Strength:
I LIKE THE STYLING OF THE TRUCK, VERY RUGGED AND TOUGH, THE INSIDE IS VERY SPACIOUS WITH ALOT OF ROOM FOR YOUR SPORTS GEAR (GET THE BIKE RACK,IT'S GREAT).THE 3.3 V6 ENGINE DOES QUITE WELL ON NORMAL DRIVING.THE GEAR BASKET IS A GREAT IDEA,FOR PUTTING YOUR SWEATY STUFF AFTER A GOOD WORKOUT.AND THE INERIOR IS VERY NICE, NO LUXURY HERE, JUST YOUR BASIC TRUCK-LIKE LOOK, AND THE SEATING, FRONT AND REAR ARE VERY COMFORTABLE.
Weakness:
WELL, IF I HAVE TO BE PICKY, IT WOULD BE OF COURSE THE POOR FUEL ECONOMY,THIS TRUCK LOVES TO DRINK THAT GAS (but I knew that before I purchased it). THEY SHOULD HAVE DESIGNED A LITTLE TRASH BIN FOR YOUR GUM-WRAPPERS, SINCE IT CAME WITHOUT ASHTRAYS. AND FINALLY THEY SHOULD HAVE DESIGNED A STORAGE BIN FOR THE REAR SEAT CUSHIONS WHEN THEY ARE REMOVED. GREAT TRUCK, I LOVE THE WAY THIS TRUCK HANDLES ON EITHER PAVED ROADS AND ROUGH TERRAIN. IT IS QUITE COMFORTABLE FOR BEING DESIGNED BASED ON A TRUCK CHASSIE.I RECOMMEND THIS TRUCK HIGHLY FOR SOMEONE WHO'S IN THE MARKET FOR A REAL "SPORTS UTILITY VEHICLE" WHO'S LOOKING FOR A NO-FRILLS TRUCK THAT IS VERY STYLISH. A MODERN MAN'S TONKA TRUCK. I LIKE THIS VEHICLE. THEN WITH NISSAN'S RELIABILITY, THIS A VERY CHOICE. I GOT THE XE 2WD 5-SPEED WITH ALL THE OPTIONS ON IT. THIS TRUCK ROCKS. AND THAT'S ALL YOU NEED FOR YOUR XTERRA FUN. TEST DRIVE ONE, YOU'LL LOVE IT. Similar Products Used: 1996 CHEVROLET BLAZER (ZZZZZzzzzzz) |

Looks...it looks way better than the 2000/2001's, inside and out. I love the solid ride All the accessories you can get for it
Weakness:
None, really. I just wish I would've waited 2 weeks for an S/C!!, but then I'd really be complaining about gas.... I've had my Xterra for about 8 months now...haven't really had any complaints about it. It's been a great car. The only thing that bugs me is that sucks on gas. I've never gotten over 240 miles to a tank! Also the acceleration could be a little better....but if I had to do it all over, I'd buy another one. Strength:
Great 4wd, well built. Perfect size between the really small SUVs and the huge ones.
Weakness:
The stock tires (BFGs) are the worst tires I have ever had on a vehicle. I can't believe Consumer Reports likes them. The cruise control and rear wiper switches are located in a strange place. The upgraded audio system is not very impressive. What can I say, I love my X. First, You should understand that my last vehicle was a 1976 Jeep CJ-7, so my X is a big upgrade. To put it in perspective, the X drives a million times better, has more power, can stop within a city block (from 30 mph), won't roll after hitting small objects on the road, has a ton more room, and is better built. It will not go every place the 7 did, but I don't expect it to and that is why I have skis, mountain bike, feet, etc. I have not had any problems with it and have already put 20,00 miles on it. It is slower than my friends Jeep Grand but I did not buy it to drag race. Actually, I have been quite happy with the power. I have a manual trany and it seems a much better option than the automatic. Another friend has an X with the auto and it is a real dog. Last weekend I went rafting and I pulled both rafts and frames and all of our gear up Vail Pass and was able to do 55 mph. That was better than I expected and my friend in his 4-Runner, with no trailer, was not able to keep up. As for gas mileage, I get around 19 in the city and 21 on the highway (17-18 when towing). This seems to be better than most but I expect that is because of the manual trany and living at altitude. The truck does have some body roll in the corners but it is a true 4wd and not based on a car frame. Overall, I am very satisified and would buy one again in a heartbeat. It fufills my needs perfectly. Similar Products Used: CJ-7, Scout II, Blazer, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, 95 Explorer, 02 Explorer, 4-Runner |

