Strength:

Turning Radius, interior room, engine power.

Weakness:

I won't even say gas mileage as it is a problem with all SUV's.

We purchased this vehicle Pre-owned for my wife as we have a child on the way and the coupe (2001 Grand Prix GT) wasn't gonna cut it. We enjoy the vehicle very much. Haven't had any landmark problems with it. The passenger side window switch sticks on occasion. Haven't taken it in for that yet but it seems like an easy fix. The only gripe I think I would have would be gas mileage. But then again, it is an SUV. What did I expect? heh Perhaps a larger tank would shut me up as we do drive it a bit and it becomes annoying to have to fuel so regularly. Highway, I get about 380 miles on a tank. But in town is a whole different story. Other than that, no issues. I love the new motor and am happy they made the changes they did from the old 95-2001 Blazer style. Because those WERE terrible.

Weakness:

Everything has to be special ordered for this Envoy.

Caution to anyone wanting to purchase an ENVOY!!! Don't.. Nothing but problems. Do you of you know that to replace a low beam headlight it will cost at least $600??? Well that is what I was just told and GMC won't help. I guess they have a balast in them that was designed to never go out, well mine did and I can't see any reason for any headlight to cost $600. Anyone else had that problem? If so please contact me. I am not done with this issue and if anyone knows the CEO name please send it to me. No where does it state that when you purchase the Envoy that a headlight will cost at least $600. Un heard of as far as I can see it. Customer Service doesn't really seam to care I talked with them many times and then when I ask for someone over him, he says there is no one. He told me it was his decision whether they replaced it and he made that decision not to. So please beware and stay away from the GMC line. This is my third GMC product and the last. All three has had major problems. Please contact me if you have any information.

unreliable, no support from dealer or manufacturer. Too many problems for a new or used vehicle.

Continued problems. We now have flooding on the front floor. We have had 13 problems in a 12,000 mile period. GM did not care other than legally. Dealer told us to go elsewhere. Four problems we have had more than once. Two have since been modified or corrected by recalls. Our long list includes transmission,engine,A/C,water leaks, blower noise, gas overflows, light problems and more. Problems occured in the 5,000 to 17,000 mile range. I fought GM and followed thier recommended procedures for customer satisfaction. Thier procedures protect them. They really don't care about the consumer other than legally.

Strength:

Comfortable and powerful

Weakness:

Transmission went out at 59,000, too many other repairs early on, too many recalls that were safety related, gas hog

Transmission went out at 59,000, fan clutch problems 1 month after purchasing the car and had to be replaced shortly after warranty expired, airconditioning stopped working and had to be repaired, mirrors would not hold program and mirror had to eventually be replaced, body mounts had to be greased and tightened due to an annoying squeek, paint is chipping off buttons on the CD player, Door panel had to be repaired several times before having to replace it with a new one. Reading other consumer reviews...looks like GMC has a huge problem. Don't even bother going to the CEO they will treat you just as poorly as customer service. They don't even care if it is a safety issue...they told us business is business. Unfortunately, the consumer is the one who is suffering and losing money. I will never buy an American made car and would never reccommend to anyone to buy a GMC. What an expensive learning experience. Whoever reads this don't make the same mistake we did. Buy a VOLVO. In all honesty...the tires they put on the car outlasted the car. That is pretty sad.

Strength:

Great ride, comfortable interior, stable, reasonable gas mileage.

Weakness:

Doesn't corner as well as the Jimmy I don't think. Frustrating number of recall, and warranty failure items. Expensive to maintain once off warranty.

I love the ride. I hate the hassles. Owned this Envoy since new, but about every 18,000km need new stablize link arm bushings replaced to get ride of the front end 'clunk', mainly at city road speeds 60k/40mph. Had problems with rear lights, redone on a recall. Computer chip issues, had to have the 4wd selector reset a couple of times, as no selection was showing on the rotary selector, and last week at 58,000k the transmission went, as I hit passing gear. Still in the shop now, but it is a major mechanical failure. I drive on some gravel roads, and some washboard, not particularly hard on my vehicle, but it has been quite a bit of hassle for me. The transmission problem crept up on me as a 'sort of' clunk as I selected "D" on occasion, and not feeling quite right on some shifts, but nothing you could put your finger on. Becoming very disappointed with the vehicle, but very happy with the treatment from GM, so far. I figure the stablize links need doing again before the warranty runs out in 1500k. The cost of the extended warranty is probably in indicator of the problems of the vehicle and the cost of them. The extended warranty insurance on the Envoy is outrageously priced, in my opinion, and is more than 3x that of my wife's Honda Accord.

