Strength:

Very fast on the highway. Very agile on the trails.

Weakness:

Several minor (nuisance) problems.

The price was 35K.

Bad News:
I have been dissapointed with the nuisance type problems that came up on my Jeep: a rattle in the driver seat, a rattle in the steering column, and a rattle in the hatch door. All of these problems are very minor, but the Jeep has 30,100 pampered miles, and for 35 thosand clams one expects better. Also, I would rather have a button to disengage the 4WD and obtain better mileage (like my 1990 Jeep Grand Wagoneer).

Good News:
I have been very impressed with the highway performance of the Jeep. The acceleration is comparable to my 1994 Rx-7 twin turbo. The level of luxury of is understated and in good taste. It is possible to sustain 85 mph for 12 hours without over straining any components.

I have been very impressed with the off-road performance of the Jeep. The obvious advantage is the smooth handling of the quadra-coil suspension. The limited-slip differential keeps traction in the scariest uphill, and I have seen S-10 blazers struggle on terrain that my Jeep breezes through. The up-country suspension has never bottomed out, even crawling over big rocks.

Strength:

Styling, ride, Selec-trac 4 wd system

Weakness:

Build quality, dealer service, very poor Daimler-Chrysler
customer service

Price paid $34000 (CDN). Owned a 93 Grand Cherokee that
was relatively problem free except for having to replace
the front rotors at 35 and 85 km. Problems with the 99
included various leaks in the differentials, transfer case,
loud whine in the rear axle and a vibration that could
be felt in the seat, steering wheel and despite 6 trips to
the dealer it could not be fixed. I loved the way it drove
and handled. But for the price it does not represent a good
value for your dollar. The excellent ride and handling does
not compensate for the very iffy reliability. Dealer service
is poor at best and Daimler-Chrysler has to be the worst at
trying to resolve a complaint with. I found the front seats
to be uncomfortable after a long trip and there isn't a
lot of cargo space unless you fold the rear seats down. As
others said gas mileage isn't that much of a concern, you
know that going in that it isn't going to be the best. Finally I had it with Chrysler and I sold it. I can't really
say if a Ford Explorer is better, but it probably couldn't
be any worse. Chrysler has stunning designed vehicles but
they can't back it up with reliabilty. From what they spent
on redesigning the 99 you would think it would be better.
Based on this I would not recommend a 99 or 2000 Grand
Cherokee, wait another year until they get all the bugs out.
Until then I would not buy another Jeep.

Style, Ride & Handling, Infinity Stereo System, Equipment Ergonomics.

Weakness:

Poor gas milage, Flimsy steering control.

I highly recommend this vehicle becaus of it's styling, rid and overall fit and finish. There have been some quality problems with Grand Cherokees in prior model years but I think most of those problems have been taken care of by the manufacturer and the OEMs'.
The ride is totaly different than that of Ford Explorer and the interior layout, well surpasses any othere SUV.
The fit and finish is comparable to European vehicles and it gives you a "built solid" feeling.
I have never had a better stereo system than this one in any of my past vehicles.

Strength:

Confort, Infinity Gold stereo system (Wish I could here it with the sub), Ride is very smooth, V8 is extremly powerful.

Weakness:

None I have found in the 8000+ mile I have already put on it in 3 months.

The only thing I had bad that has happened to me with this vehicle is a deer hit me while I was on the highway. The dealer near my house in Princeton did an incredible job at repairing the damage. The only thing I would do different if I could buy this Jeep again is get a different color. I have Patriot Blue Pearl Coat, looks incredible but scratches very very easy. If you don't care about gas mileage, like me get the V8. This engine is very powerful for this size vehicle. I will be buying another when this one gets too old to keep anymore as long as I don't run into some of the problems that some of you are all writing about.

Strength:

I love the the look. The ride, power, and handling are great. The interior feel and materials seem more expensive. Everthing is so though out. Do you know it has Adjustable Cup Holders? I sold Toyota's before, the Jeep gives bang for the bucks. Everything fit and feels good. All me friends love it too.

Weakness:

1. Who doesn't want high MPG? I have been averaging around 17.5 mpg local and highway. From talking to other SUV owner, this is consider good. A friend bought a Nissan Exterra, and she gets less even with a V6 and a manuel tran. 2. The clunking from the transmission when shifting from nuetral to reverse. The dealer states is normal, as well. I don't like the sound, but will live with it if everything works good. 3. The Jeep does pull to the right, like what most have stated. At the same time, I have noticed it also pulls the left. I quess if it does not show bias to anyone part of the road, I'm OK. 3. The seats bottoms are too short. I'm only 5'7" and my laps are only partially supported. They hang out uncomfortablly. 4. For a 30k SUV, the gas cap should have had a lock. Now I have to go get one of those gas cap lock. Why did they leave this out? 5. I got the Infinity sound upgrade. It some great at times and not at others. There is a poor link somewhere.

