Strength:

4.0 engine from heaven, low center of grav., plenty of room for anything(subs, amp, dog, etc), decent ride, great off-roader, looks like an SUV should(powerful and athletic), turning radius, OK ride for a true SUV, too much to list.

Weakness:

Loud wind noise above 50MPH(just turn radio up), rear doors are a little small

I have only had my Cherokee for 6 months, but I've fallen in love w/ it. Great power and torque. Excellent acceleration for an SUV. This is my second car(1st was a TERRIBLE Taurus), and I'll never get another vehicle. Great for off-road and in-town driving. POWERFUL!!
It's a shame that the bean counters at Jeep are dropping the Cherokee in favor of the weak Liberty.
The Cherokee is a great vehicle for anyone who wants a rugged, powerful, roomy, good-looking SUV and doesn't want to spend $60000 for a Range Rover. GREAT CAR!!!

My 1994 Jeep was totaled due to the fact that a 1994 Grande Cherokee was jealous of the excellent shape and performance that my Cherokee was in. It’s a big bother thing. Seriously I was rear end at 40 mph by a 17 year old and the Jeep was totaled. What a shame! A great vehicle! Strong performer great engine and was always the choice when 3 or more people where going together. Can fly up the Colorado I-70 mountain highway at 85 mph or more. Never fails in 4wd situations. Goes were other 4wdrives fail to go.

Strength:

The 4x4 Cherokee is a rugged machine. Its a true go-anywhere vehicle that can handle long rides on terrain rough enough to knock the engine mounts off a japanese SUV with-out breaking a sweat.

Weakness:

The 4 cyl gets wound out on the freeway, by the time you hit 75+ mph you are pushing the limits of the safe RPMs on the engine. However, I've driven the 6 cyl version which gives more power then you'll ever need. Also, it could benifit from a 4+ speed trans over its 3 speed auto.

My 2dr 4x4 Cherokee is pushing 230,000 miles and is still going strong (thanks to some engine and trans work). I love this car, it just suites my personality perfectly. She rolled off the line in 1986 with all the cool toys and accessories availible at the time and most them are still in perfect working order. I have taken her up to the back woods of Big Bear many times with out problems. Currently, I'm woking on increasing her horse power (her achilies heal is her weak 4 cyl). I don't know how I will ever bring myself to sell her.

Strength:

The engine is powerful, sounds awesome climbing through the rev range, and is smooth. The exterior styling. I love the way it looks. The interior versatility. I like having room for 5 and a lot of luggage space to boot. The off-road talent. It is not a poser-SUV. Don't be afraid of driving over anything. It's hard as a rock on the outside.

Weakness:

The ride is like a truck, because it is a truck. It's reasonably comfortable as one, though. The wind noise is a bit much at highway speeds. The transmission is strange. Both of my Cherokees grind into reverse, which is solved by shifting into a forward gear immediately before reverse. Electrical problems. The fewer the options, the less to worry about down the road.

The Cherokee is a wonderfully versatile machine. It is comfortable as a daily driver, has the storage space to move large items (sectional couches, beds, 700lbs of metal), and can drive in the wild. The 4.0L In-line 6 cylinder is a beautiful engine. It is responsive and powerful in two or four wheel drive. The truck jumps off the pavement and frolicks like a puppy and then takes you home with a smile on your face. I bought one, then I bought another, and if I don't keep this one forever, I'll buy another one.
My two reviews:
The 1988 Cherokee Laredo, Black, 4x4, 4 Door, 4.0L I-6, 5 speed manual.
This was my first vehicle, bought at age 18. I bought it because I wanted a versatile vehicle, and this was the best looking one. I was the 4th or 5th owner of this Cherokee, and it had 117k miles on it when I bought it for $3,000.
I think it went through so many people because it had electrical problems. The previous owner had tried to play doctor on it and there were clippings of wire on the carpet when I bought it. Lots of items were messed with. The driver's side window would stick down when it was rolled into the door frame completely, and various window switches intermittently failed, as did door locks. I had a major problem with the transmission (a peugot, though stock tranny) involving a banging noise. It required a full rebuild ($2,000). The peugot tranny is to be avoided, as it is extrememly expensive to replace parts, or as a whole. Get another transmission.

