Strength:

Superior Nissan engineering and build quality.
Excellent driving manners both on and off road (with upgraded tires). Extreemly well thought out and designed truck.
Fantastic value for money.

Weakness:

Stock tires are totally inadequate off road.
None apart from the stock tires.

I chose the Nissan Xterra in preference to far more exspensive SUV's even though I had a budget of $40,000. Test drive all the SUV's I have listed and you will find out why I bought the Xterra!
I am extreemly pleased with the Xterra now that I have upgraded the tires to BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A's, the stock General Grabber AW tires should not have been spec'd on a vehicle that is so extreemly capable off road.
Some owners have complained about the lack of power/gas mileage. I have found the power/performance to be more than adequate. And regarding the gas mileage, I drive my Xterra in every type of driving condition and get on average 22mpg. Remember, the Xterra is NOT Corvette- a Corvette will not get you, four bikes, three friends and four peoples gear to the trail head!

Strength:

Rock solid great looks and value. Lotsa truck for the money. Drives really well and is quite nimble. Does not lumber about like some of the other sport utes. I have several friends who bought suv's (4runners, pathfinders, land rovers, explorers, blazers) and paid SEVERAL thousand dollars more than I did. Cool interior! I love it! Fun on long-distance trips...and all my friends seem to love the stadium seating.

Weakness:

Torquey engine!!! Eeeek! The 3.3L 170hp V6 does not do this vehichle justice! Pity that those of us who rushed out and bought the 2000 V6 Xterras will be punished by witnessing the release of the 2001 Xterra supercharged V6....(sigh). And Nissan, you've GOT to do something about the wimpy lil stereo in the XE model! I am in the process of gutting my stereo for something a little more punchy....i.e. Cerwin Vega speakers and a Cerwin Vega 12in sub powered by a Rockford Fosgate amp.

I purchased my 2000 Xterra XE 4x4 V6 just about a month ago and paid just about $24,000 for it with all available options. Without seeming like a child giddy with Christmas morning excitement, I'd have to say that this is the BEST truck on the market for the money. It has LOTS of space; I've stuffed everything in my Xterra from 2 seventy pound dogs to furniture, to mountain bikes and horseback riding equipment and STILL had room left over for a bag or two of groceries. The primary use for my Xterra is to get back and forth to work and for road trips, but I've found that it nicely accommodates all aspects of my busy lil' life. Bravo, Nissan on a sport ute well built. I love my Xterra and I encourage others in the market to jus' go get an Xterra.

Strength:

I always get a look from the people who payed $10000 more for their SUV. The way the Xterra looks is remarkable. Smooth ride. I had no problem with my stereo yet, though it needs more power otherwise sounds really good. I am 6'5" and just feel a tiny little bit cramped because I have long legs.(Could not even fit into Explorer or Passport) Used to it though. A great SUV for the money. With manual transmission I have no problem passing anybody on the road.

Weakness:

Old pathfinder engine, they should put the new 240hp in it.
Wipers make a lot of noise and leave an oil streak, please email if there is an easy fix otherwise have to take it to the dealership for a day.
Needs a sunroof that slides.

Paid 23600 with everything besides tow hitch, sunroof, 6CD and leather.
If there are any question feel free to email me.

Strength:

I love the truck. The interior is perfect for accomadating all sorts of odds and ends. Style, and shape of vehicle are attractive.

Weakness:

needs more HP!! 4X4 shift located in a bad spot. Keeps hitting me in the knee (OW!!). Stereo needs to be totally upgraded! 2 more speakers, more wattage and possibly a sub. Storage basket is a joke.

I would paid $25,600 for my Black 2000 XE. My CD player froze up on the 2nd day, but after that all is fine. Gas milage could also be better. THUMBS UP!! The Nissan Xterra deserves to be the 2000 Motor Trend truck of the year!!
Also if you are looking for more power try the HKS Super Flow air filter, and the HKS Cat-Back exaust. Both will run you about $650.00-$700.00, it will boost HP about 25-30 and the exaust sounds awesome. Also in the process of oredering a Brush/Grill guard..

