Model Reviewed: QX4 with Navigation System

Strength:

Relatively Quiet and smooth for a REAL SUV
Good Off-road capabilities for a Luxury SUV with decent ground clearance
Nice, high driving position reinforces the SUV's tough capabilities
Very comfortable and full of features, nice instrumentation
Fantastic BOSE sound system - one of best in an SUV!
Very Good reliability

Weakness:

Really bad Navigation system - A CD ROM based unit, when most competitors have the DVD based unit which is light years ahead is absolutely not acceptable on a 40K luxury vehicle
Excessive windnoise (due to unaerodynamic and dated body) at freeway speeds
Very sluggish from standstill. Does this vehicle really have 240hp and 265lb ft. of torque??? Certainly doesn't feel like it. Feels more like half that amount - It feels as though the engine is struggling very hard to move the vehicle.

The Infinity QX4 is a really nice vehicle in general, but it does have some glaring faults. It feels very underpowered. It is almost impossible for me to believe Infinity's claim that the vehicle has 240hp. A 200hp Mitsubishi Montero I test drove felt much more peppy. The Navigation system is from the stone-age (CD ROM). Even with these faults it is overall a fairly good vehicle and I expect it to be very reliable.

Similar Products Used:

Lexus RX 300 - extremely bad (or virtually non-existent) off road abilities
Acura MDX - Too big and bulky and very bad value for money , in short supply and price gouging and cheating by the dealerships
Mitsubishi Montero- fantastic vehicle but I did not purchase because of the lack of "Reliability History" which is the most important factor in my purchase decision.

Strength:

Good turning radius

Weakness:

Poorest designed vehicle I have ever owned. Poor ride, weak engine, poor a/c, seats unconfortable, poor service from dealer

If you see a good review for this vehicle, you better be suspicious. It is probably entered by a Infinity salesman

Model Reviewed: Infiniti QX4

Strength:

adjustable xenon headlamps, full time 4wd, interior/exterior design, rear live axle for true off-road, cargo space, luxurious and covenience amenities.

Weakness:

rear drum brakes, no wood trim in the center instrument panel.

Got the SUV at end of Sept. 2000.
After the initial break-in period of 1000 miles, I had the opportunity to take it to a mild mud covered road and a short mountain climb; I have to say that I was impressed with how the full time auto 4wd with limited-slip diff handled the mud and the climb on an imperfect road.
I'm planning to take the QX4 to a more adventurous roads this summer and will know then how it really handles on the more rugged side.

For off-road use with factory setup, I have to rate QX4 a 4 star due to its ridiculous rear drum brake setup, no locking diff offered (although limited-slip is close and good enough most of the time), can use a little more ground clearance and wish it had a height adjustable suspension.

For city driving, where most people drive it including myself, the QX4 is no doubt a 5 star. The low bass on the Bose stereo needs more work but the sound is still ok. Overall, I'm very pleased with the way it behaves in city driving. Handling is good for a SUV, its comfortable and luxurious feel from wood trim center shift console, front and rear heated seats to the 17" 3 spoke wheels make this SUV enjoyable to look at and as well as drive.

Strength:

Everything.

Weakness:

NO rear view self-dimming mirror and it maybe a good idea to add new 5 speed transmission with auto stick.

This is my 4th Nissans product and I have no compliance.
Nissan makes very reliable cars and SUV’s.
I will recommend to test drive 2001 QX4 before you make your choice and I’m sure you will love this car. It is powerful, quiet, fast, very responsive and very stable at highway speed, very good handling and good cargo room, excellent quality materials and craftsmanship..
If someone ever will tell you: “this is a Pathfinder” don’t listen him or her, they are just jealous because you got the excellent car for a very dissent price.
I use to have Pathfinder 1997 SE fully loaded, but it is no compares to 2001 QX4 at all.
I test-drove a new Pathfinder 2001 with the same engine and similar auto 4x4 system, but it is still a Pathfinder. Infiniti fills totally different-like real luxury care of top class.
In terms of price money is not a issue for me, but QX4 has a excellent price for its self for a 38601 MSRP (NAV system extra 2k) you can get fully loaded, with all toys really luxury SUV. I highly recommend this SUV.

In fact beginning of my car hunt I was seeking about Mercedes ML430 and Lexus RX300 and BMW X5.
I really like RX300, but it fills to me underpowered, but well dun. In terms of 4x4 system it doesn’t have low range (very useful some times).
ML430 it is a not really a Mercedes-Benz. Alabama (US) build Mercedes-Benz does have some relationship with a real Mercedes-Benz; build in Stuttgart (Germany), but only by label “Mercedes-Benz”.
I believe you know those issues with a build quality of Alabama build ML’s.
ML’s build in Europe is totally different ML’s.
X5 it is a very nice CAR, not a SUV. Very fast and handles excellent, but no cargo room at all. X5’s cargo room even smaller then Hyundai’s Accent trunk. But definitely it’s a BMW.

Strength:

reduced engine noise.
powerful engine.
luxury features comparable to European competitors.
SMOOTH transmission, and SMOOOOOTH driving experience.
It's a SUV, not a SUV/Caravan hybrid!
Great service.
Good with the corners.

Weakness:

Rear Live Axle suspension.
The interior door lever looks really cheap.
The headroom, legroom, shoulder room, and hip room are small. So not as roomy as competitor's model.
eventhough the engine noise is reduced, it still sound rough.

This baby is a steal for it's class. Yes, it looks similar to a Pathfinder, but not exactly the same. Comparing the exterior, Infiniti has a better finishing, giving it a classier expression. Comparing the interior, the luxury, the comfort, the way the seat is tilted, that fluffy yet supportive leather seat is just... PERFECT!

