Strength:

Very strong chassis and gearbox - final drives .

Weakness:

Not very well put together , wiring looms and things all over the place (not what you expect from a toyota ) leaks a lot , if there isnt a leak its getting ready for one !!

Well still motoring , had a leak from the steering pump , leak from the transmission center shaft , have a thunk gooing from forward to reverse (when stopped ) , wiring seems to have been thrown into the engine bay regardless of where it lands , result cur wires water pipe abrasion /rubbing , noisy back end -looks like the door is ratleing on its hinges (fixed) drinks gas like its going out of fashion and can climb the tallest dunes . -I Love it at long last a vehicle I can look after myself without too much computer interferance . Next time Ill get a toyota Prado - they stay together better

Strength:

Legendary marque, suburban cachet. Surely the best 4x4xfar, off road only! Spacious interior, ideal for six footers and over.

Weakness:

Thirsty, sluggish, leaky engine.

While the Discovery model allegedly has improved over the years, it's still not the SUV you'd expect for 40k plus. Many minor problems add up to major headaches and all-too-frequent visits to the repair shop. Sure, it's a Rover. It's a powerful and agile machine off-road, but for any other uses (and that includes most of us)it's an expensive and not very practical proposition. Sure, you'll look cool driving to the market and to work, but unless you shop in the Sahara and work in Amazonia, it's all just a mirage.

Strength:

Off-Road Capability Dual Roofs Overall Styling Driver position/Feeling of Security Easy Access (truck appears to be very tall based on driving position but you don't need to climb up into truck) Ownership by Ford and Ford's influence over some of the new features

Weakness:

Somewhat Truckie Ride Side window thickness seems thin Hood too low to check dip sticks (need to bend dipsticks in order to check fluid levels, which is minor)

This SUV is great. I recieved a great deal from Princeton Land Rover (both Sales and Parts - for accessories). I traded in a 1998 Mercedes Benz E320 for this vechicle and do not regret the trade. The Discovery SE drives a little rough (on-road) which in my opinion is expected, since it's a REAL off road vechicle. It took me all of 2 days to become comfortable with the interior gauges, radio, etc. I was also surprised that the driver seat didn't lower and go back further than it's lowest and furthest positions but again something to get use to. Also, the windshield wipers (remove rain rather than clean the windshield) I guess that was it's intended purpose. I could continue to pick out small aspects of the car that could be improved as with any other car. The thing is... you buy a vehicle knowing that every aspect of the car isn't perfect and all cars have some problems/opportunities for improvement (believe you me.... I've had my share of lemons) but the thing to take away is that you must feel overall satisfaction with the car and that's what counts.

I sold it for 10,500! This would be great except that I had over 3k in repairs.

Weakness:

Off-roading. Yes this vehicle sucks off-road as well. If you can keep it running make sure you have a friend with a winch. My 88 Toyota is more capable.

I can't believe I drove this thing 20k+ miles. How did I find the time with all of the repairs? Let's see - the variable speed sensor, caustic fluid coming out of the mirror, every seal and gasket imaginable. You could extract a barrel of oil from my driveway. Did I mention the power steering fluid flowing freely and the transmission rebuild? STAY FAR AWAY FROM LAND ROVER!!!

Model Reviewed: Land Rover Defender 90 Soft Top

Strength:

o Hard to match off road prowess. o Drop dead exotic one-of-a-kind looks. o Open air motoring!!! o Decent highway manners. o No depreciation whatsoever. o Relatively compact and agile.

Weakness:

o Gas mileage SUCKS!!! o Soft tops are fragile, all will require replacing with normal use. o Some dealerships have HUGE attitude problems (Cary, NC and Miami, FL). o Some fellow Land Rover owners have HUGE attitude problems. o Is a guy magnet vs. being a chick magnet. If you are a single woman or gay, this is the set of wheels for you. o Feeble heater, AC is even more feeble. o There is always something (mostly minor) to fix. o Easy for the wife to track your movements (DUH - you're driving a big yellow one-of-a-kind looking vehicle). o If you're Black, you are going to get stopped or followed closely by the police. Trust me, I know this. I drive with my license and registration at the ready.

I have had my D90 almost six years now and am still in love with it. It's the fantasy vehicle that I didn't know I wanted until I owned it. It does great double duty (errands around town - long or short haul weekend get always) and leaves an unmistakable impression (awe and envy) on snobs and off-roaders alike. I have owned six other vehicles (domestic/import/car/truck) and have not experienced a higher level of driver satisfaction. I have even seriously contemplated buying a second Defender - I still might. If you can get your hands on a low mileage D90 (hard or soft-top), DO IT, you won't regret it. If this vehicle isn't the real deal, then why do the U.S. Army Rangers and British SAS use them as their primary light and medium caliber weapons platform? NUFF SAID.

