Trooper S
Strength:
Very roomy, comfortable to drive, reliable and it looks good. I also like the 70/30 rear door better than full swing or the kind that lift up.
Weakness:
Gas mileage is not as good as I would like, definitely could use some extra horsepower, the high profile makes parking garages a challenge at times. No factory roof racks, I had to have Yakima tracks installed. I would say that after 2 years, I would buy another one. The only mechanical problem I've had is the muffler needed to be replaced, it turns out there was a factory recall but Isuzu did not notify me... I took it into the dealer on my own because of the noise. I would recomend you get the options (leather, CD, etc.), I don't have all of them and kind of wish that I did. The gas mileage is not as good as I would like, but that's the price of having a large vehicle. I bought mine preowned, check out one of the many online sites for blue book values. |

Strength:
I REALLY LIKE THE HIGH SEATING POSITION. PLENTY OF CARGO ROOM,DECENT POWER(V-8 WOULD BE COOL). BOXY STYLING LOOKS GOOD ON THIS TRUCK.
Weakness:
I FEEL AS IF I AM TOO CLOSE TO THE STEERING WHEEL EVEN WITH THE SEAT ALL THE WAY BACK. THE RIDE IS A BIT SOFT FOR ME. HIGHER GROUND CLEARANCE MIGHT BE NICE. 4RUNNER HAS 11 INCH CLEARENCE. GREAT VALUE. I GOT MINE FOR ABOUT $23,000. IT WAS TIME TO GET RID OF MY 300ZX AND I WANTED SOMETHING BIGGER, TOUGHER AND WITH A HIGHER RIDE SO I LOOKED AT TRUCKS WITH GOOD OFF ROAD PERFORMANCE. DURANGO WAS A LITTLE TOO BIG AND EXPENSIVE, XTERRA WAS A BIT SMALL AND WAY UNDER POWERED(IT SEEMS TO ME THAT JAPANESE SUV'S COULD USE STRONER ENGINES) AND 4RUNNER WAS TOO EXPENSIVE AND SLIGHTY UNDER POWERED AS WELL. SO IT CAME DOWN TO THE TROOPER AND RODEO. THE ONLY REAL THING ABOUT TROOPER THAT BOTHERED ME WAS THAT I COULD NOT SLIDE THE SEAT BACK AS FAR AS I COULD IN THE RODEO. BUT, THE LARGER SIZE AND HIGHER SEATING POSITION OF THE TROOPER WON OUT. I WOULD MAKE THE SAME CHOICE NOW SIX MONTHS LATER AS I DID BEFORE. THE TROOPER Similar Products Used: XTERRA AND RODEO |

Trooper II
Strength:
It just won't die! The little 4 cylinder just keeps running after 140,000 miles. I've had it for 9 years. I have yet to replace any U-joints. Just shocks and a clutch.
Weakness:
Auto locking hubs. Caused too much tension on the front hub thrust washers and became noisy. They didnt work well when the temp dropped into the teens. I installed manual hubs, no problems now, I can shift in and out of 4WD on the fly. Great all around little rig. I'm looking for another Trooper to replace this one, would like a 4-door this time. I'ts a perfect rig for someone who lives off the pavement but still has to commute to town everyday. With the Webber carb, it gets about 17 mpg on the highway. About 15 in town or on the dirt. Similar Products Used: Ford F250- used to do alot of serious off road stuff. I like the smoother ride and tighter turning now. |

