WE HAVE HAD A GREAT EXPERIENCE WITH OUR JEEP. IT HAS PROVEN TO BE VERY OFF ROAD CAPABLE AND RELIABLE. SURE ITS A LITTLE OUT DATED AND IT MAY NOT HAVE SOME OF THOSE COMFORT FEATURES AND SMOOTH CAR-LIKE RIDE LIKE SOME OF THE OTHER POPULAR SPORT UTES BUT AFTER ALL ITS A SPORT UTILITY VEHICLE NOT A CAR! THIS IS A TRUE AND VERY SOLID SUV.

Strength:

Huge fun to drive anywhere
Surprisingly good on-road (for an SUV)
Outstanding off-road
Supremely comfortable (8 hours non-stop - no problems)
Reliable
Tough
Looks great (in these days of jelly-mould blob-mobiles and cute-utes)
Burns off GTIs at the lights, much to their surprise

Weakness:

Burns petrol (especially at our fuel prices, about $1 a litre)
Not particularly spacious - back seat is pretty poor - fine for kids, grim for adults
Accelerates well, but struggles up hills

I paid a little too much for this, but I justified it with the comprehensive warranty. Turns out, it wasn't worth the paper it was printed on. I didn't read the small print closely enough and missed my service interval. They refused to do any work on it, so I've had dodgy central locking and leaky air-con for 3 years - but I've gotten used to that.

Within a week of owning it, I had a coming together with a Nissan Sunny loaded with teenagers. Blind bend on a forest track, I saw 'em coming and stopped - they didn't see me and plowed into the front at over 30 mph. They were all OK, but their Nissan was a written-off crumpled wreck. I would have driven away fine if it weren't for a punctured radiator. After this I realised how tough this Jeep was - a pleasant thought when considering my new-born daughter.

I fitted a 3" Rubicon Express lift and 30" BFG MTs - the difference is incredible. Off-road it's virtually unstoppable - I haven't got stuck once since fitting them, and I have tried! On-road the RE suspension makes for a much stiffer ride - handling is superb and it corners brilliantly, but the ride quality is quite poor. The MT tyres can be a bit of a handful on wet tarmac in 2WD, but in 4WD there's no problem.

It's been pretty much faultless for the entire time I've had it. Not one problem, other than self-inflicted damage, which so far includes bent and ripped exhaust, exploding transfer case, sheared UJs, dented petrol tank, and numerous small dings and scratches. All these are a result of over ambitious off-road exploits, so I have no complaints against the vehicle - just my own carelessness.

One other benefit is the intimidation factor - not scaring people so much as making them aware of you. With the lift and tyres this beast stands about 5" taller than standard, and I painted the front diff and steering rack bright yellow. When people see my Jeep behind them, they get out of my way - great for dealing with middle-lane morons and weaving, dawdling Sunday drivers.

I was planning to keep my Cherokee as long as I could, but since I'm now leaving Britain and can't take it with me, I have to say goodbye. I am heart-broken.

Model Reviewed: Cherokee 4X4 Sport 4dr

Strength:

REAL offroad capability -- good engine, drivetrain, 4X4 system and performance, classic styling.

Weakness:

Rear seats a little cramped, rear doors too narrow, transmission 1-2 downshift at hard acceleration is annoying, less than satisfactory fuel consumption (as with any SUV).

The Cherokee is the Harley Davidson of SUV's....it has some shortcomings, but you wouldn't change them because it is part of the vehicle's character and personality. Those who REALLY DO use 4WD will not be disappointed as the Cherokee is the SUV that all others are compared to. The styling is a timeless masterpiece. Proper attention to regular maintenance will result in a driving experience that will last a LONG time and produce excellent value for the money.

Strength:

Drivetrain--great power & proven reliability--goes through anything, including Green Bay winters.
Value--for $21,000 it includes the I6, air, tilt, power windows & locks, etc.
Fuel economy--I average around 18.5 regardless of city/highway
safey--Cherokees have done well in crash tests

Weakness:

could be more refined--i.e. wind noise, road noise, etc.
rear doors aren't the easiest to get in & out of (not a big deal for me since I'm driving)
BIGGEST WEAKNESS--I CAN'T GET AWAY WITH THE "I'M SNOWED IN" EXCUSE WHEN I DON'T WANT TO GO TO WORK

Excellent vehicle overall. The Cherokee Sport may not have all the ammenities of some, but it what it lacks in niceties, it more than makes up for where it counts--real world performance. Engine & drivetrain are a little coarse, but bullet-proof. The acceleration compared to other suv's in its class is excellent. I've put on close to 30,000 miles in about 1 1/2 years & can honestly say this is the most satisfied I've ever been with a vehicle. Wind & road noise was a bit loud on the highway, but some sound deadening in the doors (while installing an aftermarket cd player) helped quite a bit.

Blazer--seemed decent when I test drove, but I have a horrible history w/GM products. Also--Blazer has no low transfer case for 4wd--a very big deal for anyone who actually goes off road

Strength:

Roomy, priced fairly, quick, safe, what else do you need in an SUV?

