Strength:

Comfortable seats, great view of the road, snow? - no problem!

Weakness:

Gas mileage; expensive to maintain.

My 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee is comfortable, and when it's not in 4WD, it handles like a car. When the weather is bad, the 4WD is wonderful - I have driven on snowy streets without a problem (except when I try to stop!).

The height of the car gives me a commanding view of the road - since I am only 5'2", this is important to me. In my husband's Celica, I can barely see over the steering wheel. The adjustable lumbar support in the driver/passenger seat is a must for me - I have back problems, and this is the most comfortable car I have ridden in! This feature may not be included in later model years, though...

I have had one major problem in the 4 years that I have owned the car - the fuel pump went, but it was sporadic, so the dealer was unable to diagnose the problem until it failed completely. I must add, though, that the dealer was wonderful! They provided me with a loaner for a week while trying to diagnose the problem, and when it failed just as I had to take a bunch of folks to the airport, they gassed up a loaner and had it waiting for me (6 of us drove to the dealership in the Celica!). They were under no obligation whatsoever to do this, just great customer service!

All in all, I feel that the car is a good value - same price range as other SUVs that I considered, but much more comfortable! Who should own it? The short answer - anyone who wants 4WD and a commanding view of the road.

Strength:

Exterior styling is terrific. In May on 1999, it looked better than most other SUV's, and it still does.

Weakness:

Where do I start? My problems have been numerous for a new vehicle at its price level, fixed by the dealer on the first try in most cases, under warranty, but nevertheless problems.

My 99 Grand is a 2WD, 4.0L, 6 cyl., with 24,000 miles. My wife drives it on a daily basis to work. Since purchasing it in May of 1999, it has been in the shop at least 10 times. I have had the following problems and repairs:

1. Engine valves pinging - no help from the service department. The advice was not to use cheap gas, and they even made a suggestion on which name brand gas not to use. Premium gas seems to help the problem.
2. AC stopped working at 5,000 miles for one full day and for no apparent reason. Service department couldn't reproduce the problem.
3. Transmission linkage adjusted at 7,000 miles. It used to clunk in reverse and while stopping and starting. Fixed by the service department under warranty.
4. Luggage rack replaced. It warped at 10,000 miles. Fixed by the service department under warranty.
5. Recall on front seatbelts. Fixed by the service department as part of a recall.
6. Passenger side front window regulator went out. Fixed by the service department under warranty.
7. Vehicle became very difficult to start at 20,000 miles. It began taking several tries to several minutes to start some mornings, after driving short periods, or after driving long periods. The service department classified it as an intermittent problem. After several trips to the shop, I had a very straight forward discussion with the service manager. By the way, my wife began to complain about the problem. At that point, I knew something was wrong. I had decided not to take no for an answer, and I demanded that a new fuel pump be put on the vehicle. The problem seems to have been fixed. Again, fixed as a warranty item.
8. Most recent and stressing problem is a serious noise in the rear-end at 24,000 miles. When increasing speed from 0 to 40 miles per hour, a loud noise comes from the rear end. The longer you drive the vehicle, the louder the noise becomes. Again, the wife is beginning to complain that she can hear it. After reading other reviews, it seems that it could be either bearings, a universal joint, transmission, or even the rear end going out. We will see. I am making the appointment first thing Monday morning.

I feel that I got a good price on my Grand. However, I will not buy another Jeep. When I decided to trade in 1999, it wouldn't do me to have any other vehicle. On my next trade, I think that it will be another Ford Explorer or a Toyota 4 Runner. I have experienced too many problems for the short amount time in which I have owned the Grand Cherokee. Sorry Jeep! You really blew it.

My husband bought this car because we have a very large dog,we sold our 99 VW Golf and got this one.In Istanbul traffic is terrific and a SUV is a very useful, the landscape have lots of ups and downs, in the winter it is snowy. So this car is very useful for me.If we consider this is a 93 year's model it is very solid and luxurious.I can say i am happy with it.My father had a Land Rover Range Rover and he traded it with an 2000 Grand Cherokee after he saw our 93 car solidness. In Turkey , second hand Grand Cherokees are too expensive but, first hand is aronud 70000 Dollars. So I can say this is a great car that i can recommend everyone.I tested Tahoes and Blazers they are not as good as Grand Cherokee i can say.
If i had an opportunity now i would get a new one tomorrow.

Trans. shifts one time ok, the next clunky...very irratic. Clunky drive train at a stop, fancy dancy like no other drive train ( Quadra drive) makes noise when turning at low speeds, just like all others and if yours doesn"t yet, it will.

$37000. THe problem is the dealerships that are trained to lie to you and make up ignorant garbage for lame excuses so that DC can keep producing cars and not parts. When describing the drive train noise to the 5star, he had the nerve to tell me when you turn the wheel all the way it makes a noise. I said "You mean a hydraulic noise like every other power steering unit in the world does"? THese guys take us consumers for total idiots. I bought the Jeep to tow and it does a fine job. If we could get respect from the manufacturer this just might be a pretty good vehicle!!!!!!! How about it DC??????

Strength:

Looks, Features (like the dual control A/C), Quadra-Trac (used it more than I like to admit), 4.0 I6 actually gets the milage it said on the sticker.

Weakness:

Seatbelt locked at 2,000 miles. Dealer fixed it the next day. Otherwise everything works great! Needs real wood and a leather covered shift lever.

Well, I got the Jeep for $5,000 below MSRP. Looks and runs great. I have a 2000 black limited with the I6. Haven't had any of the transmission or transfer case problems that I've seen on here. I'm pleased with the gas milage. I'm averaging around 18 mpg with mostly city driving. The Infinity sound system is great.

