Strength:

-Drivetrain
-Definitely the 4.0 I-6!! Very nice!
-Sporty wheels!
-Nice rugged vehicle, attracts the females to four-wheeling! THEY LOVE THE WOODS!!

Weakness:

-Road-noise, but not so bad if you have a nice stereo!
-High profile windshield, expect to replace them due to rocks.
-Welded door hinges, don't let the wind catch them!
-Thats it, not bad for a production model dating back to 84!

It has to be the BEST 4x4 for the money yet! I can't believe that Chrysler is dropping the Cherokee line! THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS! I have never had any problems with my Cherokee sport, besides the fact that an EX-girlfriend backed into it at a party! Notice the ex part. Thats the only thing that has ever been imperfect about my Jeep. I LOVE THAT JEEP! Anyways, if you or anyone you know is looking for a moderately priced, dependable, rugged yet sporty, slick road-handling four by four. Then I would highly suggest the Jeep Cherokee. The wrangler is nice, but it's dangerous above 45 miles an hour. And the Grand Cherokee is nice, but too plush and expensive. Too much plastic and leather:P And this new liberty, what a piece. CHEROKEE ALL THE WAY MAN!!

-Blazer...dont even get me started on those unreliable pieces of #@$%!
-4 Runner... can you say "foreign"!!

-Did I miss anything?

Strength:

Good 4WD. Very good engine. Just hit 221,000. It's on it's last leg now though.

Weakness:

Chryslers defective parts!!! ABS system is defective and malfunctions as well. Vehicle suddenly accelerates due to defective Throttle position sensor. Very poor fuel economy. Everything on car is going to break, but that engine is gonna keep running!

This car is a piece of junk. (except the engine & transmission)

Strength:

Reliability, power, comfort.

Weakness:

lack of passenger room.

I am very happy with my Cherokee Classic. I have had it since April '99 and have driven it every day since. Most have been highway miles. It has 85,000 miles on it now and the only things I have had to fix were the U-Joints in the front end.. And that was because I haven't been greasing them.. Other than that, everything has been regular maintenance. I am pretty happy with the gas mileage. It gets about 22 MPG on average and I drive it pretty hard. If I drive it carefully, I can get it up around 26 MPG. Probably the only complaint I have about it is the lack of passenger room in the back seat. But I don't have to ride back there so I don't really care...

Strength:

Great under body for 4-wheeling, just about everything is recessed, even the break lines--not like some trucks, (i.e., Yukon, Tahoe, CRV, RAV4) where there is so much stuff haning down that I would be afraid to go off roading in it. Great clearence, powerful as hell, I can't believe there is only a 6 cylander in there. I could go on and on.

Weakness:

Unfortunately there are some weekness. The speakers suck, but then again most factory speakers do. The back seat is kind of tight for a big man to get into. I don't like that you can not open the lift gate any other way than through the key hole. The spare tire provided is worthless. All of these things are minor to me and easily fixed.

Lets start off with I would never buy anything else. I have now been converted to a Jeep man. Its no wonder, you can beat the ever living out of these things and get back on the highway and feel like you never went off-roading. My Jeep has been very dependable and easily upgradeable with factory equipment that dresses it up nice. I have driven up mountains in this thing, through streams, and over just about anything and have damaged nothing. However, I highly recommend putting on all three skid plates if you want to go anywhere without fear. Tow hooks are also a good idea. I also have a Reese hitch and with the gas tank skid plate, this combination makes the back end bullet proof. Jeep is #1 in my book and very dependable, I have hauled wood, pulled out my wifes car in the winter, never have been stuck, and pulled my wifes car 1100 miles across the country and had no problems. Dam good truck.

I-6 PowerTech Engine and the Aisin/Warner Transmission.

Weakness:

Original Paint, Driver's Seat Adjustments (not enough),

Purchased from parent's for $1.00, who bought it new in '87. 250K on the clock now. Dad rebuilt the engine at 227K in 8/00, only because the oil pressure at idle was nonexistant! He installed new rings, bearings, and seals, and will soon rebuild Mom's '95 for the same reason. Recently drained/refilled the tranny, cleaned the rusty servos, and changed the internal filter, which fixed a rough upshift problem. The I-6 is indeed "bulletproof" with it's iron head/block! With new tires, shocks, exhaust, and transmission radiator, I hope to go at least another 100K. Only problems to date: crappy paint (repainted 9/00), faulty heater core (covered under warranty early on), and a ruptured transmission radiator. Long live the "Cherokee Nation!"

Power, rugged looks, great in the snow,...

Weakness:

Rear differntial is shot at 80,000 miles ($1,000 to fix); Air conditioning doesn't work anymore ($1,000 to fix); Blinker switch broke ($150 to fix); Fog lights filled w/ water & broke ($200 to fix); Leather steering wheel turned crappy (fixed for free inder warranty)

I love it when I'm not paying for repairs. It's powerful, it looks good (inside and out), and chicks dig it. But the weaknesses (see above) are annoying. That $1,000 rear differntial problem is killing me!!!

I was thinking about a new Jeep Liberty, but they look kinda gay; it's too much of a cute-ute. Too bad they didn't make them more rugged looking... I'd get one tomorrow.

Model Reviewed: Limited & Laredo

Strength:

Timeless, Rugged, Square & Faceted, no-nonsense Good looks. 4.0 litre puts out a couple hundred horses and MOVES with authority. 4WD is rugged and will get you there offroad. Low roof height AND high undercarriage clearance AND low center-of-gravity. Reasonably good overall value (from a used car perspective). Roof rack versatile, easy to use, and reliable under normal loads, suspension is extra tough.

Weakness:

no rear head rests, exhaust manifold needs replacement after 70k miles (tubular steel construction), some parts only available from dealer & expensive (i.e.: reverse light switch = $270, porcelain fuel injectors = $85.00 each x 6 cylinders - best if all are replaced when the first one goes.

Bought my first Cherokee 4 years ago. It was fully loaded and had an electric sunroof. When I bought it it had 160,000 miles on it, but ran like nothing else I ever had. The 4 litre straight 6 was so powerful that the front end would seem to lift up off the line, and it responded with instant accelleration in any gear. The sunroof was reliable and had no leaks. The ride was truck-like, except that the Cherokee's handling responded well for a SUV. Ceiling console was very cool, and had a digital compass (which saved me a few times) and thermometer. When my first Cherokee (Laredo) reached 185,000 miles it was stolen and recovered 5 days later. It ran so well, that the thieves (who were caught red-handed while stripping it) were pulling the engine and drivetrain for the black market. I also had an '87 Cherokee Limited at the time, and was fed up with the cost of restoring it that it was for sale. I only had liability insurance on the one that was stolen, so I felt that I had to keep the Limited and complete its resoration. I also ended up replacing my 1990 Laredo with another '90 Laredo. Unfortunately, the one I found dodn't have a sunroof, but it turned out to be the best one I ever had. I recommend Cherokees to anyone looking for a SUV that won't cost too much, but will do well anything asked of a SUV. Unfortunately, now I have to sell both our Cherokees because our family is outgrowing them. Hopefully, I'll find similar reliability in the minivan I end up buying.

Similar Products Used:

hate comparing other SUVs to Cherokees. The first 4-door Cherokees popularized the SUV in the 1980's. Before that, 2-door SUV models had very modest popularity. Refuse to compare to S10 Blazer, Jimmy, Dodges or any of the others except that they all burn gas and have 4 wheels.