This truck was originally purchased by a serious outdoorsman who slid it down a hill into a tree, denting the right front quarter-panel. This outdoorsman also was responsible for shooting the Jeep inadvertantly. As mentioned, the Cherokee is hard as a rock. The rifle bullet bounced off - only minor cosmetic damage. Regardless, the truck drove well, the guages were great (tachometer, gas guage, volt meter, oil pressure guage, temp. guage), and it was fun to drive on-road (peppy beast through first 3 gears) and off road - I took advantage of the 4x4 whenever I had the chance.
Considering its off-road abilities - I once hydroplaned off an oil-slicked road in a fresh rain, was stopped by the force of a ditch, some brush, and a tree. An explorer driver saw it happen, stopped to see if I needed help. I said "hold on a sec, I'm gonna try something." I put it in 4 wheel low in this watery, muddy ditch and backed right up onto the road, and then within a minute had hauled another unfortunate drive out of the same mess.
The Jeep incurred no damage from this event, nor any event while in my posession. It's a tough vehicle.
Eventually, at around 160,000 miles the electrical problems brought about the Cherokee's demise in the form of an electrical fire in the engine compartment. It was a small, quickly contained fire, but it did too much damage to fix economically. The engine ran flawlessly up to it's last day. I teared up losing this Cherokee.
Swapping off the aftermarket tubular front bumper, 10-spoke steel wheels, tow hitch, and shifter knob (sentimental reasons), I began life with my second vehicle.

Surprise! It was another black, 4 door, 4x4, 4.0L I-6, 5 speed manual Cherokee, this time a 1996 base model with 115,000 miles on it for $5,000. Why did I buy another one? I couldn't get enough of the first one. It was great. I couldn't find a reason to buy another vehicle. They weren't good enough. This engine is even more powerful, there are no electrical problems, and the transmission is not a peugot.
Aside from the former owner screwing an audio amplifier into the gas tank and leaving a leak to fix, this Cherokee has had no problems. The engine sounds great, runs great, and vibrates so little it's difficult to see it's on when you're looking at it. This is a solid performer and looks great. I only wish I had a tachometer, because of how much fun I have on-road with this engine. Buying any vehicle without giving a Cherokee a look is a mistake.

I've driven cars and vans, but no trucks to compare it to. The Cherokee is a perfect blend of what I want: Good on-road manners, room for 5, great off-road capability, and enclosed storage for lots of stuff.

4.0 Engine, 4WD, comftorable, ride, gas milage isn't bad 17/21

Weakness:

interior noise, my front end leaks from every seal, tranny mount and engine mounts are both gone!! but with that many miles I should excpect that kinda of stuff.

I love my Jeep. It has almost 1/4million miles and it still has plenty of sack. I have 10inch wide street tires on it and it will spin those any day of the week. It rides fairly nice, but like everyone says the interior noise does get annoying. Handles damn good for an SUV. off road there is nothing like it. But the leaf springs are weak I already busted a pair on some minor trails. Other than that I love it.

Strength:

Of course the engine. I bought the thing with 110k and it runs like new. Great looking body style but I guess Jeep knows that they haven't changed in about 17 years.

Weakness:

Very little to list here. I guess wind and road noise but I like it lets you know your driving a real truck.

I did alot of research before buying this Cherokee, about 5 months of searching for the right one (got this one for a steal). For a 12 year old truck the thing runs great and just about everything works. I recommend you do your research and find one that has been taken care of and get the 4.0. Its not hard to find one cheap in great shape.

Off road capabilities, powerful engine, rugged good looks, durable

Weakness:

Wind noise at high speeds (I don't really mind though...turn the radio up a bit and you won't even notice)

Only the water pump had to be replaced and it has over 125,000 miles on it. I can go where ever I want, whenever I want without worrying about anything breaking. Overall a very good car and an excellent off road machine at a wonderful price.
