Great ride, comfortable on long trips - as long as the weather is sunny and roads are dry.
Weakness:
Thank goodness for an extended warranty Was in the shop six times before the air conditioning was properly repaired. Absolutely impossible in the snow or ice -won't shift out of 4-wheel drive once its engaged. Shifts into neutral when driving. Won't shift out of third gear when going up hills in town. Oil leaks, steering leak, fluid leak at intake valve Plastic parts break easily. Car has had over $5000 in warranty work in two years. I bought this car for long trips between Connecticut and Texas. I thought it would be comfortable, roomy and safe. Similar Products Used: Nissan Pathfinder. Ford truck. Nissan truck. |

It's a GMC. It's NOT A FORD!! Strong motor. Reliable. Exellent look.
Weakness:
The obvious BRAKES, but there not expensive and it comes with the territory. If you can't handle it buy a Geo Metro. I bought this off a my father @152,000 miles. It has had no problems short of regular wear and tear. This is the original motor, transmission, and transfer case. This vehicle runs damn near as sound as new. The only things ever replaced were: Tires Brakes (Shoes, Pads, Rotors, Drums) U-Joints My Yukon has been regularly serviced since new. IT HASEN'T BEEN BEAT. Which sounds like some people's rediculous complaints/expectations. The only thing recent as far as problems is my EGR valve ($200)went bad causing bad mileage and so did one of the O2 sensors. The drivers seats is ripped near the power controls along with the bushings going out. At a 160K miles I have nothing but good things to say about this vehicle and when my dad gets rid of his '01 Denali I look forward to buying that off him. The strong acceleration for a 5.3 liter engine and comfortable ride with a decent set of standard options stands out.
Weakness:
The quality of minor interior and exterior components is noticable (after the car is at home.) For example, no trim on wheel wells, cheap plastic parts inside, and minor workmanship flaws that will cause electrical reliability problems if not fixed. We bought the basic Yukon XL 2wd with the intention of having a comfortable driving vehicle for longer trips. I drive at about 62-65 mph (right lane) and have found the ride good and the mileage acceptable at 17.85 mpg. The truck handles well even at higher speeds with the execption of braking. I've found that I have to apply the brakes more firmly than expected and this requires a greater distance behind other cars on the freeway compared to our Saturn. This is to be expected for a large SUV, but it does take getting used to. My only regret on options that I didn't get is the Driver Information Center. The read-outs it provides would definitely be useful for my over-analytical mind. I haven't pulled my boat yet, but I expect that the 5.3 liter/3.73 axle combination will be adequate. I used my 6.2 liter diesel truck to pull the boat before getting the Yukon and the difference in torque will likely be significant. Overall, I am happy with the Yukon and in particular the comfort of the ride. A five hour ride does not leave us tired and cranky like in smaller cars. We realize that the SUVs are politically incorrect today, but the extra expense in gas offsets the risk of exhaustion of longer trips. Similar Products Used: 3/4 GMC Diesel |

Great looks, tight turning radius, powerful engine.
Weakness:
Transmission problems, poor gas mileage. Probably the best overall vehicle I have owned. Except for one problem. The transmission shifts between 2nd and 3rd gear are extended in very cold weather. If I don't travel faster than 33 MPH, I'm stuck in 2nd gear. And if I do get into 3rd, and slow down to 29 MPH, then I'm stuck in 2nd again. Very bothersome not to mention adds to the already poor gas milage. Had it at the dealership 6 times. 2 years and 4 repairs later, they tell me, "Oh, wait a minute. It was designed to do that." Seems the engineers wanted the engine to warm up faster. Took 2 years to figure that out. I have spoken to numerous people with the same vehicle, none of which have noticed the same "engineered to do that" transmission. I read a few previous postings of poor service from GMC corporate and couldn't agree more. I am in the process of pursuing Lemon Law litigation. Wish me luck. Good looking and functional.
Weakness:
Many problems! Oil consumption, three faulty radios, seatbelt replacement, Driver side electric window didn't work, Drivers seat leather seam came apart.Intermitent electrical problems which effected the door locks going up and down for no reason. I have a 2001 Yukon XL which burns a quart of oil every 3,000 miles. I can't get the dealership to resolve the problem. They tell me that GMC says the vehicle is within specification even if it uses 1 quart every 2,000 mile. This is ridiculous. I now have 30,000 miles and it is in the shop for the final time. They have told me GMC has put out a recall for faulty PVC valves which causes oil consumption. If this does not solve the problem then I will get rid of it and I will never buy another GMC or Chevy SUV again. I have owned a 1993 Suburban. 1995 GMC Yukon and now this 2001 Yokon XL. All were bought new. This my be my last Genreal Motors vehicle ever. |

gas miliage, but if you are looking for a vehicle similar, you will suffer in miliage. Very good vehicle...hard on gas, but I knew that going in, body is solid, pulls a 3500lb enclosed trailer anywhere I want to go, dual exhaust is great for the added Horse power, I also added a K&N air filter for better air flow which helped that HP and the miliage Similar Products Used: GMC K1500 GMC K2500 Chevy 1500 chevy tahoe never a ford exploder |

Weakness:
NOT RELIABLE!!!POOR TOO NO CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM GMC!!! This truck is becoming the worst vehicile I've ever owned. And will most likely be my last GM purchase. With the failure of 4 batteries, 4 alternators, 3 fuel pumps, the deteroration of the front heater hose fitting on the intake and now a coolant leak at the intake gasket all before 58000 miles. Oil Consumption, Electrical, rattles on start-up, GMC will not recognize that this engine has problems I just had to trade my 2001 GMC Yukon XL due to a major oil problem and GMC would do nothing about it. In July 2001, I bought a new Yukon and the oil light came on at 2,000 miles. There was no oil on the stick at that time. We added 2 qts. At 3,000 miles it used 1 1/2 qts. The dealership kept giving me the run-around telling me that the break-in period was between 3,000 - 5,000 miles. Then the break-in period went from 5,000 - 8,000. Then up to 10,000. I was waiting for the period to be 36,000 when the warranty ran out. When I traded, it had 27,000 miles and used 1 qt of oil every 3,000 miles. They, of course, said this was normal. Then, the electrical system started giving me major problems. Everytime we took it to the dealership, they would state on their GMC computer "can't duplicate customer complaint". Even when the thing was towed in and would not start. I've spoken to a lot of people that have Yukon's and they have not had the first problem with oil. We were afraid to hang on to the vehicle any longer due to the warranty running out. That was a lot of $$ to pay for a car that consumed oil without a reason. From day 1 til 16 months later, GMC would NEVER recognize a problem with this vehicle. It stranded me and my children 3 times within a 16 month period. Similar Products Used: Ford Explorer |

comfort, performance, looks
Weakness:
reliability and service are poor. Would not want to own this vehicle without a warranty. Fortunately, I have leased and can walk away. This has been a very trouble prone vehicle; electronics, sensors, body moldings, exhause, brakes and other annoying minor defects that should not be found in a vehicle this expensive. The repairs and service levels have been mediocre. I would not recommend this vehicle because of repair history, but love the looks, performance and power. |