Strength:
Head room, overall room and especially the cargo room in the back. it can hold all my friends and more. Interior is indestructable. it has held up and i still looking new after 8 years. The 3.2L V6 engine has good get up and go and is good for those trips up to the mountain.
Weakness:
It is pretty tall. Easier to roll than most other SUV's. But hey, you just dont drive stupid enough to roll your car.... right!?! This is a great reliable that can hold its own. Good mountain going vehicle, 4wd and all. I paid 8,500 for my 8 year old Trooper, and that was the best decision i have made in car buying so far. Great Car! Strength:
Built like a tank, 7 years running and not a single squeal or rattle (I live in the tropics!). 4WD is like pigs in the mud. Love it.
Weakness:
Slighly underpowered (Hey, I got the 2 door version, not available in US, with the 2.6 liter four banger) The best SUV you can get. Not as fancy or a plush as other SUV from japan or US, but if you are in serious 4 wheeling and still want a confortable, reliable, trouble free family car, this is the one to get. Strength:
Vast interior space in a modest sized vehicle. Superb visibility makes you a safer driver. Skid plates are standard (yes it's supposed to go off road) and the spare is where you can get to it if you get a flat on soft ground.
Weakness:
The 93 only had 175hp, but the new ones have 215. Fuel consumption is only about 13mpg around town, 16mpg on trips. Maybe it could use some cupholders . The dealer network could be a problem. There is nothing like it. The back seat easily accomodates three grownups in comfort. The tiny turning radius (for an SUV) allows you to manuever like a Miata. The seat backs in the rear are high enough (unlike Explorer, Blazer, Cherokee) to protect your passengers in the event of a rear end accident. There is plenty of head and foot room (unlike the Explorer and Blazer) Even without folding the back seats, there is more cargo space than ANY other midsize SUV. With the back seat folded, there is over 90 cu ft of space back there. (we're talkin full size Tahoe kinda space here..) The barn doors in the back are great for those of us who hit our heads on the flip up (ala Explorer) tailgates. They are oriented correctly for loading from the curb. On long trips you can motor all day , up and down hill at 75mph+, and never break a sweat. (try that in the Blazer.... I did and it died every time going up a hill) Similar Products Used: Ford Explorer, Chevy Blaser, Jeep Cherokee |

Strength:
Plenty of space for cargo and passangers. Ride and handling. Looks. Top notch build quality. Honest to goodness off-road capability.
Weakness:
2 hands required to close rear door (one to disengage the locking mechanism and the other to close the door). After years of shopping for and owning several SUVs, I finally found bliss with my Trooper. See strengths above. I ablsolutely love my Trooper. It just recently turned 100,000 miles and still no mechanical problems. The vechicle is still as solid as the day it read 100 miles. The only squeak I get is from the rear door after it got bent in CO while off roading with 3 bikes strapped to the spare tire. I now have roof mounted bike racks along with a 50"x60" alum. luggage basket. Don't believe what CR had said about the Trooper's handling. Sure, the stock shocks are pretty soft but it never felt tippy. I did an emergency manuver similar to the one they did and it handled great. I swerved around a black lab at 60 mi/hr in CO with 5 people inside and 3 bikes and 200lbs of gear on the roof. Didn't even slide. Those guys are a bunch of idiots when it comes to cars. Every automotive publication has said that there is nothing wrong with the Trooper's handling and that is all these guys do. They don't test washing machines and tv's and then claim they know cars. Anyway, enough about that. The Trooper is by far the best SUV on the market. Its ride is on par with those jacked up cars from Lexus and Mercedes and can take all the abuse you can throw at it. Strength:
100% Reliable/ Fast/ Quiet/ Great Handling
Weakness:
Seats My family and I drive a 1998 Trooper. We have owned it for a year and a half. Since we drove it off the lot I have not had one single problem from bumper to bumper! It's fast, quiet, well handling and great looking. Although I have 3 kids I still do alot of outdoor activeties like hunting and 4 wheeling. Let me say some of the places I travel to in Colorado are rough to say the least, but this Trooper has had no problems off road to speak of. If you are in the SUV market, before you buy ANYTHING else just give the Trooper a test drive. You'll be smiling the first time you hit 65!! |

Jackaroo SE (Trooper LS)
Strength:
Room, comfort, visibility, power, braking system and value for money. Great for families, especially those 3 kids and up. We have 3 and we can take some friends along as well!
Weakness:
mileage, undefined rattles, parts pricing (have an operating lease so I feel the part pricing in my lease figures - had a 1996 LS that blew a clutch - I left the car at the dealership and traded it "as is" on this one), tinny sound system, "old look" dashboard As value for money it cannot be beaten in this market down here. It is approx 15% cheaper than the competition. It is also superior in ride, room and drivability. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Trooper. I am replacing this one in June which will be about 2 months after the 2001 model is released in Australia and let me tell you I cannot wait!! Similar Products Used: My kids (I have 3) tell me that this is the most comfortable SUV compared to similar sized offerings from mitsubishi, toyota, nissan and ford (model names are all different down here apart from the ford explorer)and as we dive fair distances (just completed a 6000 mile round trip Melbourne to Perth across the Nullarbor) it is important they are comfortable. |
