Strength:
Fun to drive, good looks, quality in material, components and excellent fit and finish. Good gearbox and engine. Excellent AC and heating system.
Weakness:
So so gas mileage and breaks. I am an experienced driver and have own numerous vehicles in the past. My taste of cars are in the area of quality, workmanship, design and ride, not sheer power. I have owned best of imports and Japenies and most I purchased have been brand new. Given that, I looked at jeep for two years. I had used the 6 and 4 cyliders engines. I bought this one new and got a 4 cylinder with manual transmission, alloy wheels, cd and etc.. The only thing I did not get is the hard top and ABS. I chose 4 cylinder instead of 6 for various reasons. And I AM NOT disappointed at all. The 6 adds about 10% to the weight and the price and the compromise in power is only substantial if one use this USB off road more than 50% of the time. The 4 is assembled to a very close talerance, as a result a quick test drive at the dealership might give you wrong impresions. This engine need at least 7500 mile to loosen up. One is there, it will give more than what you really need. The highway power and ride is absolutely a delight. The 6 gives more power in 2000-3500 rpm range, not in very low range. The gas use is better that the 6. If this engine is broken-in properly (take it easy for first 3 months) it should give you 20-22 in combined driving condition. I found out this engines workes extremly well with low lead Shell gas and Castrol semi- synthetic oil. I have stuck to Mopar oil and air filter with excellent results. My car has been 100% trouble free and I only have changed oil 3 times during the first 6000 miles. Similar Products Used: Toyota 4Runner |

Wrangler 4.0
Strength:
I like the power of the 4.0. Great turning ratio. Dependable 4 wheel drive. Heat and AC work great. No mechanical or body problems.
Weakness:
The leaf spring suspension is a rough ride but then no Jeep is smooth. Wish Jeep would have kept round headlights. I paid 16,000 in 1996 for this Jeep fully loaded which was only because the 1997 just came out. I love this Jeep and would fully reccomend it as long as you get the 4.0. My fiance has a 1998 Jeep with a 4cyl. I'm glad I did not buy one. It lacks power and even with a 4.0 the interior and the ride are inadequate. My Jeep has been in Pa in the winter, in the south pacific for two years, and the worst roads in the country in New Orleans and I have had no complaints or failures. Averages between 15 and 18mpg. Strength:
Loved taking the top off. Saw many envious looks when driving it.
Weakness:
Weak engine power. The engine always seemed to rattle. Two recalls one on the airbags and one on the gas gage. The transmission slipped and sometimes reminded me of an old truck. Tires wore out quickly. The paint job scratched easily. Very poor gas milage. No storage space. Paid 19,000 for my JW sport. The 6 cylinder engine was horrible and I will not recommend the newer Jeeps. Just buy an older one and "fix it up". Your money will be better spent. Perhaps the 1997's were a bad year for Jeep Wranglers because I tend to see a lot of 97 Wranglers on used car lots. Similar Products Used: Land rovers are much better at off road but the jeep is a close second. The jeep is much better at off roading than all the other SUV's but it isn't worth the headache to own one. |

Strength:
-All-american attitude, personality
Weakness:
-Gas mileage is atrocious I paid $24,525 and it was almost loaded.. just didn't want the ABS or Auto options. I recommend a TJ to anyone who wants a reliable vehicle which is very fun to drive. This is not just an SUV.. it is a Legend!! It's the most instantly recognizeable vehicle in the world- Nuff Said!!I'm a college student and this is my 2nd TJ.. One thing i learned through the years w/ Jeep.. everyone loves them!! it's a toy.. that's what it is. "Jeep, There's Only One." Strength:
Everything. Best REAL SUV out there. The ultimate off road machine.
Weakness:
None This is the last, true, off-road vehicle available today. For everyone that put "rough ride, gas guzzler, etc..." in the weaknesses section...DEAL with it. This vehicle was never meant as a daily commuter, but was built as an off-road machine. It will out-perform all other so called "off road" vehicles out there. A Isuzu Rodeo's idea of off road is a dirt road...the Wrangler's idea of off road is a bunch of boulders. Similar Products Used: This vehicle is meant for an OFF ROAD vehicle. Nothing else compares. |

Wrangler Sport
Strength:
It isn't just a good sport utility vehicle, it's THE sport utility vehicle. Everything else is just trying. Good pickup (get the 4.0 engine), excellent 4wd, pretty much unstoppable save a major natural disaster.
Weakness:
Top takes a little longer than I'd like to remove, not too much cargo space, nowhere to put the doors if you remove them. People either love Jeeps or hate them, there really isn't anyone in the middle. If you've got a family, it'd only be good as a second car, but it'd be a perfect second car for people who only have 2wd vehicles. It's better for younger drivers, really, who won't complain about it not riding as smooth as their Lexus. First off, it is NOT as loud as people say it is. Second, it has great emergency handling. I got mine for about $22k, with 30" tires and a bunch of other off-road goodies. First suggestion, if you like music...ditch the factory radio and speakers. Replace the speakers, and if you want digital sound, get a Minidisc player. It's not cheap, but it is the ONLY way to get CD-quality sound in your Jeep without it skipping. Jeep Wrangler (soft top)
Strength:
Loads of fun. Feels like heaven when have top down in the Spring and Summer. Awesome to take to the beach. Soft top folds down and up easily. Good heater in Winter. Good looks. Head turner. Very good in the snow.
Weakness:
Noisy with soft top in winter. Lousy gas mileage (18/20 mpg) . Very unreliable. Have spent over $2000 repairing my Jeep. Had Jeep to dealer 4 times to fix exhaust problems. Every six months I'm in the dealership with another problem. This vehicle is the most unreliable vehicle I have ever had. Wrote complaint letter $16,800. Bought without radio and bought a radio and speakers on my own. Dealer rips you off with the price of factory crappy stereos. Better off ordering from Crutchfield magazine and installing yourself. Half the cost of factory system and 3 times better. After over 3 years of owning my Jeep, the body is still in good shape and the paint is in great condition. Exhaust was a MAJOR problem. Idles kind of rough at times. I have almost 80,000 on it now, so I guess I can expect that. Won't buy a Jeep again. |

Strength:
Awesome off-road capability. Easy to use soft top. Most fun you can have in public.
Weakness:
Not a good freeway hauler. Paid 16,300 + tax/tags. Got 7/70 bumper-bumper gold warranty extension with roadside service and anti-theft system. Had two problems: Gas guage got stuck at 1/4 tank and it ran out of gas. Later, seal on gas cap went and "Check engine" light came on, all I ever had to pay was the charge for the gas the repair guys put in the tank. Kudos to the great service from Bob Baker in Carlsbad, where I bought it. Great value! Proof? name ANY truly convertible 4x4's you can buy for the same price, or find any 4x4 that performs as well as a stock TJ that you can purchase for less than $20k. Note this is NOT a car! It is a niche vehicle- an off-road specific 4x4 design. If you are looking for anything else, join the masses and buy one of those explorer wannabes or a minivan. |

Fun to drive
Weakness:
Rough ride I would recommend this vehicle only as a second vehicle. Don't plan on going for long drives, you'll regret it! Good for a young single person. I've had a lot of luck with mine maintenace wise. It's been the best vehicle I've owned, but it's time for something a little more comfortable. It's a lot of fun to drive, although I found it wasn't that great hiway driving in the winter. Even with extra weight in the back, it tended to go all over the road. The wheel base is just too short. It's really quite a bit of fun with the top off, but you need at least two people to get the hard top off, and you'd only want to do it once a season. Similar Products Used: n/a |
