Strength:

Off road capabilities, solid feel, ability to take grueling punishment, classic utilitarian design, so many after market components each Jeep is unique...

Weakness:

Poor gas mileage, noise on highway

Best vehicle I've ever owned! Top off, doors off, great feeling to drive...
Great feeling when you see other SUV's (explorer & extera) turn back down a trail, and you go on with no problem... Spent $600 fixing oil leak, with two trips to shop, no other problems... 4.0L engine is solid, powerfull and reliable. I've had this Jeep for 2 years and love it now as much as day one!

Strength:

turns on a dime, easy to park, versatile, lots of fun

Weakness:

gas mileage (but you already knew that)

There is nothing else like it. Fun to drive, looks good, and you can go anywhere with it. It has good acceleration with the 6 cyl. and a manual trans. Up to 2000 rpms you get the most tourque and after that it doesn't accelerate as well...but it's a jeep and not a sportscar. The ac works well especially with the hard top. The dual top option is nice because it's like you can drive a new vehicle whenever you want. The sound system is pretty typical of a factory system. It's definitely a pretty smooth ride and you can go over anything you want..it's the best of both worlds. It's deifnitely worth the money you spend on it. like they say, it's a jeep thing.

Strength:

A solid performer, good acceleration, reasonably good handling from the new version of the suspension.

Weakness:

The top is incredibly difficult to put up and down! In the office parking garage the roof is too low for the top to go up and down. Wind noise is very high over around 50 mph.

The top-of-the-line 6 cylinder Sahara seems to have a lot going for it and it is fun to drive, but in the long run this vehicle disappoints. Perhaps it really is a young persons vehicle for I have gotten rather tired of it during the previous three years. It has proved to be reliable, however.

Strength:

Great off road capabilities, fun to drive with the top down (I recomend getting the dual top feature with both hard(for winter) and soft top, I have it on mine) every sex loves it, so it doesn't matter whether your trying to attract guuys or girls.

Weakness:

The soft top can be harsh, especially above 70 mph, you can't even hear yourself think. It is not exactly a feather smooth ride. If thats what you want then look else where. The stereo isn't that great even with the optional sound bar. I highly recomend getting the sport instead of the four banger. I've driven both and the I-6 is much better.

I love my car. It was given to me because I had to commute to school, and the car I had at the time was an 86 Nissan pick up that overheats at any speed over 60 mph, and the speed limit on the hwy is 65. My TJ can easily deal with that speed limit in fact I usually drive at speeds that the NC hwy Patrol probably wouldn't like that much. It's a great car though, especially offroad, I took it for a little light mudding for the first time recently and it performed great. Unfortunately I recently Hydroplaned and bent the frame badly, about 8000 dollars worth. It was my first encounter with a VA state trooper though, wich is always fun. But when I get it back in few days after about two months(egad!) I will find the nearest place to four wheel and have some fun.

Strength:

Value. This is as good as it gets if you only have to worry about taking care of yourself.

Weakness:

I feel that I have addressed the mileage weakness.

I read other reviews and I have a couple of tips if you own 4 cyl 5spd Wrangler and want to improve the mileage.

Believe it or Not, I get over 410 miles in city driving, on a 15 gallon tank; this amounts to a little over 27 mpg ,city, for a Wrangler (not a bad improvement over the 18 mpg city factory rating). All of this is accomplished in the Washington, D.C. area (where traffic flows like slow-moving volcano lava)

If you have a 4cyl, 5spd Wrangler and want to improve the milage, then do the following:

