Strength:

Comfortable
Looks good
egronomic, well designed interior
Good handling and stability
Low noise (considering its size)
Enough power (4.0)
Good transfer case (SelecTrac)

Weakness:

-some components very unreliable
-expensive to maintain
-rear brakes are poor (drums, '93 Laredo)
-for a 4.0 the horsepower could be much higher
-rear passenger area a bit small given overall size

I was fortunate to come accross this "cherry out of the lemons" of a Jeep. It has most of the options (inc leather interior etc) despite being a 'Laredo' with silver trim (NO hideous gold trim anywhere).
I bought the Jeep last year at 101k miles, now at 111k. So far, it has had a few problems but nothing huge. Repair costs vary wildly depending on the area you live in....
-All the electrical system have been flawless
-brakes are nowhere near as good as those on the Ltd and later models w/ discs all-round.
-the engine is completely shagged, which is suprising given the mileage. I would expect it to last longer.
-accelerates very well, but it is not a fast car
-body and interior are immaculate. It all feels solid. no vibrations.
-much quieter on the highway than other trucks like the Cherokee. It is very aerodynamic for a truck this size & vintage (compare windshield slope to early Explorers)
-SelecTrac is a good old-fashionned transfer case and works well. Having full-time 4X4 on-hand is great and running in 2WD on normal roads is an advantage.

I enjoy driving the Jeep very much. It makes the costly repairs seem almost worthwhile. Unfortunately '93 was the first model-year of this vehicle, and so the '93s are known to be unreliable. Here are things to watch out for:
-Air conditionner
-Ignition switch (!) the part no. for cars after 2/93 is different!
-serpentine belt drive pulley (fell off the crankshaft)
-REAR AXLE LEAK. What was a slow leak was exacerbated by pulling a heavy trailor, but if it had not been found, the diff woudl have been wrecked. Same exact problem happenned on my parents' British '93 Cherokee.
-shoddy Jeep dealers

Overall a good car at a resonable price. Fantastic off-road and in snow, and great for long road trips. Just choose your used Jeep very carefully and find a good dealer. I wouldn't recommend anything older than '95 due to reliability (look at the KBB figures). Remember to budget for those surprise problems & repairs (i.e. if you can barely afford the sticker price, you can't afford it).

Strength:

The best part about my Grand Cherokee is the 5.2 liter V8. The engine provides more than enough power, although Im about to upgrade it for more. The exterior is awsome looking, and the interior has lots of cool toys and slightly useful gadgets. Have owned for a year now and have had no problems other than the tailight going out. Very comftorable and smooth riding.

Weakness:

The computer system is a little shotty, and gas milage is not all that great.

When I first bought the Jeep, I was suprised how well it stood up for 16,000 against my recently expired 21,000 4 Runner. So far it has been very reliable, and the 5.2 is very nice. The AC just recently went out and the computer chronically thinks that I have a brake light out even though I dont. The factory infinity gold sound system is nice, although I upgraded it. It is a very comftorble ride, the interior is very luxorious, while the outside has a classic Jeep rugedness. I have had an opportunity to take my Jeep off road and I must say that it performed to my every expectation, way out performing my friends Rodeo, a ford explorer V8 4 wheel drive, and even an F150. So far I have been extreamly pleased with my Jeep.

I think it looks sharp. Great for our two Golden Retrievers.

Weakness:

Brake problems from day one. Squeeked with 1000 miles on the vehicle. I brought it in for service and they turned the rotors. Continual problem with the squeeking, but of course nothing could be found wrong. Now the 36,000 mile warranty is up. They will probably find something wrong with the brakes now.
Noise coming from the rearend now. Again - warranty is over. I hope they honor it!!! I have an appt tomorrow.
Had a problem with the rear door latch... got fixed.
For the amount of money I paid, this Jeep has annoyed me. I fear that my rear end needs to be replaced???!!! Big bucks!!$$$$$$$$ I am not a happy Jeep owner. I USED to love Jeeps!

Based on my aggravation and reading others SAME problems, you would think Jeep would do something to get return customers, like recall the brakes and the rearend problems. It seems like most complaints are in this area.

I don't think I would buy another Jeep and it hurts me to say it. My experience with the mechanical problems have been too many. But, I still LOVE the look of a Jeep!!

Strength:

The 4.7 L V-8 is smooth and very powerful, I liked the previous motor 5.2 L, but the 4.7 is a big improvement. The Quadra Drive is amazing, that along with the solid axles, mean that I can go where others can't, and I go in style. The auto temp control AC works great, and the Infinity Gold sound system is awesome. I like the stling of the WJ (99-01) much better than the 93-98 (ZJ). The fit and finish were great, I have not had any problems with it at all. I of course do have all of the maintainence done on time.

Weakness:

The Goodyear tires are horrible off road, but I knew that from previous Jeeps. I drove straight from the dealer to have BFG AT tires put on. I also wish that they didn't have plastic bumpers, but that is because I take mine off road a few times a month.