I bought my Jeep from Carsdirect.com. I pay under invoice for it and they delivery. I did not have to deal with the Salesman and that was a big plus.

For all the troubles and problems it has, I considered them acceptable. Yes, I recommend it.

I can live with these errors. At the end of it all, it is a great vehicle to own and drive. Maybe I'm saying this now, because I haven't own it long. The way I see it, if you nick-pick over something, you'll find faults. Just enjoy it for what it is. It is an off-road ready SUV. I will take you to places you'll never imagine. Excuse it for shaking and rattling. If you want a car, buy a Camry and you don't have to deal with these bugs.

Strength:

The style is great, and the leather seating is far more comfortable that the explorers or 4runners. The stereo (infinity gold) is probably the best stock sound system I have heard in a vehicle.

Weakness:

I have returned with my Grand Cherokee, 10 times to my dealership with problems. My brake rotors went after 1 month, my transmission went 3 months after the rotors, and my coolant system failed this past week. I hightly recomend you look carefully at the JeEP. Its style is great, and the seating is awsome, but the overall value is very poor. I highly recommend the Nissan Pathfinder, or the Oldsmobile Bravada before the jeep.

Strength:

Awesome pickup with the V-8. Decent handling and braking. Very comfortable seating and great electronics. Infinity Gold sound system is a real pleasure. Overall, a comfortable and fun ride.

Weakness:

One very big thing - it has died on me four times at varying speeds in traffic for no apparent reason. I have experienced a complete loss of power at 10, 25, 35, and 50 miles per hour.

Three times the vehicle started up immediately and I was able to proceed, the fourth time it wouldn't start for an hour. I had it towed twice to the dealership, as I didn't want it to happen again on the way to the dealer after I was able to get it home. This was a very unnerving experience as it happened twice on major thoroughfares in fairly heavy traffic. The dealer (a 5-Star) the first time chalked up the problem to someting called a cam sensor, which had apparently gone bad. I asked if this was common and the reply was, "well, not really, it must have been a bad one from the factory". The second time the dealer was able to experience the problem after a few hours of test driving, but was unable to diagnose the problem. After four days in the shop, the dealer apparently called headquarters and was told to "reprogram the computer", whatever that means. I asked the mechanic if he could guarantee that the problem would not happen again and was told that "I'd be lying if I told you that".

That response didn't provide much comfort as I do most of my driving in and around the city. If it happens again I intend to pursue Lemon litigation as this is a major personal safety issue.

Other than that significant problem, I also had to go in for a vibration problem that occurred when turning sharp at slow speeds - the diagnosis was "incorrect transmission fluid put in at the factory". I've had no problems since the fluid was changed.

Two other peeves - an occasional clunking sound from the transmission when taking off at slow speeds and a pronounced rough idle at certain times. I had the idle checked at the aforementioned transmission fluid change and was told "that it was in the acceptable range".

$29,000. I honestly can't say that I would recommend this vehicle to anyone due to the very scary and undiagnosed problem of stalling while moving. This is a shame because most everything else so far seems great.

Strength:

I love the looks, and handling of the vehicle

Weakness:

I have had troubles with this truck from the beginning. To Date, it has hada fuel pump, power steering pump, 2 sets of rotors, 4 resurfacing of the rotors, shifting problems in teh transmission, clunking when coming to a stop, and last but not least, a constant pulling to the right which I always have to keep the steering wheel slightly turned to the left to keep the truck tracking correctly. The vehicle has been in the shop about 6 times, and they still have failed to correct the shifting problems, clunking in the transmission, and the pulling to the right. The dealership (a 5 star one no less) can not seem to get it right. I was told that there is no adjustment for the pulling to the right, and that the roads in Florida are crested to the right for water runoff (I own 2 other vehicles, and none of them do this). One time I brought the car into for repair, and the service rep handing me the Lemon Law booklet. I have filed for this, had them look at the car for the last time. They refuse to acknowledge a problem with the vehicle, and I am in the process of arbitration. All this and spending $30,000 for it...nice

If you are a tolerant person, and dont mind the continuous trips to the service department, and can just enjoy the vehicle for the style, comfort and handling, then I would recommend it.
If you want to get quality for your money, then this is NOT the vehicle for you. It cost me about $30,000, with the extras that I have. Today I saw one in the newspaper for $20,000 (a 99 Laredo like mine) Although I dont know the number of miles, and the options, I would still say that that is a heck of a chunk cut from the Original prices. I guess people are starting to get the work about the quality, thus the value goes way down.....Good luck
