine and suspension performance before modification

Purchased in August 1990 from a Koons Va. Ford. Presently has more than 150k on the odometer. No problems

In 1996 we considered trading it for a V8 (However, we would have been losing 12k on the sale, for a 50 horsepower gain). We opted, instead, to keep the vehicle.

We saved some money money and installed after-market parts: KN filter, Hypertech chip, Edelbrock cat-back, Accel plug wires, Splitfire plugs, Synthetic Castrol fluids. The vehicle performs on par with an (unmodified) V8 Explorer. Bilstein shocks transform the suspension.

Durability.

Weakness:

Front brakes if driven with load, transmission. As a family vehicle, the first series Explorer could use a little more room

255,000 miles and counting. I worked out of this vehicle for 8 years. I drive off-road some everyday. I have driven it in all types of weather conditions. I have never had stability or handling problems with the vehicle, on the contrary, the ABS brakes have saved my skin a number of times. Major problems have been transmission and front brakes. I have replaced the transmission twice. Do not use Ford's brake pads. I drove mine with about 500 pounds in the back all the time so these problems were largely my fault. I would buy a new Explorer if I needed this type of vehicle in the future. I have retired my Explorer and its activities are limited to back-up transportation, canoeing, hunting and fishing trips. A great vehicle.

Strength:

-Powerful 205hp 4.0Litre V6 DOHC
-Good Stock Stereo
-Excellent Transmission
-Plenty of room
-Get's through snow and sand easily even in 2-wheel drive

Weakness:

-Rough Ride
-Noisy Engine Idle (recall sais it is camshaft)
-The electronic locks went beserk one time kept going up and down only one time though

This vehicle has gotten a bad reputation for being to easy to roll. However whenever I have taken it on the road (although it leans like any normal car should) it feels like it is holding on to the road very well. The stock stereo system is great, not as good as aftermarket but who cares it provides plenty of sound. The engine provides enough power to move it along up hills (at lower rpm's than a cherokee) and accelerate through stop lights. The body is well built as I found out when I backed into a Toyota Corolla, the little car had a large dent in it's trunk (from my taillight which wasn't damaged) and a large scratch on it's bumper where my bumper had rolled on top of it. My Explorer suffered a minor scrath on the plastic step plate on the bumper. I can't even feel it shift gears you can only tell by listening to the engine or watching the tachometer drop in RPM's. We have never even had a crack in the windshield! Buy this vehicle if you love to have offroad availabilty and power. Don't buy it if you want to street race or tow 15,000lbs.

Strength:

-One hell of a V-8
-Excellent towing
-Roomy
-Room for seven
-Handling and manuvering
-Audiophile System ( Sterio )
-Safer than the average suv. Regardless of rollovers stories, explorer is still better in rollover safety ( occupant condition after a rollover ) than MOST other suvs...Compare them to anything else. You'll find it's true. It's only surpassed by Mercedes and BMW for suv rolling safety. And people say explorers are unsafe??? What do expect when an suv rolls at speeds of 65mph or faster?

Weakness:

-No Xenon headlamps
-Wish it had another sub woofer for better sound at higher volumes-the sub peaks at while I'm listening to the music at high volumes
-It's a V-8. Gulp Gulp.
-Roll over curtain airbag- An option not available yet. Not till october or November.

I am very impressed with my explorer!

This is my second one. My first one ( a 94 XLT ) was the ginnie pig- I found out a lot about explorers that people don't know through research and usage on/of my ginnie pig. Owner stats, accident stats, my own momentum experiences- using the momentum to your advantage on sliding, fatality stats, upgrades...I found out a lot on my ginnie pig.

My new Ex is probably one of the best handling suvs I've driven. Suspension is all independent, so cornering and quick manuvering over potholes or deer is easy not bumpy or rolly-the back end doesn't bounce like it does on most other suvs and you don't topple as much. Nothing like the older ones. Result??? A lot better control. It doesn't ride ride like a car, but the bumps are evened out out so it doesn't ride as rough as a truck, like a pickup truck does. It's comfy driving on the highways.

3rd seat will come in handy. If it's there, I'll use it. The sterio is excellent. It pulls my rather LARGE boat ( hint- trailer has three axles ), me and four other people and a bunch of luggage with...Get this Power to spare! Not bad for a mid size suv. 2002 Explorers have really come a long way from the 2001 models if you ask me.

If you tow, I highly recommend the V-8. Excellent puller.

-Chevy TrailBlazer- Looks Like a first generation Jeep Grand Laredo with a bow tie ( chevy grille ), Too much hard plastic, Skeptical of the new inline engine- how long will it last? Regular blazers ( 1991-2001 ) have poor reliability ratings. TB Towing is poor compared to V-8 explorers towing.

Strength:

1) Strong- I got into a major accident not to long ago and the car I hit was totalled, but my explorer only had a broken headlight and 1 side of the bumper pushed in. Very impressive.
2) Reliability- The car will start anywhere at any temperature.
3) Roominess
4) Price and nice aggressive look

Weakness:

1) Had to have the ball joints replaced at 52000miles
2) Gas- this is a gas guzzler!
3) It drives kind of rough, but this is a truck.
4) Firestone tires
5) Sound system sucks though
6) You have to be very skilled to drive this truck. It handles much differently than other SUVs

I love my Explorer! I have a 97 XLT and have experienced no problems with it so far. This is my second Explorer. Previously, I owned the older 93 model which lasted a few years. I was surprised that the 93 gave me no problems even at 120000 miles!

Chevy Blazer- This truck crumbles up like paper (seen someone killed). Isuzu Rodeo- Drives sluggish for my taste. I am definately an Explorer girl. I will continue buying them. If I do decide to go to a car (which is unlikely), I may consider a Maxima. I think my boyfriend likes for me to be sick from work so that he can drive my car...

Strength:

Engine, body integrity, roominess

Weakness:

Ride quality, front end radius bushings, paint clear coat peeling

Bought it new in 90 and wife drove it for 92k with no major problems except front end radius bushings brake pads replacements, and other minor wear items. Gave it to daughter who severely abused it for another 100K miles before she gave it back to me with a shot auto transmission and many small unmaintained items to fix. Started to junk it but body was in such good shape, I decided to rebuild and keep it for another 100K or so. Engine has 192K miles on it an still appears to be in good shape dispite oil pressure lower than I remember it used to be. A/C has been rebuilt twice now and converted to R134A.

Strength:

Strong, reliable engine. Lots of leg and head room. Great fold down rear seats for added storage/cartage

Weakness:

Broken middle arm rest will cost me almost $525 to replace from the ford dealership. 4x4 is a little tricky disengaging and hard to tell if totally disengaged.

The truck is an excellent value for the product you receive. I have had a problem with the "On the fly" 4x4 system, but other than that, I don't really regret a thing. This is a rugged, full feature toy with the ability to tackle most on and off road issues with little difficulty.