Strength:
High visibility (for you to see others and for others to see you) He-man looks (where's my chainsaw and work boots)
Weakness:
Front seats are a little harsh for hwy travel, suspension could be a little stiffer to prevent the leaning in crosswinds and curves, Mechanically this has been a very reliable truck. Truck being the key word. So many people compare the X to car based SUV, remember apples and oranges look, feel, and taste different. Compare the X to Explorers, Jimmys, 4runners and Durangos, to get an idea of true comfort, durability, and ride. All of these are hard riding, they are all a little on the slow side, they all give up room to stay in the mid-size SUV class, and they are all fairly durable. Like anything you will find good and bad. I travel the southeast in my X and have found it to be only slightly more uncomfortable than my previous car (Taurus, I could get a soap box out to complain about that vehicle). My mileage has averaged 18mpg on the hwy and 16 in the city. Both of these were within the range listed on the sticker. Remember the big numbers you see are an average, various driving habits and styles were used to determine a range which is listed directly under the big numbers. I carry literature and demo rescue/safety equipment (up to 400 pounds) and still get these mileage numbers. Pulling a long or steep upgrade requires enough accelerator to downshift, sometimes all the way to 2nd gear with the auto tranny. The lack of horspower, you hear about so often, is in the middle to upper range of the transmission and power curve due to the need for torque and horsepower in the lower range for off-road driving. I have not experienced any quality control issues and Dobbs has so far been very easy to deal with and willing to do whatever it takes to make it right. I have put 11,000 miles on my X in 12 weeks and I am very satisfied. Similar Products Used: test drove Explorers, Jimmys, and Tahoes |

Xterra XE Supercharged
Strength:
Looks awesome. Power is fantastic. Price is wonderful. Lots of storage room. Comfortable to ride on long trips. Easy in and out.
Weakness:
I really can''t think of any. If you want me to get really picky I could complain about the gas tank door being on the right side when I''d rather it be on the driver side.....but, thats if I was getting really really picky. We LOVE our Xterra. We were debating on trading our jeep grand cherokee in on another suv or going for a car...in the end we got the suv. I love sitting up high because we can see much more in it. We test drove the not supercharged xterra & I wasn''t too thrilled with the power. We wanted to be able to move when we wanted to zoom!! So, thats when we tried out the supercharged model & well, it was sold at that very instant. An additional 40 hp makes a big difference..& after the sale price and a rebate we ended up only paying $500 for that extra umpf!! I want to tell you to go out there & buy this vehicle but, I don''t want to see them allllll over the road. I like that there are not that many out there right now. People don''t realize the deal they get for the money. Most suv''s are over $30,000 now...or like the RAV4...too powerless for the money. We spent the same amt of money on the xterra as what they want for those puny little rav4''s!! We''ve only had this xterra for a couple of months now..I hope that we feel the same way about it in another year or so. We''ve never bought a foreign car before but, so far this thing is the best we''ve ever had. Its ideal for outdoor type people with the huge rack on top. Plenty of room in the back with the spare tire being under the frame. Gas mileage is what you can expect but, with the supercharger you have to put in the premium gas which costs more. We didn''t know this until after we bought it...It was in the manual. Its not a luxory suv...remember that. You are getting something for off road and camping type things. We don''t have any problems with getting in and out of the back seat. Nobody has yet complained about it. Its very roomy all over and the stereo system is even up to par. The first aid kit is fully equipped....what a nice touch. Again, we love it. Its beautiful. It stands out in a crowd. Its great in the rain without the 4-wheel drive being engaged. No squeaks or noises sooo far. I see others have complained about the xterra. Maybe theirs needs more attention and I hope they use their warranty while they have it. But, we came from a piece of crap grand cherokee.....I would never ever buy a jeep again. Also, another thing I noticed that I love about the nissan is that when you go around turns the suv doesn''t feel top he Similar Products Used: Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.....never buy!! Toyota RAV4....very cute but, only a 4 cylinder and too pricy. Chevy Blazer.....ugly. Ford Explorer..sits too low in the back. |