Nice Exterior, nice
Colour, Nice after market cd player, Nice interior. the factory tint is nice

Weakness:

Everything that is not mentioned above. Has been in to be service muliply times. The service from Chrysler is unacceptable. Chrysler believes we should accept the way our jeep is because it is normal. Chrysler told us that we should not expect a cadlliac from a truck. The rotors have been replaced twice. The rear differtial gears replaced, the bearing were also replaced. A linkage in the transmition was also replaced. The front and rear brakes were also replace several times. Shifting problems in the transmition, clunking in the brakes, wouldn't shift out of second, steering shakes at speeds over 60km. steering also pulls to the right and makes screaching sounds when you turn a corner. Rearend howls, sluggish at even a slight incline, recieve static eletricity shocks from the cloth seats. The starter is also now going and the factory alarm arms itself and won't turn off. The rear seats won't lock down and often lift up when you quickly stop. It also idles very high. The paint also scratches easily.

I wouldn't recommend this vehicle unless you like investing in lemons.

Strength:

good looks
Selec-Trac full time four wheel drive
nice to drive

Weakness:

1. Air conditioner was faulty; refrigerant always leaking out. I had it fixed about 6 times, spent about $1,000. Recently learned that Chrysler admitted there was a fault and had extended warranty on the a/c to 7 years/kilometers. Chrysler reimbursed me the money I had spent on the a/c. However, my warranty is about to run out and I am not confident that the a/c won't leak again.

2. Rear brake Light would some times stay on after depressing the brake pedal. I would drive around with the brake lights on and not know until I parked the vehicle. If the brake light is on, the cruise control won't work. Dealers (more than one) not able to determine the problem. Annoying and dangerous. Now I always lift the brake pedal with my toe after I brake.

3. Clunking in transmission/transfer case when shifting into reverse or forward. There also seems to be some clunking when accelerating and decelerating at low speeds. Annoying. I have been told that this is normal. Best way to avoid clunk is to shift very slowly.

4. Recently, I experienced an intermittent problem with the overdrive disengaging and the transmission dropping into third gear. Dealer unable to reproduce or diagnose problem.

5. When I first bought the vehicle, the stereo would buzz unless i turned on the running lights. Eventually fixed by the dealer.

6. Unpredictable electricals. For example, the onboard computer would show a rear light burnt out when it wasn't. After I turned off the vehicle the warning would disappear.

7. The fit and finish is lacking. Ever see that car commercial where they rolled a ball bearing down the seams of the body panels? Forget it with a jeep. Everything is slightly misaligned, eg. a door may stick out a 1/4" inch. You have to look but the faults are there. Poor quality control.

8. My catalytic converter is rattling. Appararently, the baffles wear or rust out and the beads begin to roll around in the converter. It makes quite a rattling noise when I start the engine or slam a door but apparently does not affect the performance of the converter. It is an expensive fix ($800), so I've decided to live with it until I need to change the whole exhaust system. Apparently there was a five year warranty (my truck is almost 7 years old). Keep your eyes (and ears) open at the 5 year mark and catch this problem before your warranty runs out.

9. Biggest design flaw IMO: placing spare tire in the the trunk. A 235 tire takes up almost 20% of the trunk space. I can put more sets of golf clubs in my wife's Accord than in the Grand Cherokee.

I've enjoyed driving the vehicle (and will continue to drive it, Hey I can't afford to replace it; besides, I like driving an SUV but would be reluctant to buy a new replacement with the recent gas price hikes). However, I would probably not buy another Jeep. I like the full time four wheel drive capabilities (I think the only other vehicle with this is the Range Rover). The body design is also appealing. However, I am totally dissatisfied with the reliability and the fit and finish of the vehicle. I 've been told that Nissan Pathfinders are extremely reliable (and the new bodies are very Jeep-like).

Great exterior looks, beautiful interior. Go Anywhere, Do Anything attitude. Steering wheel is awesome in both feel and function. Rides great on highways. Love sitting up high. 4WD make you feel safe in snow blizzards and mountains. No engine problems in 68K miles.

Weakness:

Engine is rough on downshifts when setting cruise or climbing hills. Ride can be rough in town on bumpy roads due to the solid front and rear axles. Cruise light and rear windshield wiper stopped working after a couple of years. Initially problems were the CD player and the fuel gauge but were fixed under warranty after about 10 trips to the local shop.

I paid $27,500 for a 97 loaded Laredo and would recommend similar and the 98 model if you want a true 4WD vehicles. I plan to keep mine for several more years. I have been test driving cars to replace my wife's Nissan Sentra and like the new Nissan Maxima for driving and the Toyota Avalon for riding in. I like the new Mazda Tribute alot for a SUV for the money and the Lexus RX300 for its luxury.

Powerfull V8. Good sound system

Weakness:

Unfortunatelly this car was a lemon. Brakes are ridiculos for this heavy SUV, took 5 times to the dealer for replacement and refacing of the discs. It didn't work. The car has absolutely no handling at all. If you drive this car faster than 60 mp/h you are putting your life and the other drivers in danger. I had to align this car 3 times. The gas pump had probles twice. The air conditioning system is a joke, you can put on MAX in a 95 degree day, and would make no difference. The car used to make 11 mpg in the city. That was my first and last SUV.

JUST BUY A SUV IF YOU LIVE IN THE DESERT OR IF YOU HAVE LOTS AND LOTS OF SNOW. I DEFENITELLY DON'T RECOMEND THIS CAR. DON'T BUY SUV'S.........
