Strength:

cargo space, front/rear entry/exit, price, warrantee, acceleration.

Weakness:

control layout, wind noise (automatic transmission)

I bought the 5 -speed DX model of the Tribute. In the class of small, compact SUV''s (Ford Focus, Toyota RAV4 and Honda CRV) it offers more style, and is more economical than its competition. I would strongly recommend you take a test drive. It will make you feel as though you spent more money than you really did!

Strength:

Fun, looks good, storage capacity, quick, nimble.

Weakness:

Break down city! 1) Water hose broke loose at 1500 miles (in my garage) 2) Fuel smell in cabin at 4000 miles 3)Vacuum hose burned through after fuel repair 4) First stall in Oct ''01 5) Loose interior panel after first stall "fix" 6)Second stall in Nov ''01 (Mazda given final opportuity to fix under Lemon law for safety violation 7) Ignition cable loose in Dec ''01 (7 hours to get towed home). All in all my wife is willing to take a beating reselling this to the dealer b/c we won''t sell it to another consumer and she won''t drive it any more.

What a great car to drive. It''s so quick and nimble you feel like your in a sports car - Zoom Zoom. But that''s then end of the good stuff. Unsafe and unreliable! Should have known better than to buy an American made product during the first production year.

Strength:

Plenty of power and good looks.

Weakness:

Stiffer than desired ride, but that''s a normal trade-off for sporty handling.

I have had only one problem with the car. It stalled once while coasting downhill at about 35 MPH. I didn''t take it to the dealer because I know that they can''t fix problems that don''t repeat. If it should happen again I will be at the dealer the next morning. Other than that everthing is great.

Weakness:

Gas mileage

I do love my Tribute, the size is just right. Disappointed in the gas mileage. I have recently took my Tribute in for the 3 time regarding the engine light staying on all the time. I was first old it was fixed, then the light came back on again. This time when I took it in they told me that Mazda having problems with their gas tanks, replaced tank, light has stayed off. I hope this is not a bad sign.

Strength:

Looks, overall handling & power

Weakness:

Other than the stalling problem previously mentioned, only minor problems such as less than advertised gas mileage & excessive brake dust on front wheels.

After waiting for the 2002 model Tributes in hopes that Mazda would work out any bugs experienced with their introductory year model, my wife and I finally purchased the Tribute in late Sept. 2001. Unfortunately, I have just returned from the dealership for the second time in less than a month; on two separate occasions during the past month, our Tribute has stalled out while driving. Both times it has lost power while coasting downhill at about 25-30 mph and attempting to accelerate up a second hill. Needless to say, the dealer (in conjunction with Mazda) was unable to locate a problem the first time, and it isn''t looking much better the second time around. My dealer tells us that Mazda has had several reports of the problem, but that none of their engineers have been able to get a "snapshot" of the problem. My dealer claims to have seen the same problem in a number of Tributes, but I appear to be the first to experience it more than once. While I''d like to think that I''ve just had some bad luck and that the problem won''t occur again, the fact that it''s happened again within a month of the first occurrence leads me to believe that Mazda, and at least some Tribute owners, may have a problem on their hands. Ford has not indicated a similar problem with the Escape, although the problem sounds awfully similar to the ignition system defects on which Ford just settled last month, where cars were stalling without warning while driving. Different ignition system in the Tribute I''m told, but who knows?

Strength:

Love the body style. Vison ability excellent front front, side and back. Love the fact that the rear door,"trunk", opens up instead of out so I can back into stalls and still be able to load it.

Weakness:

In 2 months there was a recall for : wiper link, rear wheel hub, and fuel leak. Car died while I was driving at 50 miles per hour (pcm and eec relay replaced). Wiper links replaced twice. EGR sensor replaced. Loud explosion from under hood, had to be towed due to vacuum hose coming off. If you drive without the a/c and leave your window open the wind is constantly blowing in your ear, not to mention your hair. Needs windblockers on windows.

I would not buy another one! Car was in the shop 6 times for repairs in 1 year!

Strength:

ES MODEL DONE WITH CLASS, EVERYTHING WORKS AS IS SUPPOSED TO.

Weakness:

GAS MILEAGE "SEEMS" A LOT LESS (20-21MPG) COMING FROM A TOYOTA CAMRY (26-29MPG). LEATHER SEATS ARE MORE FIRM THAN I WOULD APPRECIATE. FIRST ORDERED A 2001 5/10/01, HAD TO SWITCH TO 2002 AND IT ARRIVED 10/21/01.

LOOKED LONG FOR THE RIGHT SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN A CAR AND THE TRIBUTE SUV WAS THE SOMETHING WE WERE LOOKING FOR. DIFFERENT, LUXURIOUS, CHEAP...ALL GOOD SELLING POINTS AND TO THIS DAY WE HAVEN''T BEEN DISSAPOINTED. WISH WE HAD THIS WHEN OUR CHILDREN WERE YOUNGER, BUT WE ALL COULD WISH IN REVERESE FASHION. THE TRIBUTE WAS WELL WORTH WAITING FOR AND WE HOPE TO STILL BE DRIVING IT 10+ YEARS FROM NOW LOOKING JUST AS NICE.

Strength:

It looks great on the road!

Weakness:

Besides the review above we have to use a mid grade of gasoline so the motor doesn''t ping above 45 miles per hour.

We now have 13,500 miles on our tribute and it has been to the dealership 3 times to attempt to fix the front suspension noises and the rear grinding noises. All 4 wheel have had to be replaced, however the problems of the front suspension still can''t be located. Needless to say I owned a 1994 Cavalier and never had it in the dealership for problems. Tribute looks great, but we got a lemon that never seems to run right.

I love my Tribute. I came to this website before buying it and looked at all of the reviews. The pros definitely outweigh the cons. It is fun to drive, looks great, and responds well. The best thing is--- I can get four high school basketball players comfortably to practice!! I now hate driving the other family car!