Weakness:

I also do sound modifications and lighting effects. The sport has been horrible in this department as far as installation, nothing is the right size or ever compatible. I have had to do many custom jobs that would have been avoided with a more universal design of the interior and wiring.

Overall: The 4dr 4.0 high out put in-line V-6 is a best buy in a conservative sport utility vehicle. The Vehicle is lightweight within it class and picks up great from a stand still, especially by comparison to other SUV's. Took the liberty of putting a Jackson Supercharger under the hood so off the line, there are very few sports utility vehicles that are going to beat me to 60 mph (V8 laredo compares as well as the BMW X5, both from factory modifications only). Lots of cargo room when the seats are dropped, full sized spare as yet to be a cargo issue. Got into a car accident, a toyota Avalon clipped the rear driver side door, had I not seen the car in my mirror I would have thought I hit a speed bump. The suspension completely absorbed a large portion of the impact. I LOVE IT!

Had the 95 Laredo, which of course looks better than the sport, however the sport is lighter in weight and I think the sport has better handle, control, and pick-up.

First of all, I bought my Jeep @ Continental in Countryside in IL. The Sales manager at Elmhurst Jeep was very personal and rude when I tried to negotiate some details. The folks at Continental were exceptionally pleasant. Between incentives and rebates I got a great deal and they were very up front about their pricing.
Okay, now on to the actual Jeep: One word - WOW. I love it. It is a smooth ride, for an SUV and the gas mileage does not seem to be that bad. I am a big guy and I fit well into the Jeep. I havent had the opportunity to try out the four wheel drive but I hear good things. I had to write this review because I love my new Cherokee. I read that the back seat is cramped but I beg to differ. I feel that there is plenty of room. Brakes, power, handling, everything is great.
I looked at a lot of the competition and to me there was NO competition. The Cherokee was the better choice between all of the different SUVs I looked at. Blazer, Passport, CRV, Xterra and Rodeo Sport were all subpar. As a side note, the sales manager at Honda of Lisle was also very rude and quoted me a lease price that was unrealistic and he refused to show me his numbers [illegal]. In addition, when I showed him my calculated numbers (always know your info), he insisted that I was wrong but could not clarify. He was either a huge con artist or too ignorant to calculate his own numbers. Luckily, I found Continental because I was able to buy the car I wanted at a great price.

4x4 was good while it worked, solid SUV, much better than the competition for the price, even new.

Weakness:

Usual problems for a used vehicle. Most people tend to abuse the 4x4's. Keep that in mind.

Ok, granted this was used, I'm doing my best to take this into consideration. This was a one owner car when we purchased it with 110,000 miles on it. Cosmetically, it was great. New paint, no dents, great wheels and tires. Had a full size spare with the same mag wheels on the tire holder on the back. Seemed a decent vehicle. However within 2 months of ownership, BOOM, a new transmission. (again, I know it was used). Later the transfer case went bad so we had no 4x4 capabilities. The front drive shafts CV joint went out, the A/C cost us $350 bucks, the radio went bad, reception for the radio sucked even with a Blaupunkt system in there. Lets see, the review mirror almost broke my wifes hand when if fell off the windshield, a spring popped off of the carberator coming back from Nebraska, reved that engine up pretty good!! VROOOOOOM!! There's other items, but minor. It was a good lemon while we had it.

Not a lot of positve comments about this vehicle
Maybe we just got a lemon!

Weakness:

Reliability poor; value has significantly declined; numerous repairs and ongoing problems; do not feel safe; can't wait to get rid of this vehicle

I have had a terrible experience with this vehicle. Will not recommend it or buy another. I had always heard that Jeep Cherokees were excellent vehicles; but discovered otherwise shortly after purchasing my Jeep Cherokee. Approximately 3 months after buying this new vehicle, the brakes went out. I was told this was a manufactoring defect and the dealership replaced them. The Jeep was put in the shop several other times with various problems, i.e rattling noises, belt replacements, etc... With slightly less than 50,000 miles the water pump blew on the outrskirts of Philadelphia, PA., leaving me stranded with my 5 year old and 2 month old daughters. When this occurred the radiator was also destroyed. ($980.00) Currently the heater does not work, the air conditioner does not work due to an evaporator coil leak ($600.00). The air bag light comes on sporadically ( had recall -device was supposedly fixed in accordance to recall). When the air bag light comes on the odometer, speedometer, and other gauges will drop to zero. This happens often and without warning. The gas gauge does not read accurately and left me again stranded twice. I now track the gas used by miles, because the gas gauge will read just below half a tank, but in actuality will be completely empty. Also the rear end slides when I make turns in the rain-indicate possible rear axle problems. The Jeep's current value is far below what the residual value is listed as, and the amount of repairs that have to be made are estimated at a minimum of two thousand dollars. This vehicle has been a nightmare for us. The jeep has approximately 70,000 miles and runs like it has well over a thousand. I have owned 8 other vehicles and have put up to 200,000
miles on them, none of which have had the problems I've had with this one. Currently trying to get out from under this monstrosity.