Model Reviewed: Discovery TDI

Strength:

+ Very solid + Direct mechanical injection turbo diesel (so most things can get fixed in the bush) + Low consumption 9.5 - 10.5 ltr/100km (30 miles the gallon) + After 125k km the engine has compression and oil consumption like new condition + All is metric (ex. some body stuff) + Pretty comfortable for a mud-walker + High pull (3.5t)

Weakness:

- Tax, insurance, service pretty expensive - Low initial torque, you need clutch until turbo is up - Only few parking garages will fit the height - My wife likes it as well, so I have to use her FIAT to get to work :-( !

I would not compare it to an SUV! It is a real "All Terrain Vehicle" that shares a great deal of its parts with the LR88, LR109 or LR-Defender. -> No need to worry when it gets rough! (Just watch you thumb :-) ) I heard many complain about the high gas consumption of 4.0ltr petrol engine. Well, my Diesel behaves like a scotsman and the character fits well to the Disco. With additional underbody eservoirs the range is extendable to above 2000km (1200 miles). So I strongly recoment the Diesels between 2.0 and 3.0 ltr. The new 2.5TD5 does not even have a toothed belt to worry about.

Strength:

(+) Competent off-roader. But so are a bunch of other SUV's.

Weakness:

(-) Mechanically UNRELIABLE! (-) Gas guzzler

What a pile of JUNK! Don't EVER get conned into buying this mechanically unreliable piece of crap. The thing was built to last MAYBE 50,000 miles. Beyond that, it is just going to fall apart and COST YOU BIGTIME! Here is a list of things (non-wear related) that happened to me RECENTLY that have caused me to pull my hair out - WITH ALL THE RECOMMENDED DEALER SERVICE INTERVALS COMPLETED! 60,000 miles: Alternator DIED. Got it fixed at a local shop for $450. 65,000 miles: Swivel preloads loose, leaking badly, needed to be tightened. Damn near got killed on the highway b/c this caused a rightward lurch which almost plowed me into an 18-wheeler. A $1,000 dealer repair. 70,000 miles: Oil pan gasket leaked and needed replacing. Got it fixed at a local shop for $350. 72,000 miles: Front wheels squeaking. Replaced front wheel bearings and seals. Got it fixed at a local shop for $300 ish. Okay, maybe this is a wear-and-tear repair...but read on... 74,000 miles: Rear wheels squeaking like a banshee. Replaced rear wheel bearings and seals (which were completely destroyed), a right rear hub, a right rear stub axle, and also replaced a FRESH right rear brake pad because oil leaked on it. My mechanic, who I now am on a first-name basis with, was marveling how I didn't get killed. Oh yeah, here's another $800+ repair. I haven't even gotten to the electrical or door latch problems yet! I freakin' hate this thing which is turning into a maintenance money pit. If you must feel you need to drive one of these things, LEASE it under warranty and pre-pay for the dealer servicing. Then turn the pile of crap in at the end of the lease. If you ever have the misfortune of buying one of these things, SELL IT. BTW, the best and most economical source of parts I've found is Atlantic British (located in upstate New York). http://www.roverparts.com.

looks more expensive than it actually is, good off road power, excellent intirior

Weakness:

somewhat expensive accesories, complicated stereo with navational system

It ia a great truck, the ride still a bit choppy and could be a bit faster, but overall ther is no challenge in any way from other truck. This one is the real thing on road and off road, the exterior is great looks like a million bucks, and the inside is well organize, land rover kept it simple and user friendly. This truck is awesome takes a while to get use to it, so do not complaint for turning radius of poor availability of parts get to know it first then drive hard and you will be fine, remember is not the car but the driver who is responsable, for the rest enjoy the truck where it belongs off road.

Who cares, in the overall scheme of things the weaknesses in the vehicle and dealer support, surpass any strenghts.

Thank god, I got rid of this piece of crap. I took a $12,000 hit when I traded it in, (bought it for 34k, they gave 22k). Got into a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland and the difference is night and day. The Rover with a 4.0 litre, less horse power burned more gas than the Jeep with a 5.2 liter HO 265hp engine. I feel sorry for the person who buys the Rover. The Jeep dealer has the Rover sitting in their used car lot for two months now. Today they called me up and told me that the battery went dead and they can't unlock the super locks on the doors and if I have any suggestions. I informed them that I never had this problem before and they should take it to the dealer if they can get into the truck. I hope they don't break the window, because they may wait 6 months for it to come in. In this day of high reliability, computer testing and design, Im surprised they build this crap and put it on the road.
