Strength:
Power, Looks, towing capability.
Weakness:
Primative suspension geometry, lousy fit and finish. I bought this truck because of its looks, high level of features for the cost and its towing capability. I traded in my Nissan Pathfinder which was a very reliable vehicle but underpowered. Similar Products Used: Toyota 4Runner |

Strength:
looks good, love the leater interior and all the bells and whistles (the ones that work, anyway).
Weakness:
Too many expensive repairs, I'm always afraid it's going to break down on me. Too much body roll. I think it's ridiculous that I've replaced the EGR Valve 3 times! When I first saw the Jimmy, I liked it. I traded in a 944 Porsche with $144,000+ miles. As soon as I drove the Jimmy off the lot, the CD player quit working. Since then, it's been a downhill ride. I haven't had a lot of the engine noise that I keep seeing everyone writing about, although I've heard the loud thump twice, and I don't have a great complaint about the brakes. I spend a fortune putting gas in this little guzzler, and I've also had numerous and pricey repair bills. I've replaced the oil sending unit (when it went out all my oil leaked out, and I barely made it to the repair shop). The park light on the passenger side has NEVER worked. I ended up replacing it myself, but it blew out a couple of days later, something's definately screwed up in there. The weather stripping on the rear passenger door is loose and won't seem to stick no matter what I use. My washer fluid holder has a leak and won't hold fluid, my rear window defogger doesn't work, the rear washer fluid doesn't work and the digital temperature indicator has not worked since I bought it. Here's a kicker......I've had the EGR valve replaced 3 times in five years. (Not a cheap repair). My husband has hated this thing since the day we bought it, and I have always defended it, but since this last EGR valve thing, I'm beginning to agree with him. I'm stuck with it since I owe more on it than it's worth. Similar Products Used: n/a |

GMC Jimmy 4WD
Strength:
Good comfort on the highway, easy to maneuver in the city, enough comfort controls to make driving a pleasure. Good ride quality.
Weakness:
Engine/electrical problems from day one. Dealer fixes them but something else goes wrong. Fuel deliver problem at 5000 miles, waiting for dealer assessment :( Overall, good for the money, but not much finish as far as interior and minor details. Good Power + Good Looks = That's about it!!
Weakness:
Now remember that this all happened to me at once. Built to last!! My A**!! Security Light came on which meant my Passlock System was not working. New Passlock Sensor needed. Four Wheel Drive was inoperable. New Encoder motor and front axle actuator needed. Gas pedal would stick. Cost $85.00 to fix. Service Engine Soon light came on, car began switching gears poorly and began leaking fluid. Imagine to my surprise I needed a whole new Transmission. This all occurred at 45,000 miles. What a joke. Now my problems are resurfacing again at 58,000 miles and the Service Techs at my dealership can't figure out what's wrong. My Jimmy makes a loud, echoing, "boing" noise when I start my ignition and sometimes does the same thing when the car has been turned off for an hour. The sound is comparable to someone hitting my gas tank with a hammer, although it might not have anything to do with the gas tank. GMC Tech. Assistance says it is a problem specific to the Jimmy but isn't sure what it is. Exhaust? Gas Tank? Sound like a defect to me. Has anyone ever heard of this or know the solution to fixing it. Let me know. I couldn't in my right mind sell this thing and feel good about myself. I'm thinking about driving it into the Ohio River. After reading all of the other reviews, I'm sure my problems are going to continue. My experience with this car has been a nightmare. I have owned it for one year now and bought it while still under Manufactuers Warranty. It was turned in on a lease. The first three months it was a dream. The the problems hit me like ton of bricks. Dealing with GMC customer assistance has been the worst experience of my life. Trying to start a campaign to start a recall on one of the problems I am having in which GMC Technical assistance says is a problem specific to the Jimmy. Yet they won't step up to the plate because they don't care about making you happy if your 3/36 warranty is up. Wanted to warn others not to waste their $$$$ and see if anyone else is having the same problem with their Jimmy as me. Similar Products Used: I cannot compare this vehichle to anything because I have never driven a pile a junk like this to compare it to. GM lost a family worth of loyal customers here, with there inabilty to "make me happy." I will not recommend this vehicle or any other GM vehichle to anyone for the rest of my life. They blew it! |

Strength:
Great looking SUV. Fairly comfortable ride.
Weakness:
Brakes, electrical system, cargo space Purchased my Jimmy new in late '97 (when I was single) and can honestly say it's been just an average vehicle. I'm edging up on 70K miles and more things are starting to go wrong--4WD fuze blows out due to a short, brakes have a soft spot in them on right turns, door-ajar buzzer comes on when turning right. Now that I have a family, the storage / cargo compartment isn't big enough for trips. Pretty decent vehicle for a single guy / gal who understands that some stuff is going to go bad on every car eventually. Not a good choice for a family vehicle. Similar Products Used: Only had cars prior to this vehicle. Useless to compare. Suffice it to say my next vehicle will be a full-sized truck. |

Nice stereo system. Nice leather interior.
Weakness:
None I bought a 2000 Jimmy in February 2000. It's been back to dealers 8 times. The rear differential was repaired/replaced 4 times, CV joints, sway bar, suspension problems, lots of body movement, especially on the highway, a variety of problems. Although the interior is nice, it's small, with little luggage space. Similar Products Used: I owned a 1994 GMC Surburban that was the best vehicle I've ever owned. However, the experience I've had with my Jimmy has been horrible. |

brakes, thirsty if you're stomping on it At 93,000 miles, this thing is still running like a bat out of hell! It has all the power it used to (4.3 is a little thirsty, but I'd rather have the dependable power compared to some of the junk on the road nowadays). Standard wear and tear items and some minor rust which I have been easily refinishing. I have had this thing all over the East Coast and out to the Midwest in the most extreme winter and summer weather, drove it everywhere you could imagine including 4X4ing, beaches, snow, mud, etc. Just keep it clean, though. And she's still ticking. Similar Products Used: Explorer (Fords are junk on and off the track) |
