Model Reviewed: Jimmy SLS

Strength:

The Jimmy is very spacious and comfortable.

Weakness:

In 3 years I have replaced the battery, alternator, breaks every 10k - 15k miles and the Transmittion. I only have 6 more months to pay it off and I am trading it in. No more GMC products.

I would NOT recommend a GMC because they break down to often.

Strength:

The strengths are as follows: comfort, roominess, safety.

Weakness:

Although gas mileage hangs around 16 in the city, I wish it were a little more economical, especially in the current economic climate.

This is the best car that my husband and I have ever owned. We wanted a 4x4 with good hauling capacity for boat and something that was much safer and comfortable for a family than a sedan. We found everything we were looking for in the Jimmy 4x4. The ride is smooth and comfortable. The turning radius is tight. The car handles well in slippery road conditions, especially snow and on rough mountainous terrain. The inside is roomy, especially for trips to Home Depot. It is the best 4x4 SUV buy for the money. Friends of ours have bought smaller SUVs like Kia and Honda; they don't have the roominess nor the comfort. And, the gas mileage on the smaller SUVs is actually worse.

Strength:

Great room for a family. Comfortable leather interior. Looks sporty and sleek.

Weakness:

Crappy transmission, had tranny rebuilt and still having problems. Check engine light comes on during long drives. Idler arm and lower ball joints are constantly needing repair.

This SUV rides decent, but definitely not worth what i paid for it. Too many problems in the 2 years i have owned it, and i bought it only 2 years old. I have put way too much money into it and still have another $1500 to spend before it will drive the way it needs to. Unless you like putting money into a SUV constantly along with the gas, routine maintenance and insurance, buy something better made and more economical.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS ENTRY IS TO CANCEL OUT THE PHONY POSITIVE ENTRY BY ALPHIE (BELOW). IT'S OBVIOUSLY A PLOY FROM A GM EMPLOYEE TO TRY TO LEVEL OUT THE RATINGS FOR THIS PIECE OF CRAP. WELL, I'M NOT GOING TO ALLOW IT AS ALL THE REVIEWS KNOW AND POINT OUT THAT THIS PIECE OF CRAP FROM GM (AS WELL AS ITS MANY COUSINS) IS INEXCUSIBLE.

SORRY AUTO INDUSTRY! YOU CANNOT FIGHT THE TRUTH ANYMORE. YOUR FALSE ADVERTISING AND HUSHED MOUTH ON SHODDY QUALITY WILL NO LONGER WORK. WHY ARE YOU LOOKING HERE ANYWAY? SHOULDN'T YOU BE MEETING WITH YOUR ENGINEERS TO FINALLY COME UP WITH A DECENT PRODUCT... OR AT LEAST PREPARING A DEFENSE FOR YOU NEXT NEGLIGANCE LAWSUIT?

YOU MAKE ME SICK.

I WILL CANCEL OUT THE PHONY POSITIVE RATING WITH A MORE TRUTHFUL AND ACCURATE NEGATIVE RATING.

Strength:

the four wheel drive, lots of room for hauling items (I've moved twice with it), everything except listed below.

Weakness:

paint job, faded and chipped, rear window defrost fixed twice and still works only intermittently (but I got a real good scraper!)

I have loved this vehicle from the moment I bought it. It has been extremely reliable. In the harsh canadian winters, it has never let me down (and I never plugged it in). Could always count on it starting. Handles well. Gas mileage is not as good as a car, but if I had wanted a car, I would have bought one. I have camped with it and slept in the back which is roomy enough for two people and a dog. Very comfortable. LOVE IT!!!! The written reviews I found not to be very positive but I have never had a complaint about my jimmy.

Strength:

Good loking, fairly easy to work on yourself, strong 4.3/CPI engine, good 4L60E transmission, lots of aftermarket products available.

