Weakness:

Fuel economy could be better.

I think the Discovery is being unfairly maligned in this forum. I have found only one problem from the factory - the sunroof switch plate had to be replaced and the dealer did that, no problem. We've put about 2,000 miles on it in a month and absolutely LOVE the car. It is AWESOME. I find it comfortable, it handles well (70mph in curves without a problem), etc. Some of you had problems putting it in 4wd - HELLO - it is FULL TIME 4WD! Some of you think it has a bouncy ride - not on NYC streets - we have the toughest streets in the US and it smooths them out very well. I really cannot find any faults with the car. The fit and finish are luxurious. The engine is the same I had in my Triumph TR8 - basically bullett proof - in fact, this engine was sold to Rover from Buick under pressure from the US steel industry because it is aluminum and outperformed all other steel blocks at the time. Some of you had electrical problems - well your battery will go dead if you don't use it, and that will require a reset of the central locking system. Others of you will take the car into salt water - of course you will corrode your electrical system! If you abuse the machine then it will break, but if you don't abuse it then it won't break. Just to let you know - someone from Brooklyn asked why doesn't a German company buy them - well they DID - BMW who redesigned the Discovery and then sold Land Rover to Ford in 2000 I believe. I have found most vehicular problems are due to abuse or neglect - usually OWNER error or bad service. I have had none so far.

Not Roomy

BUYER BEWARE... If I can persuade ONE PERSON to spend their money elsewhere than I feel a sense of accomplishment. Never ever ever, buy preowned certified used vehicle from LAND ROVER. The 140 vehicle bumper to bumper inspection is a joke and they have no sense about repairs. I took my vehicle in 15+ times in 18 months for various reasons, the last of which is a water leak that has gotten worse since they began repairing it. They are so nice and incompetent it sickens me. I will trade my vehicle in within the year and buy me a BRAND NEW Vehicle, all I am saying is everyting that gltters ain't GOLD...

I bought this car for it's off road performance, as I live on the road less traveled (3000 ft elevation on steep mountain road). The traction control and hill decent control are wonderful for negotiating steep snow covered roads. There is nothing like it for harsh driving conditions, having left Lexus and BMW SUV's stuck as I roll on by, however you sacrifice some on road comfort. If you are using it for around town driving, get the Lexus...if you want to conquer the mountain, there is no equal.

Strength:

One of the best off-road SUV's I have driven. I enjoy the capabilities and handling of my truck.

Weakness:

Service is always an issue, once you are past warranty it seems the vehicle automatically begins to self-deconstruct. I have had my vehicle in the shop 5 times within 6 months. Gas consumption is a problem and electrical and light bulbs are also problematic. I have had to replace headlights and tailights twice. I only have 59k miles and it is a 98.

During the first 50,000 mile I had no problem. The vehicle was under warranty and any problem I had was immediately fixed. However, 9000 miles later I have had all sorts of problems with the vehicle. I just got my driver side window fixed which was off track and a new battery total cost $600. The labor charge is what kills you. I still have work to be done on the vehicle to the tune of $5100. Which the labor is roughly $4500. I used to have a great service guy who knew my name and my vehicle and would often waive certains fees or find coupons to reduce fees. Now I have a company man that doesn't know anything about me or the vehicle. I have been very disappointed with the BILL JACOBS Land Rover dealership (ILLINOIS). I also owned a BMW which had numerous problems which they never fixed and eventually I had to get rid of it only after paying $5000 to them to fix the same problem just a different part. I am going to purchase the new 04 Range Rover but definitely not from them, if I have to ship it from California I don't care and if I have to drive to Indianapolis for service then so be it. They are very rude and it permeates from the top (management) down (service department). The bad part of it all is he owns 6 Land Rover dealerships in Illinois and there are two more however I do not know if he owns them, I am calling tomorrow.

don't know; i like the Brits cause they help in the war with Iraq but from what i hear and for what ive seen with my brothers car, i think the LR ar junk...

