Strength:

Good power. Nice shape.

Weakness:

Almost everything. Very poor considaring its a $30+ car.

Ride is too hard, stereo makes pop sound when door opens, alignment pulls to the right (Jeep says its normal, so they dont fix it. Nice...). Very squeeky sounds from underside when putting in gear. Many clunk sounds from trans when putting in gear.
Milage is okay. Design is nice. This doesn't make up for the BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE.
After 10 car in my lifetime, I must say that Jeep isn't worth your time. I would look at something else.
Take note: If you live near Burlingame, CA DONT BUY FROM LES VOGEL! They are the worst.

Strength:

Powerful, fast for an SUV, good pickup, comfortable, very nice stereo system.

Weakness:

not much. Just started having a little ignition problem

It's a very nice SUV. I have barely had any problems with it. Drove into my garage with bikes on the top. Ripped off the rack. It's fun for an SUV. I have brought it offroad a few times, and it performes very nicely. It is the quickest SUV in it's class.
The Infinity Gold Stock Stereo is very good. Much better then the one in my father's BMW. We paid for the most expensive one, and it was worth it. It's a great car. I saw a lot of reviewers that have had a lot of problems with them. I have had nothing, except for the small ignition one. I would recommend this car.

Great outdoor vehicle - lots of cargo space if you remove the passenger seats. I use it as a tent when i go camping.
Luxurious interior
Handling
Exterior Styling
A lot of gadgets!
Comfortable ride

Weakness:

Poor engine - there is always something wrong with the engine!

I only have about 80000 miles on this car and it sounds and acts as if it's going to die any minute! In fact, this car has already died twice on me. One time, the engine just collapsed while i was going 60 miles/hour on the highway! Then i found out that the engine coolant has emptied while i was driving and the engine just decided to stop in the middle of the highway. This is one car that has the look but does not have any substance.

Model Reviewed: Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2L V8

Strength:

This Jeep was purchased new, early in 1993, by my dad. He drove it for 35,000 miles, turing it over to me when I got my license. Nothing is more fun than a 4X4 on a snowy day...you are king. This car has plenty of room----he called it his personal locker room, and I agree. Took my brother to college in it (all his stuff). Golf stuff in back, anything is game in the Jeep. This car had more character than any car I've ever known--it was a blessing for the high school years...but it was expensive...(fortunately, I wasn't paying for it).

Weakness:

While under warranty, the expenses of this car came from poor gas mileage (13 MPG), and time lost taking it to the dealer. After the warranty, it was good for about 2 major jobs a year. costing $1500 in repairs annually...even though I loved it, you can't dispute those costs.
The problem, as I see it, is this---those who most often purchase these cars are looking for luxury....this includes perfection. Jeep can make a workhorse that you fall in love with, but it hasn't yet figured out the reliablity thing, nor has it figured the quiet thing.

Problems were:

Body-
(1) The clear coat on the hood was defective. Maybe hurt with sun, I don't know. Bottom line----it had chips that were visible up close, as wax would congregate in them. Ouch.
(2) Rust on bottom of back hatch (inside, but would soon work it's way out, I bet), began to form.

Interior, luxury, etc.-
(1) Factory stereo broke in 1999, clock on it as well. Unexplained cause. $300+ to repair....replaced with pioneer.
(2) Air conditioning had odor (like a urinal) when started up. Could not be fixed...ever.
(3) Many rattles and shakes.
(4) Dash and coverings often loose. Could not be fixed.
(5) Sun visor clip broken many times. Couple of bucks to replace each.

Other exterior-
(1) Fog light lens fell off and broke. Costly to replace.
(2) Side marker light (Horizontal at front corner) often melted, causing replacement, which was awkward to get at.

Engine, drivetrain, etc.-
(1) Ran hot, 210+ on hot days...no confidence in cooling system. Water pump out, (2000) at 61000 miles.
(2) Electrical system often seemed taxed. Seems it needed better alternator. Went through 3 batteries in 2 years.
(3) Brakes were big problem. Many fixes needed before 30000 miles, even. Also, pedal was big throw before brakes would kick in.
(4) Brakes would squeak.
(5) Brakes went out completely (luckily in driveway). Some cyllander blew...forgot which....NOT COOL.
(6) Transmission clunks when put in gear, through reverse, etc.
(7) Periodic rough idle.
(8) Steering had A LOT of play. Much correction to be done.
(9) Rearview mirror fell....reaffixed twice.

A great car for a kid that didn't pay for it in the first place, didn't pay for gas, had something else to drive when it was in the shop, and didn't play for the shop bills.

Otherwise, a real money sucker, and not slick (for dad) even when in best shape, mostly cause of poor design, but lots because of quality control.

