Warranty Distinctive Styling Comfort Best in Class
Weakness:
Mediocre gas mileage, attributed to the heavy vehicle weight. No track record of Quality like Honda/Toyota, however warranty helps allot. My wife and I purchased a Hyundai Santa Fe GLS all wheel drive with option pkg 4, which gives you ABS brakes and traction control. After allot or research of the smaller SUV's on the market, we came to the conclusion that the Santa Fe gives you a better warranty and offers better styling for the money. The Ford Escape was the only serious contender for us in this price range. The Escape similarly equipped came in at about the same price. However, for us it came down to the warranty 5/60 for the Santa Fe and 3/36 for the Escape and we think the Santa Fe has a very distinctive and more luxurious look. Although I will say for the pure off road types, the Escape is probably a better choice. Unlike some of the other reviews, we think the acceleration is ok with our 6 cylinder engine. In summary, we are very satisfied with our purchase. However the real test will be to see how well this vehicle is doing in 1,2,3 and 4 years from now. Hyundai Santa Fe GLS
Strength:
Comfortable, clean features inside, quiet, rides and drives more like a car than an SUV. Comfortable seating. I can go 300 miles on a tank of gas (current mileage about 20 mpg) than with my previous Ford Explorer (about 240 miles on a tank).
Weakness:
I don't have the external antena for the radio, I just have the antena on the left-rear window and the reception is frequently not good. On my explorer I would get an internal bell if I left the lights on and openned the door. The Santa Fe doesn't make a sound. The lights could be left on on a cloudy day and you could forget to turn them off. These are truly minor points compared to how much I enjoy this car. In northern New Jersey traffic is an everyday occurrence. I almost don't mind now that I get to sit in it in my new Santa Fe. I had to come back and write a review since I relied heavily on the reviews from this group in determining to buy my Santa Fe. Thank you all. Similar Products Used: 98 Ford Explorer Sport |

Santa Fe GLS
Strength:
- Price vs value: We feel that there was no better deal to be had anywhere. Period. - Looks: this is a very distinctive looking vehicle. It turns heads everywhere we go. - Ride: very smooth, quiet, and comfortable. - Features: We feel like we're getting away with something with all the feathres this vehicle has! - ABS/TCS system: A must-have in the oftentimes wet environment of Houston
Weakness:
Speakers: the tweeters in the front chirp a bit when an announcer is talking, and the right rear speaker rattles a bit on any music with bass, but I'm going to have that looked at on Sunday when they attach the trailer hitch. After exhaustive research on the small/mid SUV's, the choice to purchase a Santa Fe was, to us, a no-brainer. Yesterday afternoon, we picked up our new 2002 Pewter Santa Fe, and are EXTREMELY impressed with it. We got the optional tow package, but otherwise, it's a GLS; pretty standard. That, however, is a misnomer. Standard GLS means RICH with features and options! I've heard of the V6 4WD being sluggish from stop, but I've not had ANY problem with this (I'm still in the break-in stage, so I'm not gunning it too much at all). Also, the transmission seems very solid, and braking is good for a vehicle of it's weight. Seats are very comfortable, and aside from a small rattle from the right rear speaker, everything is perfect! Similar Products Used: I used to own a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer. While it was a solid vehicle, the ABS was fraught with problems that even resulted in a recall. Also, the vehicle IN 1998 was more expensive than the 2002 Santa |

Weakness:
none yet We looked at several vehicles in this class and the Santa Fe was well ahead of the compitition. We opted for the 4cyl 2wd with auto. We don't go off road so it has done fine for us. Just went through the first tank and got 24 mpg. Everyone we talk to loves the look. Overall a great vehicle Similar Products Used: CRV, Liberty |

Less fuel consumption would be a big plus – but again – no surprises, I knew this when I made the purchase. {-} No surprises! I researched all SUVs and the decision came down to two: the Santa Fe and a not-so-SUV, the Toyota Matrix. We won’t use the car for off road but need the sure-footedness of 4WD. We wanted a reasonably comfortable ride and the car would be used for trips up to 4000 miles at a clip. These two cars filled the bill since they were 4WD and built on a car platform. The Santa Fe won out based on interior room, 10Yr./100,000 mile warranty and style/appearance inside and out. The best reason for the purchase was the smile on my wife’s face. She was set on the Matrix until she drove the Santa Fe. I specifically wanted the Sand Stone color in the LX version with 4WD. Therefore, I paid sticker. There aren’t many deals to be had when there is only one car that meets your requirements in a 60-mile radius of where you live. Even the Internet dealers wanted sticker price but they couldn’t come up with a car to meet my requirements. If you’re purchasing, good luck in finding the one you want. By comparison to what is out there today, I feel that this is a good value for money. Similar Products Used: None |

A differential lock locks a vehicle into full time four wheel drive. I think the previous reviewer ment a low-range gearing and transfer case (the Sante Fe is full time 4 wheel drive, but lacks a transfer case and low range gearing). Then again, so does the Honda CRV, Ford Escape, Mazda Tribute, Toyota Rav 4, Land Rover Freelander, Subaru Forester, and Saturn Vue. The only SUV's in this price range with a transfer case sold in the US are the Jeep Wrangler, Nissan X-Terra, and Suzuki Vitara. The Sante Fe, like most of the small sport utes, is a vehicle designed to preform well on the road, handle snow and ice decently, and deal with basic off road use (forest service roads and the like). If you actually drive over boulders and through deep mud, the Sante Fe is the wrong choice. It handles the road nicely though, gets decent fuel economy, and can take on all the off-roading that 99% of drivers will ever do. A ten year warranty makes up for a lot of quality concerns :) Also consider the rampant recalls of competing vehicles like the Escape, Tribute, CRV, and Vue. Hyundai's may not be the best in this regard, but they certainly are not the worst. |