Strength:
Excellent 4x4 capabilities, Tough looking styling, No nonsense approach to an suv, outstanding resale value(although I will never sell mine!) Very reliable.
Weakness:
Horsepower (has been addressed for ''02, with available supercharged version) small glove compartment (also fixed in ''02) The Nissan Xterra is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I have a 4X4 V6 XE 3 pack. Not only is it very capable off road, but it is very comfortable to take on long trips. I am 6''4", 275lbs and I fit nicely in the Xterra. The stadium style seating seems to create more room for second row passengers as well. There is plenty of room in the cargo area to haul whatever you need. I have taken it off road plenty of times and it will get through just about anything. I have had few problems with mine, and have over 24k miles on it. If you are looking to buy a vehicle to customize, this is what you are looking for. There are an extrodinary amount of manufacturers that make aftermarket accesories for the Xterra. Not to mention all of the organized 4X4 clubs that are available to join. I recommend if you are a 4x4 enthusiast, look at the Xterra. If not, it still might be right for you. |

Xcellent 4X4 system. Having a real transfer case is great.
Weakness:
Could use a little more horsepower. But hey couldn''t everything? Dealership service. I don''t understand why it takes 2 hours to get an oil change, especially when I make an appointment for it. I would do it myself but I don''t want any hassles should a warranty issue come up. I bought the X after having my frontier for 8 months. I can put the whole family (wife and 2 kids) in the X with everything we need and still be comfortable. The off-road capability of this truck is awesome although the stock tires do leave something to be desired. The first thing I would do is swap in a set of 31" BFG All Terrains. They will fit without a lift. Overall I couldn''t be happier with the truck. It''s done everything I bought it for. Similar Products Used: None. The X was the perfect choice. |

Xterra XE
Strength:
Use and practicality for the cost is great, looks pretty cool and distintive. Gas mileage considering the engine and the size and design of the truck is quite exceptable. No surprise there, I can read the mpg sticker.
Weakness:
I don''t like pull and twist parking brake under the dash, I''d prefer a lever between the seats. The interior is a bit narrow and the sun shades are on the small side. I previously had a Nissan Frontier King Cab with a 4 cylinder, 5 speed, and I was very happy with it. With 2 kids, 10 & 13, I needed 4 doors, so I got the Xterra, again with a 4 cyl. & 5 speed. I regularly get 21-22 mpg city, and about 24 hiway. The power is fine, I don''t expect to race, just get around town and some use at work, light offroad some days. We just went camping, the 3 of us (about 350 lbs), about 150 lbs of firewood, the rest of the truck stuffed with 2 48 qrt ice chests, a 3rd similar size box with gear and utensils, table, chairs, tent, fishing gear & 2 duffle bags of clothes. Strapped on the roof was a 13 cubic foot bag with sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, and air mattresses (about 50 lbs). It went great, the 3 of us had plenty of room, mileage dropped to 18.5 mpg, and the truck kept up with traffic easily and still had power to pass on the flats. It did dog it a bit on a very windy return trip going up a hill. For the price, I couldn''t be happier, runs well, decent gas mileage (hey, it''s a brick on wheels, what do you expect), oil changes only so far, very practical and useful for me. I haven''t needed any work done on it, so I don''t have an opinion on the dealership service other than being told an oil change could take up to 2 hours, but I haven''t been there more than an hour for any of the 3 oil changes I''ve had done. Very attractive styling. Quality stereo system (what happened to the Rockford Fosgate??) Supercharged Engine gives engine some pep. 17" Allow wheels with very beefy 265/65R17 tires.
Weakness:
Gas Mileage! Two garage visits already! (Mass air flow sensor) I feel bad for my rear guests having to try to get in and out! I wanted to get my hands on the new Xterra ever since my buddy bought a 2001 SuperCharged Frontier in January of 2001. The pre 2002 models lacked style in the front and were very underpowered. The 2002 model confronted these issues with a more powerful engine and much better front end design. Although the Xterra does have its drawbacks, gas mileage is very bad and I have already had two mass airflow sensor failures, I love the vehicle. It is everything I wanted in a vehicle.
