Strength:

Looks great and is towable with all four down.

Weakness:

Mileage sucks and service for the most part is the same.

I find this vehicle to be much like a plush tractor even to the point of unpredictablilty. I have experienced noises, poor and eratic fuel consumption, heater/air that works on drivers side only and reverse on passanger side. It has been in the shop 4 times for these issues without resolve. They have downloaded patches for the mileage issues and I get 12mpg one time (highway) to 15. It sucks in this department.

Too many things to list here, see comments.
Poorly built for the price, even though it's a new model year.

Driving a '96 GC, I couldn't wait to get into the '99. This is a beautiful truck when it's running. The V-8 is powerful, and oveall drivability for a SUV is great. Unfortunatly that's where it ends. Reading these other reviews, my problems are the same, but it's nice to have a place to vent other than to my service manager. Brakes squeeked from 8k, and needed replacing by 12k. All the windows have failed, even beyond the warranty but they replaced the motors free anyway. Front end vibrates and rubs on hard turns. Replaced the battery twice, the second time after only 4 months - wow, I only had to pay for the labor! Let's hear it for MOPAR parts - garbage. CD player and speakers on the fritz. The auto seat puts my side mirror in a different position everytime I get into it. The auto lights don't turn on or off automatically unless I'm at the dealership complaining about it (go figure). Front axil leaked, and damaged rotors. And had to do 4-wheel drive service ($500) at 37k. I don't use it off-road, but drove it in low once every couple of months - still had the bill. Sunroof doesn't seat properly. I could go on and on. My problems are not as bad as some, and worse than others. My lease ends in 6 months, and other than gas and oil, nothing else will be done to this truck. On design side, the side bumper/door guards are destroyed by the smallest dings. At least the Laredo's plastic ones held up to typical parking lot abuse. And for $40k, you'd think you'd get real interior wood accents, rather then the plastic wood-looking garbage that vibrates when you turn the radio on. The biggest shocker is other than a Range Rover which I can't afford, I can't think of another SUV I'd rather drive for under $40k. I'm trying to figure out if I should get a Laredo model next time, or wonder if they have fixed the kinks in the Limited. Perhaps I'll get get an Audi All-Wheel, or the BMW X5.

Strength:

Yeah, the engine rocks, and it is a sharp looking SUV (actually, I still think it's the best looking, but looks aren't everythig). The stereo is great. I had purchased a bunch of aftermarket stereo stuff I was going to install because I thought it wouldn't be up to par. Instead it's the best sounding factory system I'v heard. Heated seats are roasty warm and quick to get there. Factory tinted windows help keep it cool in the summer(need that here in Georgia). Leather seats are stylish and don't get hot thanks to window tint. Power seats are highly adjustable, lumbar support is good. Guages light up blue on white background. Looks very good and makes me want to drive more at night! Center console storage is roomy and holds lots of stuff. Tows great! Granted, it was only a motorcycle on a uhual trailer, but I could barely even tell it was back there.

Weakness:

*Gas Milage(15MPG) But then again what did you expect from an SUV this darn fast?
*MAINTENANCE / QUALITY
1) 9,000 miles now and my brakes are starting to pulsate
(That's probably the rotors everyone else has been
(talking about)
2) At 6K miles the driver's side heated seat went out
requiring the whole heating assembly in the seat to be
replaced
3) 5,5000 miles -The climate controls went on the fritz
would only work at either extreme ends of the temp
settings(very hot or very cold) They had to replace
some core electronical part in the climate system
4) Condensation from A/C "drips" on passengers feet if
A/C is used on long road trips(more than an hour)
5) Transmission "clunks" as it downshifts if I'm in a
residential area doing 30 and coast down to say...20.
6) WAY too much wind noise from driver's side window.I
constantly find myself trying to roll it up more only
to find it's already up as far as it's supposed to
go.Too much noise for a 30K automobile(on or offroad)
BTW-Dealer tells me this is "normal".
* SEATS- I know I said they're adjustable above. True, but the bottom of the seat (for your thighs and buttocks) is way to short. I'm only 5'9" and my legs hang off more that what I would call acceptable. Also, rear passengers have little leg room for a 4 door vehicle.
*WOODTRIM- Fake plastic, looks fine, but wish it were real
* A/C- ALthough the heater is excellent, A/C lacks punch.
The air distribution through the front vents is very
uneven with the driver's side center vent recieving
way more than it's fair share of air to distribute.
Also, air doen't arrive easily to the rear leaving
passengers either hot, or you have to freeze. Should
have made air circulate better, vent distribution.

An HONEST review of a loaded 2001 JGC Limited (without 4X4)from a rather dissapointed owner. I REALLY wanted a GC based on the engine and looks. Now that I am dealing with the reality of owning one, I wish I'd spent my 30K on something else. That conspiracy theory mentioned earlier... it AINT no theory, it is REAL. Read enough of the 5 star "Reviews". They sound more like a quick sales pitch, rather than an owner review. Someone is trying to pump the #s here and I think that's plain dirty. After reading enough real reviews here I know the problems I am encountering are not isolated, but bona fide defects in quality. I read over 100 reviews from this forum before purchasing and still bought the grand cheroke, hoping the quirks would have been ironed out in the 2001 model. Whoops, I guess I shouldn't have rolled those dice.
I wouldn't flat out say "don't buy this vehicle", I would amend my statement to say"DO NOT BUY THIS VEHICLE WITHOUT THE MAXIMUM CARE WARRANTY WITH 50 DOLLAR DEDUCTABLE (OR 0 DEDUCTABLE)" . Also, the same day rental car is a MUST and doesn't cost that much more. With as much as your Jeep will be in the shop you'll thank yourself for having paid that extra little bit (it's like a hundred bucks more). Heck, I know all the guys at Enterprise by first name already! Care to discuss horror stories? email me please at carl3smith@hotmail.com

This is my third Grand Cherokee so it's obvious that I'm pleased with the car. I feel comfortable driving it and I'm impressed with the appearance. We also use it to tow a 20' boat. Mine is a V-8 and it handles towing very well.