Weakness:

gas compsumsion, mechanical trouble all the time on new cars=the more trouble youll have the older the car gets. small cabin space. and so on....

While i visited my brother in St. Paul, MN I was admiring his 2003 Discover, I think is a discover. He boughit used with 25k miles on. In the two week period that i got to spend in his place his truck had to be taken to the shop for repairs in the following areas; the einging was leaking oil from the right valve gasket, the fog ligts weren't working; to my knowleged it was the tirtd time the dealer tried to fix them. The bottom of the truck along with most parts in the einging were rusted to the point that if bolts needit to be replaced;you better used the jaws of life the remove the part and have a new one installed. PS. I have a 98 expedition EB trim with 125k miles and the only think that i have replaced is on Oxigen sensor and the oil every 3k miles. I guess if most people agree that the Land Rovers are a piece of crap! too many people cant be wrong....

4 wheel drive

I purchased my land rover 2 months ago and found a problem on the second day I had it. The speedometer wouldnt work if you hit 70mph, which also meant that the cruise control wouldnt work. Then I go to fill up the gas tank for the first time and it will only take half a tank. About every other time I fill it up, it does this. I took it out in the "rough terain" if you even want to call it that and i was very disappointed with if off road capabilities. It is extremly hard to get into 4 wheel drive, and you get this annoying beep when it is in 4 wheel drive, or at least I think it is in 4 wheel drive, its hard to figure out if it is or not because there is no indicater. And now to top it all off my side window defrosters broke this morning. Besides all that I love it.

Like the way the truck looks

Weakness:

every thing else

I purchased my '97 Discovery from Land Rover New Orleans under the Certified Pre-Owned Program. I had problems with the vehicle from the day I bought it. Apparently the service professionals? at LR New Orleans didn't even bother to look the truck over, as I found problems with the truck the night I brought it home. About three months into this nightmare I was driving across the Causeway (a 21 mile bridge that seperates New Orleans from Mandeville) and during a rainstorm the truck quit on me and I was almost hit by several times by other vehicles on the bridge. I called Land Rover New Orleans and a sales rep met me on the bridge and took me to the dealership while a tow truck towed the vehicle in. The sales rep apparently thought it was funny and laughred about it while proceeding to tell me how well he was doing financially selling Land Rovers. I didn't think it was all that funny that a vehicle that supposedly handle the roughtest terrain in the world couldn't even handle a heavy rain storm on a bridge in Louisiana. Over the next year I had to take the truck into the dealership numerous times for problems with the locks/alarm system, rearview mirror, windows, seals on the rear windows. My favorite was the time I took the truck into Land Rover New Orleans because I couldn't unlock the doors with my remote and when I used the key the alarm would go off. I told them what the problem was and they asked me to come into the service area and the mechanic said there was no problem with the locks. I told him to get into the truck and lock the doors. He did so and looked at me, and then I told him to unlock the doors and get out. He couldn't do it. Anyway, all problems with the vehicle were eventually fixed, but as I tried to explain to the dealer, every time I had a problem I had to take the truck across the lake, take time off from work, leave the vehicle, and drive whatever they gave me; which with one exception was never another Land Rover. Just because you purchase a Land Rover from Land Rover New Orleans does not mean that when you need to have the vehicle worked on, which is often, that you are going to receive a Land Rover as a loner. One time I was given a Metro, if you can believe it as a loner. I got to the point where I became openly beligerent to the staff at LR New Orleans and doubted anythng and everything they told me regarding the vehicle. I even wrote a letter complaining about my experience to the President of Land Rover and got a typical no action response from him. My main complaint about my Land Rover was the indifference and lack of concern on the part of Land Rover New Orleans. I sold my Discovery after 18 months of ownership at a considerable ($12,000) loss and bought a new Mercedes, which to this day I have had no problems with. The only bright spot is that I don't have to deal with Land Rover New Orleans any more, and I would walk before I would deal with them ever again.
