Strength:
Power, off road prowess, snow traction, looks, infinity stereo. Routine maintennance is not too tough or expensive for me to do myself.
Weakness:
Viscous coupling in the transfer case goes out, then you notice it when steering to make a tight turn. It will act up again every time you drive a while or take a long trip and gets worse as time goes by. Tire maintennance (matching tires and correct pressure) is CRUCIAL or you will fry the viscous coupling. Replaced at Best Western Transmissions for ~$650 US. Overheats when left idling on hot days and the AC quits working when idling on hot days. Cannot switch into 2 wheel drive if you have problems with the Quadratrac. Wife and I love the luxury and capability of going anywhere, with the ability to stow, tow or roof our luggage. Pretty comfortable and with 136,000 it shows little wear. Similar Products Used: Jeep Cherokee 4.0 - less problems and less that can go wrong. 86 300ZX Turbo - love it, everything works well. |

Grand Cherokee Limited
Strength:
Strong engine, good towing capacity
Weakness:
Terrible gas mileage 15 mpg Bought the vehicle with special package including 6000 lb towing package (sunroof, 10 way power seats, etc). Specifically purchased this vehicle to tow 24 foot SeaRay twice a year to the launch to put in a marina. At first (for first 12k miles) was very pleased with vehicle, no problems other than slight fit and finish. Since then have had the vehicle in shop for 1. replace heater in drivers side seat twice 2. Replace rotors and pads twice (vehicle has 36000 miles on it) so figure the rotors last for 12000 miles? (not good) 3. Had 36000 mile maintenance done for $600.00 and dealer put three crappy looking (no cap) lug nuts on after rotating tires (they told me the caps must have broken off, a bunch of BS). Vehicle stalls every now and then and the temperature/compass is starting to fail (read 66 degrees F in 95 degree wheather), dealer can not find any codes told it could be water in the gas (nope put exact same gas in my volvo, it doesn't stall). No loaner program at dealership. Compared to my other cars this is by far the worse as far as recalls, service bulletins and items failing even with professional maintenance. Will I buy another Jeep, no way. I'd rather part with an additional $5000 and get the Honda or BMW or Mercedes or Lexus. Strength:
The performance is astonishing with the v8, handling is great for an SUV, styling = perfect, braking is excellent and love the little feautures such as heated seats and overhead console.
Weakness:
fuel economy is pretty bad with the v8 but not much better with the 6 cylinder....but why do u buy an SUV...for fuel economy?? i dont think so This vehicle has been wonderful so far....its been 4 months and i love my limited grand cherokee. Similar Products Used: I had a 1996 jeep grand cherokee..loved it but this new one feels better built and more solid than my old one....this one is faster and fits todays styling and design for autos. |

Looks, 4.0 V6 is a great engine, good sound system
Weakness:
Rear end - I am now having problems with the rear end and trying to decide if I should have it repaired or replaced I currently have around 65k miles on it. Does anyone know if Jasper does rear ends and if so do they have one for this. Great looking vehicle. Has aftermarket rotors and raybestos pads that are not any problem. Some electrical glitches every now and then that I don't understand. V6 is a good engine, but going uphill with the air on leaves it a bit short on power. I need to find out more about the rear end before I would consider buying another. If this is that large of a issue on these vehicles why hasn't there been a class action suit filed. Does this merit such action? Similar Products Used: Mitsubishi Montero I have is fantastic and runs better than this Jeep and the Montero has 150k miles on it. |

Looks nice, and if you are looking to buy the jeep bargain with the sales people. The sticker price for a 2001 jeep grand cherokee was $28,540, my friend bargained and got the price down to $22,540. The Jeeps are Marked up high so BARGAIN and do your homework before seeing the Sales Rep.
Weakness:
Poor Reliability - maybe the 2002's will be better The car is not all that great. The looks are nice, dont get me wrong but why by cars just on looks. The jeep is not all that reliable. so think before buying this car I've had so many trips to the service department and so much money wasted. Similar Products Used: Nissan Pathfinder - My friend has a pathfinder- Nice. If you are in the market to buy a Suv I would strongly suggest the acura MDX or the Pathfinder. |

Strength:
quiet simi luxury quality smooth ride 5.2 v8 runs great, stereo Cargo room
Weakness:
no umph when stepping on the gas until about 30 mph does not handle like a sports car. (old cherokee did) a litle bit of wind noise. 1994 Jeep cherokee was totaled (see my Cherokee review) purchased a Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2 V8 to replace it. Have driven over 1000 miles and have been very impressed. like the room confort and power seats. engine lacks the umph that the 4.0 had. Believe that is do to wieght of the Grand. Made my own cold air inductuon system which gives the Grand better gas milage, about 15-17 city and 20-22 on highway average of 75mph. Not as sporty or as tight handling as the Cherokee but makes up for that in being a simi luxury Suv with the capability of going any where. no inside engine noise Similar Products Used: Jeep liberty stunk compared to Grand and Cherokee. Ford Escape, Would by it over the liberty. |

AS ABOVE I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START.HOW ABOUT JUST THROWING MONEY AWAY FOR THE 2 MISERABLE YEARS THAT I HAVE OWNED IT. THANK HEAVENS I BOUGHT AN EXTENDED WARRENTY, ALTHOUGH THAT WASN'T MUCH HELP. THE 1ST WEEK I HAD IT I HAD A TRIP PLANNED TO LAKE TAHOE. I NOTICED FLUID UNDER THE CAR, ON FURTHER INSPECTION I FOUND OUT IT WAS TRANSMISSION FLUID. AREN'T THESE SUPPOSEDLY RESPECTABLE DEALERS SUPPOSE TO CHECK SOMETHING AS IMPORTANT AS THAT. THEN I HAD TO ARGUE WITH THEM TO FIX IT(ISN'T THERE SOMETHING LIKE A 30 WARRENTY AS WELL AS MY EXTENDED WARRENTY. Similar Products Used: THANK HEAVENS I HAVEN'T HAD A CAR THIS BAD BEFORE. |

Jeep Grand Cherokee
Strength:
Smooth ride (when rotors are intact), appealing look
Weakness:
Problems with reliability: rotors replaced 4 times in 54000 miles. passenger window failure (would not open/close). air conditioning broken twice (not broken, but air would only come out defroster vent). Generally enjoy the ride, except when it is bouncing because the rotors have failed AGAIN. Similar Products Used: I had a Jeep Cherokee Country prior to this vehicle, and I wish I had it back now. This vehicle sucks - not worth the hassle that you endure with the rotors. If you do have this vehicle, do yourself a favor - buy after market rotors. The Mopar rotors suck. |
