Strength:
The head room, 7 passenger accommodations and the sporty, yet luxury feel.
Weakness:
I have replaced the antenna three times. The antenna mast covering keeps malfunctioning. And requires a replacement every year. Customer Service sucks big time! And did I fail to mention that the cost of antenna replacement is a whopping $200.00! I am overall pleased with the Montero's performance and features. my husband and I initially purchased this suv as a family car. We are very tall and had the hardest time finding an SUV that offered reasonable headroom. Similar Products Used: Ford Explorer. I actually prefer my Montero. |

Montero LS
Strength:
I felt safe in any driving conditions. It handled excellent.
Weakness:
The only weakness for us was the size. We had to go to a bigger vehicle because our family grew in number. (pre 1997 Model) - We were in an accident and because of the weight and construction of the vehicle we sustained minimul damage and didn't feel the impact like the explorer that hit us. I loved our Montero. I keep telling my husband I will have one again someday. I can't wait! |

Strength:
Japenese built qualities
Weakness:
Pretty plastiky interiors as compared to Lexus Our first SUV and bought it for the wife and she loves it too. We just got back from a short vacation trip at Yosemite and this suv did not disappoint us at all. It passed all the tests at this short trip thru the rugged terrains at the park. The kids also like it too which is a big plus since we owned a slightly bigger minivan before (A Chrysler T&C, a piece of jk...). I'll probably post another review after this coming winter 2001-2002 as we plan taking her up the Sierra mountains for skiing trips, that's perhaps a real test for the Montero, isn't it? We'll see. Montero LS
Strength:
The clearance in snow and the overall integrity of the vehicle. I always feel safe in my car and the view in all directions is outstanding. The four wheel capabilities have been tested to the extreme and against larger more powerful 4x4's (Expedition) and the Montero clearly was the winner. It was truly designed as a utilitarian vehicle from the beginning rather then every other SUV that was created to make money from the market craze.
Weakness:
The infamous valve leak or slippage or whatever you want to call it has just recently began on my beloved vehicle. Is there a God in heaven? Is there a simple and relatively inexpensive solution? I really can't say this problem is that bad because the car still runs well but at start up the amount of smoke produced is sometimes embarrassing. t he Montero has been a very impressive vehicle. I have taken numerous road trips around the country with a full load of heavy tools and haven't had to worry about breaking down. It now has 134,000 miles on it and is still going strong which is rather surprising considering the amount of abuse it has seen in it's life. I only wish Minnesota didn't spread tons of salt on the roads every winter. This has made the rust spread around the wheel wells. Now its time to look for another car, maybe another Montero, but I have to say I prefer the looks of the older MOnteros to the new rounded body style. Similar Products Used: I started my car hunt at the Mitsubishi dealership but couldn't bring myself to buy the 2001 model with it's strange geometry. I then looked at something completely different which was the Audi quattro Wagon A-4. This drove really nice and I liked the quattro system but there's no room, it is over-priced and I honestly didn't feel safe in it. I will buy a late model Montero 1999 until they restyle the new model. |

Strength:
4X4 unstopable, strong can pull anything, love the look.
Weakness:
rough ride Love IT!! This is a grat SUV, with very few problems but if you have a problem you better have a good private mechanic. Service center is useless. Rear seats great for small kids (my two boys love them). Similar Products Used: at the time no other suv in it's class offered a 3rd row of seats. beats explores, pathfinder, etc |