I find that the Jeep is unequaled off road, comortable on. I wish that I got better mileage but then again it's a Jeep. I will bet you that all of the people on here that have ripped thier Jeep, have not been to a Jeep Jamboree (www.jeepjamboreeusa.com) Once you go you will never buy anything else.

If you want a real SUV buy a Jeep, if not buy a Mini-Van or Wagon.

I have owned a 93 Cherokee and 99 Wrangler. If someone is looking for a real sport utility you have two choices, Jeeps and Land Rovers. Explorers, Blazers. TrailBlazers, 4 Runners, Pathfinders, and Rodeos are not serious off raoders. The RX300 is a car, it is a camry not an suv.

Strength:

Basic design approach. The right size, handles and rides well, good space utilization, decent looks.

Weakness:

The original decision to produce the new Grand Cherokee's is its only weakness. This is my second installment. The first was written after 6 months with the car. In any reasonable definition of the term, this is not a car. As a mode of transporation its worthless. Its either in the shop or preparing itself for its next trip to the shop. The New York Times reviewer said he could not get comfortable in the car. An orthopedic told me all of his patients that own this car need a back support cushion and their left arm goes to sleep because of the arm rest. The steering wheel is in the wrong position, the seats offer no support and steering is vague and unresponsive. The car is too uncomfortable to take on a long trip. The build quality is pathetic (been in the shop over a dozen times, took 8 visits and 28,000 miles later to get the qudradrive working for the first time). Chrysler will treat you (yes, you the customer) with contempt. Malfunctions too numerous to mention in this limited space. The car is currently in Lemon Law arbitration and I have been told Chrysler will have to take back the car.

Stay away from these cars. If you must, buy 2WD and stripped so you have less to lose.

Tons of creature comforts
Memory seat (I'm 6'1 my wife is 5'4 - that comes in handy)

Comforatable (Drove it for 13 hours straight and didn't have car fatigue)

Weakness:

Could have a bigger back seat

This has been a great SUV and we have not had any problems. We recieved a great deal from CarMax and 2.9% for 5 years. If things happen that is what warranty is for.

We both love this car and the heated seats are great.

Strength:

It is a good looking tough vehicle. It goes anywhere I want to go including the mountain tops. I been to places that many others could not get their vehicles to go. I had to tow a Toyota P/U up to the top of the mountain so he could see it.

Weakness:

Lack of horsepower. I have the inline 6 and have always wanted more horsepower. Alarm quit working years ago. Have always had a computer indication that a rear light was burned out but it never is.

I have had this car for over 8 years, bought it in July 92. This has been the best, most durable car I have ever owned. I don't baby it a whole lot either. It has been off roading lots of times and on the mountain trails up to 12,000 feet.

I installed a 3" lift, 31 inch tires and a Warn winch. I now have 105,000 miles on it and it is beginning to show some wear. The interior looks brand new.

I was considering buying another one but am having second thoughts after reading these reviews. Makes me feel like I might have just gotten one of the good ones. I will miss this vehicle when it's gone.

Weakness:

gas mileage but it's a v8.

This is a very solid car overall for the price I paid. I bought it at Clair Motors in Boston, and received excellent service. This is my third Chrysler vehicle in 4 years, and I've never had a problem with them. The only problem I've experienced with this car, and others have mentioned it is that it was stalling occasionally. I took to the dealer, and they replaced the cam sensor (apparently this is a problem item on a number of JGC's). Clair gave me a replacement JGC while fixing the cam sensor, was repaired in one day. Haven't had any other problems with it since. Idle's a little rough, but it's not a Toyota or Honda, so I wouldn't expect it to be completely silent. I have the Patriot Blue, and have received many compliments on it. The leather interior is top notch, and the seat heaters have helped this winter. Overall, it's a great SUV for the money, and can't think of too many others that can compete with it for the price.

Styling, Power, Interior Amenities, Quadra-Drive, Transmission, Sound System. That seems to cover the whole vehicle.

Weakness:

Risk of reliability issues.

Rear leg room is not great, but I am never back there.

Opt for the stiffer suspension of the "up-country" package.

I generally dislike Chrysler given the poor experience I had with their service for a prior vehicle, but I could not resist the styling of the 2001 Grand Cherokee. To my pleasant surprise, however, the rest of the vehicle is up to par, so far.

Power is excellent, and the delivery to the road is flawless. Comfort was, obviously, the motivating factor when designing an automatic transmission with multiple second and overdrive gears. This is reflected in the shifting, which you must pay attention to if you want to notice it. More importantly, the Quadra-Drive is exceptional. Having just driven home in a snow storm that had most other vehicles crawling, it felt like this Jeep was on tracks. It does not squirm in the ugliest of conditions and it works without any user involvement.

Interior comfort and amenities are also outstanding. I almost enjoy getting stuck in traffic.

So far, so good. Hopefully none of the reliability issues that some others have been stricken with will affect me.

I love it. It really does the job as somethin you can drive to work or pack in the family to go to Grandma's House. It has the power a normal person needs and I can help my buddy move his couch. I thought I would like the toyota but this is a nicer ride. I highlly recomend a Jeep. The luggage is nice too.
