Strength:

Well-appointed. Few 'options' as this vehicle has everything possible. Ultra-ride quality. Best I've ever had... Even the leather interior adapts to the heat/cold so that temperature-related weather characteristics so typical, are missing in exchange for comfort.

Controls are well-placed. A secured feeling due to the vehicles weight and size provide one with an edge of driver control and feel.

Weakness:

Where's the engine...??? A *very* underpowered V-6 makes this a dangerous vehicle at times. You simply cannot move this 5000LB item with the V-6, the 'automatic' transmission (no choice...5 speed would have helped)and the extra weight also of the 4WD 'automated' system. Sadly, Nissan just isn't V-8 capable yet.

High cabin noise from wind and a hard-working engine make the BOSE stereo system difficult to hear at times.

Having been a 'Pathfinder' owner, I wanted the 'upgrade' to the QX-4. Basically the same car, all dressed-up. Or so I had hoped for.

It is all dressed-up and a beautiful, sexy and classy vehicle. But the 'Pathfinder' saves one nearly 900 lbs and provides a great 5-speed gearbox; which makes for an acceptable V-6.

Both are 'Made In Japan' and the workmanship is reflective of that. Near flawless.

Look at the 'Pathfinder' and maybe even the very popular 'Xterra'(same engine and gearbox). Then compare the QX4. All Nissan/Infiniti products and quality evident.

Strength:

SOLID construction, not a creak to be heard. Electronic 4WD

Weakness:

Gets a little noisy under acceleration. Coud do with some more ponies underthe hood.

Much wider inside that the 4 runner. The appointments are good, fit is great and the stereo cranks. Fully loaded, there isn't much to want for.
Handles the mild off-road sufficiently, snow/ice no problem at all. Yes it handles
Good thing is you rarely see another on in your rear view mirror.

Infiniti has not stood behind their product. I have found their customer service to be very lacking.

Model Reviewed: Ininiti QX4

Strength:

It rides more like a car than most SUVs but still has the muscle (and soul) of a truck.

Weakness:

It's a little underpowered and a little noisy

(1997 Model) - It's a great SUV for someone who really just needs a tough and rugged way to get around town or make a trip to Home Depot.

Strength:

Great looking car. Good handling in ice and snow. The driver's seat is very comfortable for long drives.

Weakness:

The major weakness is the lack of)power. The turning radius makes it diffcult to park in tight spots. I have had to replace tires every 36,000 miles. The alignment is out and can't seem to be fixed. The brakes have had to be serviced quite a few times. First major brake service was only after 20,000 miles. The cost of the regular maintenance check-up are very expensive. I spent more on the regular checks while under warranty than my sister spent on my old car that I gave to her, in the same period. Makes me wonder if I should have kept the old car!!
It is quite difficult to get the Infiniti serviced except in a major urban area. The size of the back seats are too small..really is comfortable only for small people or very short distances. The head lights should come on automatically. A lot of the little annoying things... the stick shift for the 4 X 4, gas tank release locations, lights, etc. seems to have been taken care of in the new models.

I have had my QX4 for 4 years now and I still enjoy driving it and it still looks good. I have had no serious problems with it. I am now thinking about replacing it and am looking at the new QX4 models. It was the best SUV for the $$$ when I bought. My other choice at that time was the Ford Explorer (good thing I didn't go with that!).

Olds cars, Ford Explorer. I like the Mercedes SUV but the QX4 is such better value that it is hard to justify the difference.

I bought this used with 23,000 miles and at half the price of a new QX4.
Now squeaks or rattles, and everything is still perfectly functional.

From reading the reviews, I was worried it would feel underpowered, but it seems adequate to me. The transmission is perfectly responsive and well mated to the engine. It shifts smoothly yet not with a mushy feel like an RX300. If your not afraid to use the higher rpm's, I find the performance quite acceptable.

The user friendliness of the CD system is great. I like having both the stack changer, and the dash mounted slot for putting in a new CD without the hassle of messing with the stack changer. The Bose Dial bass and treble, balance and fader knobs definitely are much easier to use than more sophisticated electronic controls used on some other sound systems.

The electric seat controls are in a terrible position. To adjust the seat when driving, you have to reach way back to manipulate the controls. They would be better located in a more forward position. The roof console with compass, and temperature readings is very useful, along with the compartment to put sunglasses in. The three compartment storage bin under the armrest is excellent. Convenient place to put wallet, toll tickets, mobile phone etc.. on the top, then a big bin for other miscellania.

The upward lifting tailgate is among the best designs of any SUV's.
#1. It shields you from the rain when loading groceries or other stuff.
#2. It is easiest to fully open compared to side opening doors when parallel parked.
#3. The separately opening glass is great when just needing to chuck in small items.
#4. Use the key or remote release at the dash to open the glass.

I also like the "underbody" position for the spare tire. Who wants to fight with an external carrier every time you want to open the gate?

Thoughtful touches like a under the carpet "wet bin" and cargo net with securing points in a variety of positions: Vertical forward position to prevent items from falling forward onto passengers, Vertical rear position to keep items from falling out when opening the tailgate, horizontal position to keep gear secured down on the floor in rough conditions.

All in all, I love this baby.