Strength:

Nice ride, quiet. Love the Bose sound system

Weakness:

Too many recalls. MAJOR concern is that the engine has DIED TWICE and would not restart. Once at in the left lane of a very busy intersection and again two years later on an interstate highway at about 70MPH. On this occasion, the check brakes and ABS Brake warning lights came on when the engine quit. When trying to start the engine, none of the usual warning lights would come on. Finally, after about 45 minutes of sitting on the side of a very busy interstate with the air pressure of passing tractor/trailer rigs rocking the vehicle, the engine finaly started. On the final and sucessful attempt to start the engine, the horn sounded and all of the dash indicator lights came on. The service department at Sunrise GMC, Memphis, TN, says there were no computer codes indicating a reason for the engine failure. Sunrise also says that GMC has not issued any notices on engine failues of this nature. However, there are postings of similar problems with the 2002 Envoy on this site. Question is; when will GMC step up to the plate and admit we have a problem and FIX IT.

Purchased the 2002 Envoy from a private party with about 12,000 miles. Very nice vehicle with usual GM bugs in a new designed vehicle. Very short on luggage space for trips. The vehicle has one very serious problem. The engine, on occasion will die and will not restart for an extended time. (See Weaknesses)

could improve the gas mileage

Purchased vehicle in august 2003, it is now July 2004, it now has 85,000 kms or 50,000 miles. I have had no serious problems with this vehicle to date, transmission has a surge now and the while stopped, gas mileage is ok, the best is 27mpg, avg highway is 23-24 mpg, combined is 19-21; city 15-17mpg; excellent ride and handling; This SUV has seen a variety of weather conditions from freesing rain, heavy snow and severe rain and has handled all conditions exceptionly well in AWD or 4 HI; when using AWD in icing conditions can be scary if you think about it, the control is so good that you don't know you're driving on ice until you see other vehicles in the ditch or spinning out of control, this done at highyway speeds @ 70mph. Just finished a 2500 mile trip and vehicle was a dream to drive, extremely comfortable if you're driving a lot of miles. Gas mileage was good for the trip; have had better but was not loaded as heavily; trip avg was 24 mpg Did not purchase the extended warranty due to the high mileage I drive; purchased the extended warranty before on my Chevy Truck and didn't use it, the parts that broke down on my truck were not covered

Strength:

For once I got to stick it to the extended warranty company and there was nothing they could do about it. I paid $1200 and they paid out over $4000 in repairs.

Weakness:

Too numerous to mention.

Summary: Don't buy without an extended warranty. This car replaced our Isuzu Rodeo and was chosen hastily, as the Rodeo gave out on the week we were moving. If I had researched it more, I probably wouldn't have purchased it. But, since I bought it from a friend who worked at a dealership, I took his advice and purchased the premium extended warranty. Best choice I ever made. The $1200 I paid for the warranty was recouped the first year I owned the car. So far I've got a grand total of over $4000 of repairs that have been covered by the extended warranty. Plus, I've paid at least $500 out of my own pocket for repairs that were made where I inadvertently forgot to notify the warranty company. Coverage DENIED! I can't even remember all the repairs I've had made. The water pump. The suspension. The oil pump. The brake system. The stereo. Idler arm. It's like this car was manufactured the day after the Holiday Party at the GM plant. Funny story on the last round of repairs (at 99,900 miles into the 100,000-mile extended warranty). The mechanic said the front ball joints needed to be replaced. Since we were so close to the end of the warranty and because the warranty company has already lost their shirt on this deal, they required that an inspector check the car out before they'd authorize the repairs. The inspector showed up, checked out the car...and said the rear ones were bad too. He gave the go-ahead to replace them all. HA! I'm dreading the day one of the headlights goes. I was told by an acquaintance shortly after I purchased the car that it would cost about $600 to replace a headlamp. When I asked the dealer mechanic about it, he said that wasn't true. Reading some of the other reviews here, it seems my first information was more accurate. I don't know what went wrong with this vehicle. I've known plenty of people that owned or own Blazers and Jimmys and they love them. And that's all this car really is -- a Jimmy with a bunch of gew-gaws added to try to turn it into a luxury SUV. They fell far short with this one. I don't know how it happened, but it's like adding the wood interior accents, Bose 6-speaker stereo, heated seats, leather interior (with logo stitching) and other gadgets somehow had a negative affect on the mechanics of the vehicle. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with this dog for at least another 2 years until I can pay it off. And now my extended warranty has expired. The day this Envoy's paid off will be the same day a For Sale sign goes in the window.