Dealers always a pain to deal with. And, near the end, the five star dealers were pretty lousy too. About that five star thing. Anyone notice that virtually all dealers are five star dealers. Face it, it means nothing. The same bad dealer from 1993 was five star by 2000 and being snooting and ripping us off for the same old tricks. Just a note....

Value stinks.

But god, that car had character, V8 was a beast.....I really loved it. (That's why I had to do the 5 overall!)

Strength:

Plenty of power from just the 4.0 V6...lots of room (enough for three 10" subs)...lots of interior gadgets and things to play around with... one of the best vehicles in my high school parking lot right now (aside from the 2000 Eclipse GT)... looks mint with two Hella Rallye 4000 lights and a brush guard...nice off road as is on road

Weakness:

drops out of gear kinda hard.

well...heh....for paying nothing for it (parents rule!), it is certainly a kick ass vehicle...i love the dual role aspect, knowing that i can kick it off road and on. Sounds outstanding with a car audio system installed too!

Strength:

Great exterior styling. 5.2 litre V8 provides plenty of passing power. Interior is luxurious and very hospitable. The ride and handling are exceptionally good in a vehicle this size.

Weakness:

A very loud, obnoxious grinding noise that seem to come from the rear differential started at about 10000km. I had in the shop 12 times over an 18 month period to address the problem and finally on the last visit the dealership decided to replace the entire rear drive assembly including differential, rear axle etc. which finally corrected the problem.

If the temperature dropped below approx. -15f the automatic overdrive lockout would never release meaning I would have to drive 40 miles to work in 3rd gear. I experienced the problem at least 100 times and the dealership could never figure it out.

I was not impressed.

Many things I love about the Grand Cherokee, however, the reliability problems do put a damper on this.

It's a great vehicle when things are working properly and hopefully Chrysler will work out the problems. Unfortunately for them, I've given the nod to the 2001 Infiniti QX4 as my next SUV.

Similar Products Used:

2001 Infiniti QX4: Engine is equivalent to the V8 4.7 in power. Cabin noise is much lower. Ride is equivalent. Fit and finish is superior and finally, you can pick it up for close to the same price as a fully loaded limited.

EVERYTHING!

Thinking of buying a Jeep...DON'T! We purchased the 1999 Limited Mar '99. There is CONSTANTLY something wrong with it. Daimler-Chrysler has TERRIBLE customer service. This is the worst vehicle I have ever owned. Hopefully this note will save someone from unnecessary stress. If you want to know the specifics of this worthless overpriced vehicle, feel free to email me at Mrs_Knight@hotmail.com .

here's a list of my most recent problems:

· Power door lock does not work - on either door.
· Remote control will lock and unlock all doors EXCEPT driver's door.
· Opening the driver's door does NOT unlock any of the other doors.
· Remote won't set alarm.
· Panic alarm does not work.
· Windows on passenger side do not work.
· Mirrors move (especially in cold temperatures) at night, do not automatically readjust when remote is activated, and has to be manually set each morning.
· Mirrors never reset automatically between drivers.
· Mirror on passenger side does not work.
· The engine often stalls and frequently takes longer than normal to crank/start.
· Driving down the road, I heard a big "bang" that resembled a car backfiring or a tire blowout.
· It sometimes pulls (like it would if I were going up a hill) and it shifts into overdrive. This happens when I'm driving on a straight road and not accelerating - it even happens sometimes when the cruise control is on. I'm not certain if I'm explaining this right, but it seems like the engine (or something) is working harder than it should and I feel it as the truck jerks/shifts. The timing seems off.
· The Universal Transceiver won't program - even after following all directions.

Strength:

This car is the most versatile car on the face of the Earth. I love to drive it everyday especially in the winter the simple selec-trac system does it job. As a college student, this Jeep proves to be useful for setting up party, mobilizing friends from place to place, and a bit off off-roading latenight.

Weakness:

Since the gas become more expensive, I want to sell this car away!! However, a bumpy ride and poor truck space are my minor weakness for this car

Overall it is a fun vehicle to drive eventhough there are some minor problems after 10,000 miles. The three years warranty still be very useful. This $30,000 car is fun, but give it couple more years until you switch to a more reliable Japanese SUV. Good luck.

great 4x4 - don't think i could get it stuck if i tired - goes through snow like nothing else i ever owned or rented (that would include 4x4 surburbans) - great seats/heated leather - great sound system/10disc infinity gold - good highway drivin and around town vehicle

Weakness:

gas milage for the six cylinder i think could be better - i got the six on the advise of my friends who also happen to to run the jeep dealership where i leased it. i wanted the v8 but after talking to the service and manager and reading up on the problems with the v8 and quadra-drive i went with the six which so far is bullittproof - it does however sound like a tractor motor. when turning left i get a vacuum type sound from the steering column, dealer could not find source and iam not overly concern about it.

i'am leasing mine based on a price below invoice of 28K which i think is fair since the sticker was over 33k

i would highly recommend the grand cherokee