Weakness:

I haven't had the brake problems the others describe even with 145,000 miles now, but I must agree with some of the fit and finish comments and a few design flaws. The paint on my hood is developing tiny cracks. I think they put the clearcoat on too thick after they painted it. A leak developed under my thrid brake light. I replaced the entire $65 rear weather seal before I found out that isn't where the leak was. If you look up the service bulletins for my '94 model you'll find apx. 283 have been sent to GM dealers. Here is a list of things I've replaced because they wore out after apx 70,000 miles: Windshield washer motor (after I tried fixing it with new non-returnable circuit board that local dealer said was the problem). It had a mind of it's own. I have had the same problem with my wife's GM vehicle. I ended up buying one from a junkyard for $200 less than dealer wanted. Driver side electric window motor died, bought a remanufactured one and installed it myself. The CPI, central port injection unit is know to develop a leak in the regulator with high mileage and must be replaced. I just replaced mine after finding an out-of-state GM dealer that sold me the unit for $250 less than the local one. This engine also is bad for carbon buildup in the EGR system. You need to run good gas or a fuel additive to help keep it clean or plan on puling the EGR valve off from time to time for a good wire brushing.

The Toyotas, and Hondas I've owned had better fit and finish for the most part, but they too had a few problems. To keep a vehicle looking good and running properly you have to take some responsibility yourself. Overall I like my Jimmy because I have learned how to become a mechanic while working on it, because I won't pay the dealer big bucks for parts and labor. I buy parts at the best price and do it my self. When I pulled the intake manifold to replace the CPI unit I went ahead and removed the cylinder heads and had a valve job done. I bought new springs, retainers, seals, locks, gaskets, pushrods, rocker arm studs, and roller rockers. I rebuilt the entire top end. It runs great again. When I finish working, it will be a good looking sport truck. If I had it to do over I'd buy it again.

Model Reviewed: GMC Jimmy SLE

Strength:

Strong V6 Engine, Quiet running, Very Punchy off the line, Very Comfortable seating, Lots of Room for storage, Tough Suspension, Rides very smoothly over Rough terrain, CD Player Doesn't skip and sounds really nice Very Cold A/C System, I like the Overhead console for Storage, with the built in compance and outside temperature. Instrument panel self check is quick and effective and doesn't take all day to finish.

Weakness:

Comes Equipt with standard donut spare tire, which should come standard with Full size, (In case one's off road), AC Vents should allow for positioning where defogger or floor instead of using vents to blow on the human body allowing a person to delevop a cold due to extreem air coldness, Truck goes through roughly 1L of oil every 1000k Which Shouldn't use any. Plugs are akward to get at, for changing, thus making it more expensive for a tune up. Other than that, Trucks Fine,

I have had this truck for a year now, and not a single problem, However, I do find them expensive to maintain, but the key is maintaining the truck will prevent problems. I have put over 30,000k on the vehile in less than a year, and still not have needed to replace any brake parts, I have had to replace an alternator, but that was due to incorrect boosting of another car. These trucks are not Sports cars and shouldn't be driven like one, I have been off road, and it handles just as good off road as on road,

Strength:

Strong motor, good interior, good ride, good a/c

Weakness:

Thirsty, low ground clearence (if you want to do serious off roading the Jimmy is just too low)

I purcahsed this truck used. It was yr old with 26k and had been a rental. In 2 yrs I've put on over 40k miles with very few problems. On bad injector was replaced by the dealer under warranty and there has always been a buzzy rattle in the dash at low speed. Otherwise it's run great. It was the best handling of the small SUVs I found. Replaced the tires and shocks at 50k and now it rides smoothly, corners well & is easy to park. The interior is well laid out and very comfortable. With the rear seat folded down there's more cargo room than a Jeep or 4Runner.

Strength:

4x4 for light to medium off-roading. Enough room for my outdoor adventures. Has the power when I need it.

Weakness:

Spungy brakes which were easily fixed.

Roomy, nice ride, dependable. Front disc brakes required the normal 50-60K miles replacement and expected. Good maintenance when sound preventative maintenance is applied. Haven't had any major problems. The operators manual's maintenance guide is excellent.