1. K and N air filter, install (I have modified my airbox at the front to flow more air).
2. Dynomax Super Turbo Cat-back, install (Relatively low noise cat-back vs. Borla or Edelbrock. Good for urban areas).
3. Performance Catalytic converter. (also increases exhaust noise slightly)
4. Install new O2 sensor.
5. Install 8mm low-noise plug wires (I use Accel).
6. Install new spark plugs (I am using Splitfire). Gap plugs to .60 (stock is .33-.38).
7. Install Accel Performance coil. A $60 part that allow you to double the plug gap to .60. Much more efficient combustion
8. Change to synthetic fluid in your front and rear differentials, transmission and transfer case (I use Redline fluid).
9. If the climate in your area allows for it, change to Mobil "0W-30" Synthetic motor oil. 4 quarts in necessary in a 4cyl. This motor oil has the best flow characteristics, but it is not right for all climates (I wouldn't use it in the sun belt)
10. Weight: remove the back seat; remove the carpeting (I keep the spare tire on). Run with the top off and use a tonneau cover in the heat.
11. Inflate tires so that they ride at 40 psi on the street.
12. Change thermostat (my jeep was running hot until I changed mine and flushed the system; thermostat was old). Use a stock 195 degree thermostat, nothing cooler like a 160 or 180 which will only hamper performance in this case)
13. To the right of the alternator, my jeep had a tension (?) wheel dragging on the drivebelt. I removed the wheel, expecting that I would later have to reinstall it because the drivebelt would lose tension. I haven't had to reintall it. Drag on the engine is noticeably less.

The aftermentioned involves a lot of work and cost me about $1000 in parts and labor. Again, result for me is 27mpg/ city, driven moderately. Also note that I am using tiny 205 tires, most stock Wranglers run on 215's (mileage would probably be better on the 215's).

I use this jeep off road in Virginia and West Virginia and it performs well in moderate off-road conditions. I conservatively estimate that power has increased by 20 hp after the modification (Basically the power in the 4cyl has gone from "awful" to "adequate").

Top down, doors off, windshield down, 4-wheeling. There's nothing like it.

Weakness:

QUALITY. Aside from the obvious (noise, gas mileage, etc., that just come with a convertible truck with the aerodynamics of a brillo pad), the build quality all around is the worst I've seen anywhere. The engineering is probably decent, as some people get great use from their jeeps (jeeps either have no problems at all or are constantly broken), but manufacturing quality leaves MUCH to be desired.

JEEP = Just Expect Endless Problems

The biggest piece of junk I have ever owned (except for my previous jeep where the rear wheels flew off on the interstate...scary). So far, after 1.5 yrs and 30k mi, I've had the following problems: transmission (5sp) that sounds like a box of rocks (jeep refuses to fix), clutch worn, front diff seal, front steering stabilizer, exhaust leaks, drivetrain vibration, A/C problems, fan motor fail, numerous mystery rattles and squeaks. It's all a result of bad manufacturing quality at DC.

If you get any Jeep, get the extended warranty and personally inspect your truck often, so you can catch all the problems (many) the dealer doesn't, or is instructed by DC to mysteriously overlook.

Jeep, get a clue. You should be able to build good quility stripped down truck like the Wrangler for 20k. It's a shame that jeep abuses owner loyalty for the sake of cutting a few corners and lining the CEO's pockets. It would be such a great vehicle if jeep could just get their act together.

Mileage in this case, durability, no carpeting, rain does the interior cleaning, "WWII-style" 4cyl is ok offroad after mild modification.

Weakness:

Waiting for the 8, risking a swap

A follow up to an earlier review. I stated the modified wrangler I have gets 27 mpg city. I reviewed the figures and it's actually 25 city/ 27 hwy.

(I originally purchased this 4 cyl since it seemed a preferable starting point for a V8 swap).

Anyway, if you have a have a 4cyl YJ/TJ and you think the mileage s--ks, its a problem that can be fixed. See the mods, 4 slots down.

it's a jeep thing ... we could go on for days!

Weakness:

The only thing weak about a jeep is a stock one!

The BEST thing about Jeeps is building them! Put a lift & some 35" tires and you're ready to go! Jeeps are built not bought ... but even stock from the dealer they are the BEST SUV to take out on a trail, very rugged and very capable. We've owned a soft top and hard top ... soft top is easy to put up and down but very leaky in the winter, hard top is a pain in the a*s to store but keeps you warm. DONT buy the 4cyl unless you plan to swap out the engine right away, it's a joke. The 6cyl is pretty good, but once you put 35 inch tires on, you really need to upgrade ... The best thing about our jeep is riding with the top off, getting tan and taking some awesome camping trips / trail rides and going places all the street SUVs can only dream of!
