Strength:

V8 - Very powerful, beats any SUV 0-60, Sound System, Ride

Weakness:

Gas Milage, handling past 65mph

Buy It! The 2001 Model looks even better than the 2000. The 4.7 V8 is awesome with a 0-60 in 7.6 sec. The Xterra is crap w/ a puny 3.3L, the 4Runner is a wannabe off-roader, the Explorer flips over :), NOTHING ELSE COMPARES!

Strength:

Size - maneuverability and handling are great
Power - with the standard V8, its a great performer
Bad weather handling - great in snow or wet roads; the most sure-footed vehicle I've ever owned.

Weakness:

Driver/ ergonomics (controls, etc. much of this has been changed in later years)
Not a lot of cargo space compared to other SUVs (but I knew it was a small car when I bought it)
Dealer support - right from the time of sale, dealers' snotty attitude was incredible. Service situations have been the same - at several dealers. They avoided addressing major complaints, which are now coming back to bite me now that the vehicle is out of warranty.
durability - expensive parts are giving out much too soon. At 115,000 miles I'm leaking oil, just took a replacement front axle, and the transmission is ready to go. The car is not abused or used in off-road conditions, but its falling apart and the economic sense of keeping it repaired and running is rapidly diminishing. This is the first car I've owned in years that didn't turn 200,000; I have to unload it.

The car is a great performer, and I've enjoyed the ride for 6 years. Right now I'm test driving SUVs and not even considering another Jeep. The price has become stupid for what is essentially a small car. Other vehicles give you more space for less money. If you want this car, lease it - don't buy it. The image of the durable Military-bred vehicle is a myth that has nothing to do with the current Jeep. You will want to unload it after 3 years.

Best offroad SUV on earth.
4-Coil suspension puts any other SUV ride to shame.
Solid front axle-Makes IFS look silly offroad
Inline 4 litre is very powerful & torquey
Its a JEEP!!!
Seats more comfortable than most living rooms
Handles like a dream (On and offroad)
Classic styling inside

Weakness:

Spare tire inside
Gas mileage

Hey let's face it, Jeep is an American legend. Every Jeep is tested on the Rubicon before it approved for production. Not a lot of frills, those are for your wife, but all the comforts put where you want them and easy to use. No giant knobs or buttons made of recycled pop bottles, like chevy. No weird 4WD with no low-range like Ford. No IFS, no push button 4WD, no joking around. I will recommend a Grand Cherokee to anyone. It works in the mud, on the rocks, in the sand, but it looks and feels great at the mall, on the highway, and at the 5-star steak house up the road. You can buy any offroad accessory you could want, I've got 33" BFG mudders on mine!!
No problems. Stops on a dime. Easy to get parts for. Jeep dealer in every city. Easy to work on yourself. More comfortable than first class.
Trust me, you'll be glad you did. Go ahead Start Up a Mountain.

The only thing you can even compare it to is a Land Rover, and I leave them on the trails wishing they could follow. Any SUV with an IFS will be begging you to pull them out. More comfortable than Explorer, Durango, 4Runner, Pathfinder. More powerful than 4Runner or Pathfinder. 4 litre competes with American v-8s off the line. If you four-wheel, camp, or anything outdoors, don't even consider anything, but a Grand Cherokee. Can you get a 6" lift for anything else? Check and then get back to me. If you decide on one of those other things, don't worry, eventually someone with a Jeep will be by to pull you out!!

Strength:

Ergonmics, ride quality, Quadra drive, quick for a sport-ute. Rips through snow like nothing. Looks

Weakness:

Leather seats are only partially leather-- my vinyl started to crack. 45RFE transmission clunks when going slow-shifts great when you floor it. . . U-joint was replaced at 4,000 miles and has been fine since.

99' GC Limited V8 with Quadra drive. 27000 miles after a year and half. OK mileage for a V8. Haven't had any problems with it after the u-joint issue. Great compromise vevicle: Drives like a car yet most of the benefits of a truck. Great in the snow! Sound system is great. Best of all you can beat an ML 430 off the line, say Aufidersein! All in all, driving this thing has been a pleasure, I hope it will hold up. As of rigth now, If I could choose all over again, I would still by the Jeep over anything else out there.

*Cuts thro the snow
*Seats 5 comfortably with lots of luggage space

Weakness:

*Viscous coupler went out @ 80K causing it to skip around corners; $900 later it was fine, but needed replacement again 20K later
*Rear lights corroded early
*Lost oil from day 1
*A ghost in the machine would rev it to 2K rpm when idling; dealerships couldn't figure it out

*ABS was defective on day 1
*Horrible gas mileage
*Depreciated from $24K to $7K @ trade-in in 6 years
*Brake rotor recall
*A/C problems which Chrysler never told me about; I found out about the recall by reading this website
*Too many rattles
*Rear seats would get locked into place - tough to free them to lift seats up
*Door lock remote had poor range & tabs broke off
*High cost/mile overall

*Too many defects for the high price
*Combined with all the other JGC horror stories I've heard, this is the 1st & last one I'd buy

Strength:

FULLY loaded. The image is nice (black with gold trim/rims) power is plenty. Little goodies Jeep stuffed in there.

Weakness:

Transmission sluggish shifting(normal, needs 45,000mi band adjustments), power steering box hissing at turn-lock (design flaw).

A great vehicle! I'm surprised at the number of persons not recommending them. Road wander is normal due to the advanced floating suspension design (front end "wanders" while driving off-road to find ruts for more traction, compromises road ride.) Transmission bands need to be adjusted at 45,000mi for upshift firmness. Differentials go bad easily from contaminated fluid.
With all that said, proper maintenance should be all that is needed. I love my Jeep. It has meet or exceeded all my expectations and I'll buy another when it's time to retire this one.

Strength:

I love the power. Nothing like dusting other cars. Not like my 5.0 mustang but still dang fast. Corners like a champ thanks to the unibody and all time 4 wheel drive. Plush interor compared to other SUVs. Did I mention power?

Weakness:

Gas milage is a big one. (15-19 mpg)There must be some wire loose in the back because when I go to Moab and sleep in the back the dang interor light comes on and off. Big pain when you are dog tired. Its way expencive if you want a lift over 3 inches.

I paid 11,000 for it in 99'. I feel that I got a good price. And would recomend it if you dont pull anything or need the power for off roading my friend likes his Grand with the I-6. V-8 for me please. I plan doing more to it with after market parts. But while in college I just dream. I was thinking of selling it. Thats why I came here to hear about other experences with other suv's. Everything else around the same price is not even worth looking at. The saying holds true There is only one Jeep. Oh yeah girls love it too.

Strength:

EVERYTHING!!! This vehicle is the MOST powerful SUV that I have ever driven!

Weakness:

Nothing. (Yet!)

I would definately recommend it to anyone that can afford it. The Grand Cherokee is the MOST dynamic SUV on the market today. I do understand that many people have had problems with them, but keep in mind that DaimlerChrysler took over during the 1999 vehicle upgrade and it ALWAYS takes some time to fix the bugs. Jeep has definately done that and the proof of that is the 2001 Grand Cherokee. If you can afford it, go with the Limited/V-8. You will NOT be disappointed!

Strength:

excellent road manners, great in rough weather, decent fuel mileage considering its weight, fair amount of space, and an excellent value considering its pre-owned market.

Weakness:

the transmission is the weak link. Otherwise it's been bullet proof.

These are the best priced pre-owned SUV's on the market! They may not be perfect, but millions of postal employees can't be wrong!