Strength:

Like the advertisements say, "Everything you need, nothing that you don't." Looks cool and reasonably priced too!

Weakness:

Right out of the box it rattled and squeaked enough to drive me up a wall. No shut off for individual dash vents, if one is on, they are all on. Rear wiper switch is a pain to reach. Compartments located on the doors are unfunctional, too narrow and deep to use for anything. No place to put the trailor hitch, just have to let it bounce all over the cargo area. Whoever thought it was a good idea to have to REMOVE the rear seat butt cushions to lower the backrests on the back seats was not the smartest guy in the world.

Don't let the hype fool you, the Xterra is problematic. I bought it on the looks and concept alone which are great. Give it a few years to work out the kinks.

Chevy Blazer, Ford Explorer Sport. Weaker engine, obviously didn't feel like driving a solid American car.

Strength:

Function & style. The ability to put a mtn. bike in the cargo space and a kayak or two on top with relative ease is great. Handles well, relatively quiet. Great value.

Weakness:

Currently overpriced in the market. It is tremendously underpowered--the power it does have is geared very low. This initailly isn't too annoying, but overtime it wears on you. In such a huge vehicle, one would expect a compartment or two--there are none!!! The golve box is small and the middle consloe--more of the same. Try to add a CD changer, amp, or store you registration and you are SOL. They added far too many tie-downs and general cargo space without much internal functionality. Although it is a low/mid priced SUV, somethings just lack--besides power, the AC is a little weak (people in the back suffer), and it is ergonomically under-developed. And once again the gas mileage sucks. As has been said elsewhere in the multitude of reviews--even the upgraded 6 speaker stereo system really sucks. I already managed to blow one of the 6x9's in the back--but it never has sounded good anyway. Don't think you will get away without replacing the whole sound system--

I would reccommed the xterra simply because it is fun to be in. The weaknesses can be over looked temporarily for the novelity of driving one. If you don't have an intention of using this vehicle to get out and bike, paddle, etc. you might be better suited in a "commuter" SUV. The Xtrra remains true to it marketing--a return to basiscs and functionality without the bells and whistles. Summary: the Xterra could benefit from coming back the other way toward accessories and improved manufacturing. If I had to buy an SUV again, I would buy the Xterra, and hopefully by the time I need a new vehicle, Nissan will have worked to improve the Xterra to the point I would be excited, not just forced to buy one. If I could afford a Toyota 4-runner limited I would go that route--but that's a whole different price category.

Model Reviewed: Nissan SE Xterra

Strength:

I like that the Xterra sits up high, the rear seats are also raised so passengers can see over head rest. Cargo space is large. Roof rack is great for carrying large items.

Weakness:

The engine could be larger, acceleration is slow. Doors mark up (scratch)easily when getting out.

I paid $26,500 for the SE with some extras. I would definetly recommend this vehicle to anyone - I love it!

Similar Products Used:

Formerly owned Jeep Cherokee Classic, like the Xterra much better. It handles much better and much quieter and no rattles. Feels much more solid. The stereo in the SE is much better than the Jeep's.

Strength:

Fun & has character - doesn't fall into the mold of the "generic" SUV look. Decent value for new SUV and great cargo capabilities. Skid plates, low range, and limited slip differential make for decent off-roading. Rides like a truck, but hey, shouldn't an SUV?

Weakness:

could use more hp (but tourque is decent)- accelaration is only adequate.

A true SUV that looks halfway decent and is fun. Excellent room (especially for tall people) and nice fit&finish (say that for a Chevy Blazer). Those those who don't like it (i.e. Consumer Reports) are usually county club baby boomers who want a leather-clad, spoiled-brat hauling status symbols to drive back-and-forth between Pottery Barn and the country club.

This car is meant to be underpowered and it certainly wont win many races but power for me is ok.You wont get this car for $18000-It cost me $25000 fo XE/3powerpck

Just picked up my car a couple of days ago. I dont regret my choice at all.It really feels like a car I will learn to love.More power, even 20hp, would be great but what can you do. This car ends up being quite expensive in the end.
