Strength:

Awesome four-wheel drive system, great off-road and in the snow. Comfortable, quiet ride. Excellent visibility.

Weakness:

Too small for families of 5 or more. The vehicle is too narrow to fit three child seats without squeezing them in. The rear fold down seats are difficult to get into (almost impossible if you have child seats in the middle row).

The Mitsubishi Montero is an excellent four wheel drive vehicle. We had ours in Germany for over 3 years and had no problems with it whatsoever. The engine has a lot of power, but most of it is at high RPMs and is unusable for most driving conditions (on the autobahn you can cruise comfortably at 105 mph). A great vehicle for a family of four, but too small for larger families (which is why we sold ours.

Strength:

Great looking(old style landcruiser) ,tough, utilitarian 4x4, 2dr shortwheel based truck that runs like new. At 140 something hp it still outruns most little geos, civic, and the stupid mini-utes! Manages 100mph. Has 130K, requires little maintenance, and has the basic motor that's easy to troubleshoot and fix.
No need for any lifts to fit my 31x10.5 tires..fits up to 33's
excellent grps on the internet for informal support...http://www.outdoorwire.com/4x4/mitsubishi/index.htm
The girlfriend took a hit in a hit and run(10-20mpg downhill)..fortunately nothing happened..the stock steel bumper and left fender took most the impact. Had it been something else, it would have been written off and the gf would have had injuries.

Weakness:

Gas mileage isn't the greatest, at 19mpg(best) and 11yrs old with oversized tires..can't complain.
A little expensive parts, but at least they don't break down like the american trucks
Not your super aerodynamic modern truck..lol..little wind noise

Excellent value, paid $6K for low mileage 98k. Had it been a 4runner, would have cost >$8000 for a 4banger. Perfect for the Tahoe run and off-road excursions...pretty much goes anywhere. People still stare at it, wondering what it is..pretty unique. Too bad they don't bring in the new ones.(still in production in Korea under Hyundai). If you can find one..last year is 90..get it! check for the fastory LSD and automatic tranny

Strength:

good looks, smooth V6 engine, 4x4 on the fly transmission

Weakness:

high rpm at highway speeds(i.e 3500rpm@80mph), gas guzzler, not a smooth ride(Toyota Sienna rides better)

Despite its faults, I would recommend this SUV if you like the attention it gets.

Strength:

Solid off and on road. Over 200K miles and it's not burning oil yet. Usual replacement of starter, generator, battery. Nothing major.

Weakness:

Pre-90 models did not have much leg room for tall drivers. This was improved.

Paid $17K new. Now they are twice that, but worth it if purchased used. Will be purchasing another, soon.

Strength:

Roomy fast, fun, Huge power sunroof.. Absolutley responsive handling, space for my friends & all my gear, room to change when I spend a day on the California Coast, shower at the camp ground and slip into evening garb for a night on the town.

Weakness:

Interior is spacious and amazingly well designed, but the camel broun color doesn't perfectly flow with the Silver/Black exterior.
Maybe I'm the only one that would ever notice. But now that I've gotten used to it I just write it off as "Eclectick & funky, color mixing".

I am King of the world in my Montero LS, it's rugged enough for my earthbound needs and refined enough to show off my all american good looks.
No Complaints here at all. I think I'll go for a drive..

No Damn comparison!! What is the point of the Rodeo & Sport?? I dont get it, my full size montero has more of evrything with the same gas mileage.! And far better styling.
My Amigo, I must admit was an absolute "delight", with many brilliant and un-expected design features, such as an incredible turn radius, flawless reliability and space enough to move a fridge. But that truck was one third the cost so comparing is not really fair.

Strength:

Great appearance, very roomy, nice features. Side air bags, and dual front. Full size spare with a alloy wheel which matches. Good sound system. Kickass a/c..... Great price

Weakness:

No power seat in the XLS. V-6 and no V-8 option.

One look at this vehicle and I had to have it. There was only one in the state for sale and I got it. The styling is very dramatic over last years Endevor mess. The interior is huge and very comfortable in all the seats. The sound system sounds great and is well balanced. The features are usable and is well equipped. The engine is peppy on the freeway and the 4WD on the fly is easy to use (4H). Overall it looks the best and is the best bargin in its class.

Model Reviewed: Montero LS

Strength:

This is our second Montero, and there were no doubts about it when it came time to purchase. Our experience with our '90 was very good - no mechanical problems, only routine maintenance, excellent traction and handling, and it held its value very well. We drove our '90 for 3 years in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where they typically get 250"+ of snow, and we never got stuck. We sold it to friends here in town, so I still see it running around. After 10 years and 150k miles it still has no rust, and the only mechanical part to be replaced was the power-steering pump.

Our '95 is even better - more features, more room, and more comforts. It has plenty of power to pull my utility trailer or another car, and with the folding rear and jump seats you can carry impressively large pieces of furniture around in it. The engine is basically the same 3.0L as the '90, and most routine maintenance can be carried out by an experienced backyard mechanic (I'll be replacing the timing belt this spring). Road noise is minimal, and does not interfere with the excellent sound system at all.

Some articles I have read condemn the Montero for being too tall and boxy. This is actually the reason we bought this vehicle in the first place! I am 6'3" and cannot fit in most of the popular SUVs because of the low roof lines. In the Montero I have plenty of headroom, and as an added bonus the taller windows give me one of the best views of the road you can get from any vehicle (except maybe a semi). Also, I have never felt like the Montero was too top-heavy or unsafe when cornering.

As far as mileage - I have found our Montero gets 17-20 mpg depending on conditions, which is very comparable to any other SUV on the road.

Weakness:

Both our '90 and our '95 have front brake noise problems. Our '90 squealed, and our '95 grinds. Upon inspection everything looks fine, and braking ability is unaffected. I occasionally have to cross-hatch the brake discs with emery cloth to break the glaze, and then it is fine for a while.

Montero's hold their value very well (most SUVs do for that matter). We have driven this vehicle for the last 2 years, and the book value has just gotten down to what we paid for it! Yes, we got a good deal to begin with, but very few 5-year-old vehicles are still worth close to 2/3 of their original selling price!

We are a family of 3, soon to be 4, and I anticipate that our Montero will serve our needs very well for the next 5+ years. If you are in the market for a SUV, I can highly recommend the full size Montero.

Strength:

Extremely reliable. Decent handling for its size. Very capable on and off road. The All Wheel Drive shift feature is great in rain or light snow. The locking four wheel drive mode works best in sand or heavy snow or mud. You will not be stuck with this truck!

Weakness:

Better mileage would be nice. But I'm not complaining.

My 93 has 172,000 miles and is running strong with ZERO repairs. Standard maintenance only. My 95 has 73,000 and is just as wonderful. Buy them used and they are worth every penny!

Strength:

Spaciousness, Looks, Versatility, Great engine and drivetrain!

Weakness:

Poor gas mileage when compared to my Toyota 2WD pickup; but hey, I guess it's not that bad for a SUV

Paid $31k. A lot of vehicle for the money. We've had it for just over a year and love it! Great vehicle for the family. My wife previously owned a BMW coupe, but is now a Montero convert. The fold-down back seats are very convenient. Plenty of room for a family of 4 to load up and go on vacation. Strong engine, great 4WD system, comfortable, well-built, and safe. We've had no problems after 20,000 miles. So far it's been a 5 star vehicle.

Tested the Montero Sport and 4Runner - there's no comparison, the Montero is more refined than the sport and bigger, more powerful, and cheaper than the 4Runner (better 4WD system too)