Engine noise is greatly reduced with respect to the 240 HP engine. Like many Japanese Car, you get a very smooth smooth transmission, so you don't have those jolts from switching gear or kick down. Driving is also great in the way it eats the corner... okay, it's not a civic, but it is so stable on turn that you'll definitly be amazed about it.

When I decided to buy a SUV, I wanted a suv, NOT a van with bigger wheels. Let me tell you something, QX4 is a genuine SUV, furthermore, it's a luxury version.

Infiniti's warranty service is great great great! Two yrs ago I bought my first QX4, and I drove it like MAD! I guess I was a 35 yrs old with an 18 yrs old heart! I broke two of my front suspension, and Infiniti replaced it for me at no charge... well I have to pay for labour. But it's a fraction of the cost of two suspension.

Now, what I hate about this car is the rear live axle suspension compare to the independent suspensions that RX300 offers. I have more confident in independent suspensions cause IT IS much better off road, it's more stable, less tilt, and less bumpy in off road conditions.

secondly, the door lever that QX4 offered is an insult! for the price I'm paying, Infiniti give me a flamsy piece of plastic as an interior door lever? The designer need a coffee break!!!

Although the seats are comfortable, yet the room inside this SUV is shallow. Hard to explain, but just goto your dealer and try it out. It's 5 - 10% smaller than other competitors' model. Which is a problem for larger people.

Overall - perfect for the price and the features it provides. Although not roomy, and the engine still sounds rough. But it is still a solid performer with the great quality interior seats it uses, powerful engine, and abundence features. Give it a test drive, it's free anyways.

Similar Products Used:

Lexus RX300 - RX300 has better handling, but less power. RX300 is roomy, good handling and also smooth driving experience. But it looks more like a van than a suv. I think their suspension is great (all independent), yet it's still soft on turns. It makes me wonder how it performs off road (perhaps, not recommanded!).

Jeep Grand Cheerokee LTD - 2001 QX4 provides better features in all aspect. QX4 brake is sharp and sensitive. I think Jeep should redesign their ABS system, it's kinda scary. (PS. I KNOW HOW TO USE THE ABS)Yet, Jeep is quite roomy, however, the seats feels numb after two - three hours of driving. It felt like sitting on a water bed type of seats.

Ford Explorer - amongst all v8 engine, this one is pretty thirsty if you do punch the pedle. Going from full to empty at light speed! Similar to QX4 in one aspect... not roomy for a SUV.

Weakness:

MUD FLAPS DO NOT PREVENT SNOW FROM OBSCURING VIEW ON REAR WINDOW. WIPERS DO NOT HELP. VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE OUT IN POOR WEATHER. HEATING SYSTEM PUTS OUT TOO MUCH HEAT ON DRIVERS SIDE AND NOT ENOUGH ON PASSENGER SIDE. DEALER I USED WAS NOT HELPFUL WHEN PROBLEMS AROSE. Model Reviewed: Infiniti QX4

Strength:

- Overall fit and finish is superb.
- Interior styling is noticably upscale with opulence abounding.
- Interior controls are well laid out and easy to use with every option you can think.
- Exterior styling is also beautiful. Somehow the nissan engineers have melded a body that is a unique blend of sleekness and sophistication spliced seamlessly with muscule and kick-ass attitude. The custom 3 spoke 17 inch wheels dressed with Michelin LTX tires add to that attitude.
- The new V6 DOHC engine winding out 240hp is the best engine I've ever had under the hood of any vehicle I've owned. It's smooth, quiet and very responsive under all driving conditions and unlike the old underpowered engine (2000 and less), this thing will launch you effortlessly around anything you care to pass and yet do it with finesse.
- The ride is amazing for a vehicle this size. Body roll is next to nil when carving a good corner at 80mph.
- Selection of your drive modes is very easy with the electronic dial which for 2wd, 4wd (auto), 4wd (high) and 4wd (low). Unlike the Grand Cherokee, the wheels are locked right away when you select 4wd instead of having to move forward a few feet to engage.

Weakness:

- Gas mileage is not the greatest as is the case with most Sport Utilities.
- It drinks premium gas only.

There is simply nothing that can touch the 2001 QX4 for the $31,000+US price tag. I highly recommend it.

Similar Products Used:

The Grand Cherokee Limited 1994 and 1998 vehicles I've owned are simply not as good in most respects when compared to the 2001 QX4.
I've also driven the Ford Explorer, Expedition and the ML320 Mercedez, RX300 and others. Forget it. The QX4 smokes them all.

Most luxurious suv you can buy. The ride is unmatched. The all mode 4WD works perfectly whether you driving through snow, mud, or rain. Best factory stereo system of any company. The dealership service is amazing. When you take your car in for anything, they give you another car to drive for that day.

Weakness:

It could use a little more power.

Probably the best midsize SUV made.

Unbelivable ride, build quality, great buttons, Auto 4WD mode for slick rodes(can change in 1% increments power to the front wheels when losing traction), 4 year /60000 mile warranty, red carpet service from dealers, loaner cars for scheduled maintaince, interior design

Weakness:

Power, the 2000 have only 170 HP, 2001's have 70 more. Gas Mileage 15 city/19 hwy ,

Got a good deal on it(new vehicle):
1) Waited for dealer cash back of $3000 to get it
2) Got it on part of a company buy program for new cars(600 below invoice)

Paid about $30,417.00 for it, unbelievable buy for the quality of vehicle I got. I have a big smile on my face
every time I start the QX4.

For anyone looking for a great SUV bargain in the luxury market, (sticker of 35,550), excellent build quality, great service, nice warranty, and a sold ride check out this vehicle.