Stereo with CD is great, Little computer thing is cool, GREAT OFF ROAD< AWESOME OFF ROAD. Not a bad car went it runs that is, Lots of power!

Weakness:

Horrable on gas ( 13mpg), too many to list, just a peice.
If you don't buy many american cars like me, don't buy the jeep V8, maybe with the V6, I've heard better things about the V6.

In so many letters how do I describe this car??? cool? nice?? or a P.O.S, well you guessed it- P.O.S (peice of shi*). For about the first 15,000 miles it had no problem, I though- wow! this truck is great, but I spoke too soon. At about 18,000 miles I had a truck load of problems, the fuel pump went, the AC didn't work, the transmission went, the breaks went, the tires were crappy, needed front shocks, I mean I can go on and on. Thank god I didn't have to pay for it. After all this stuff was fixed it worked fine again, I though to myself, maybe I just got a defected one, and once again I said to myself, wow this is a nice truck....Then about 10,000miles later it broke down again, the starter went... oh yay. Well got that fixed, and nothing happened until 60,000 miles. The fuel pumps went again, and nice $1000.00 for me to pay. So thats went I got rid of it, and I will never buy another american car again. At about 20,000miles I wanted to drive it off a steep hill.

I THINK THE JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE IS ONE OF, IF NOT THE BEST SUV MADE. I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY EVERYONE IS HAVING PROBLEMS (MAYBE U GUYS SHOULD TAKE CARE OF YOUR BABY) LIKE I DO. IM ALWAYS INSPECTING EVERYTHING FROM DOOR HANDLES TO TRANSMISSION (LOL). I HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH MINE. IVE THE 5.2 UNDER THE HOOD AND IT IS MAGNIFICENT. PUT A GOOD EXHAUST SYSTEM(SOUNDS UNBELEIVABLE) AND THIS BAD BOY REALLY MOVES. I LOVE IT ALOT AND WILL DEFINETLY BUY ANOTHER

Styling, space & comfort. No real problems other than a few warranty / recall issues.

Weakness:

Resale value seemed to drop over $10K in 2 years (??). Not the best gas mileage, but I didn't expect it with any SUV.

I have the 2wd, 6 cylinder Jeep G.C., 1999. I had the fuel pump replaced under warranty last year after it would stall. No problems with new pump. I have 27,000 miles on it and noticed an increasing noise coming from the driveshaft / rear end area at speeds above 25 mph. It's in the shop as I type this and the servie guy said they have been experiencing problems with the rear end. He believes it may have thrown a bearing. The only other problems have been recall issues (2) and a warranty issue where the shocks that hold the hood up need replacing as the hood won't stay up by itself. I did have a '95 G.C. and noticed the overall quality was better than my '99. In my opinion, the 6 cylinder is plenty of power as I don't do any towing. Provided the "rear end" issue clears up, my faith will be restored. I was VERY concerned the answer would be "we looked and couldn't find anything wrong....", but he did find something wrong. Fingers are crossed....

Reasonably comfortable ride for a medium SUV.

Weakness:

drivetrain

Fit/finish 8/10. Terrible gas mileage. Ongoing problems with drive train. Dealer currently installing it's second replacement rear end at 80,000 miles. Average rear end lifespan is less than 40,000 miles! First one died at 43,000 although started making noises at 30,000(reported repeatedly to dealer)...Chrysler "split" the cost of repairs. Now failed again, Daimler-Chrysler refuses to even contribute to the cost(fine print, any major replacement part is only guaranteed for 1 year of 12K miles).

Great looking, nice ride, lots of room (wish the spare was underneath).

Weakness:

Minor electrical problems, the radio stops playing and only plays again after removing the fuse and placing it back, then it only works for about 2 days. After weeks of flooding the passenger floor, the a/c drain has to be unclogged. I cranked the jeep one morning and the entire panel went out, including gas gauge, A/C, EVERYTHING. Took for service and was not able to diagnose any problems. The service center just reset the battery and it went back to working. Anyone else has similar problems? Love to hear about it bwoodcock778@hotmail.com. Any advice on the radio?

I love my jeep but have some concerns about the recent electrical problems at only 52,000 miles.

I love this car. The V-8 is amazing. I never knew a speedomoter needle can go up that fast! 0-60 in 6 to 7 sec. Great starts, I have actually peeled out in 4wd. Only minor mechanical problems. Not bad for 130,000 miles. The Infinity Gold blew me away. when you crank it up it feels like you have a subwoffer behind the seats. This car is unstoppable offroad. you can go from crusing at 85 mph, to serious offroading in a minute. This car is fast and it handles and breakes very good. it can also pull a 24 foot boat with ease. This is a dream car. The grand Cherokee combines luxjury, with comfort, with power, with sports sedan speed, with supreme offroading capability, with towing power. The absolute dream car. I never want to get rid of it. best 14K ever spent. Recommended buy
