A great city car and off road...Wow what a truck/SUV camping twice and handles great on soft dirt and rocky off roads...Can't wait for the snow!Turns are very short and easy to park.Just plain good looks..turns heads
Weakness:
Glove compartment is too small...owners manual is too large..but who care!If you try and turn too fast the wheels get a'little tough but hey it's a truck...Gas mileage could be better. Well there's not much that has not been said about the Nissan Xterra..For me it's the looks and ride plus the head turning from other drivers...I've been stopped several times by people asking what I think...and everyone of them have said...That is one nice looking SUV...I just wish I could get it out for more off road testing...I paid $25,600 I would recommend it if you like being watched and stopped by sad drivers who bought something else and wished they had bought the Xterra...It's a pleasure getting in my Xterra every morning and driving to work wishing for snow... Similar Products Used: tried a ford tried a Toyota...the Nissan Xterra has them hands down...and the price was much better... |

Strength:
I bought this SUV in Nov of 1999 and have loved every second of it. The roof rack is great....i like how beefy it is. I ususally only put my snowboards on it as it is a bit of a pain throwing my bike that high but the height while driving is wonderful. The first aid kit comes in handy and have used it on several occasions...every car should have one. The color (mine is aztec red) looks great and goes well with the trim. I added the rain guards over the windows and made the look even better. I have the XE model with all the available packages....it is not worth it if you do not get the v6 4wd, but having it is great. I added the side molding after the fact to add protection and looks. The SE seemed like a waste of 1000 bucks since the only real thing you get is a useless sunroof and a tape player in addition to the cd player (i only hve cd's). Interior room is great i haul a lot of stuff and have had no worries about fitting everything. The hooks throughout the interior are great (both on the floor and celing) allowing me to sore and hang things eaiser and hold things down. The seats are comfy and those who sit in the back are wowed. very good placement of cup holders...does not get in the way.
Weakness:
On real weakness is the placement of the cruise control and the rear wiper control...no passanger mirror (my girl will have to deal), The grill is not very strong. I was recently in an accident and a car went under the fron of my xterra and bet the he** out of it and my fender. I am ordering a grill guard though so that should add alot of protection and boost the looks. I paid 24,700 for mine being the XE model with all the packages, v6, auto, 4wdr and side molding. I would reccomend it to anyone hta i do not know so taht i am the only one with it (i like being noticed). I am a snow hound and have taken to several mountains this past winter (about 30 days) 4wd is great and handles well in snow storms and deep snow. Like I said I would get a grill guard for added saftey and looks as the front end is a bit mooshy. over all agreat viechle and i love added the accessories as i can afford to make it more unique. Similar Products Used: 1990 Jeep Cherokee Leredo. good suv but bad interior (why would you put the spare inside taking u valuable space, smaller and lower but lasted for a long time and many miles...it did but has not really been updated in a while. |

Strength:
looks, function
Weakness:
Interior material quality, gas mileage!!!!, acceleration considering gas mileage. I am enjoying the xterra so far. However, don't expect to actually find one of the basic models with the under-$20,000 sticker price anywhere. These must be ordered. Like most dealers, Nissan keeps the loaded models on the lot. Still, the power package is worthwhile and it's a fairly comfortable ride. Can't wait to see how it tows a boat. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
The body style is totally off the hook. 4x4 works great. Total outdoorsman car. One of the few cars that were lived up to its reputation. Great choices of colors. Very roomy. First aid kit and bike racks were ingenious. This car is one of the best new suvs out there.
Weakness:
The sound of the engine. Would be 100 times better if it had a chevy engine in it. That would give it about 200 more horses. I paid about 23000 for mine with all the extras and options you can imagine. This car should be sold only to those who would takie it 4 wheeling and not to those yuppies that keep it in the city streets. THey are Suvs and they were made to be offroad....lets keep it that way. If you want a city car go buy a Honda Accord! Similar Products Used: blows away the pathfinder and 4-runner. I would say it is most similar to the Qx4. |

Nissan Xterra SE
Strength:
Looks. Our Solar Yellow Xterra gets more "thumbs up" and we have had no less than five people come running up to it on a dead sprint to ask us about it. Next to the Plymouth PT Cruiser, this vehicle turns the most heads on the road. Looks like it is a cousin of the Land Rover Discovery, at about half of the price. I really like the distinct lines, such as the roof rack, plastic over the wheel wells, and how the tailgate sticks out a bit where the first aid(quite handy) kit is located. The standard factory fog lights and tail light assemblies look good. It is just a fun, sturdy truck ready for an afternoon at the beach.
Weakness:
As stated in many reviews, we could use a bit more power, but it's not a big deal. The seats could be prettier, but if you want pretty you don't really want an Xterra. Gas mileage is slightly below average. It also doesn't have the little things, like compartments for sunglasses or a garage door opener. Maybe these will be ironed out for the 2001 model, but it wasn't worth waiting. We wouldn't get anything except yellow, which was a bit hard to find. Nissan isn't really coming off of the sticker price, because they don't have to. Maybe give it a few months and see how the vehicle begins to do in the long run. Overall we are extremely happy with the Xterra. The sticker was about 24,700, but we had the dealer "give" us the SE package for the price of the XE, which was not in stock. The SE package is pretty shabby for the extra thousand you pay, with a little pop up moonroof that doesnt work unless you take the basket off of the roof, and a "premium" stereo system that doesn't sound like anything special. I might have been tempted to throw on some 17 inch rims, but it wouldn't look right at all. This vehicle wasn't made for the pretty boy who wants a yuppie-truck. I think I can sum up those who compare the Xterra to the 4Runner and say the 4Runner is that much better: 4Runner's have bumper stickers that say "My child is an honor roll student" Xterra's have bumper stickers that say "My kid beat up your honor roll student." Although you wouldn't catch any stickers on mine, except for the one that says "Motor Trend's Sport Utility of the Year." I haven't seen those on too many 4Runners lately. Similar Products Used: Ford Explorer, GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition. All great vehicles, but it's almost too early to say whether or not the Xterra is a winner or not. So far so good. |

Weakness:
Rear Wiper + Cruise Control switch placement. would like a 12V power outlet for passengers in back. Already had to replace the rear differential once (@18,000) It drives and handles very nicely on the Highway and on the Back Roads. If I need the power to pass, I can usually find it without having to drop gears to get the speed. Similar Products Used: Pathfinder (Very Similar), 4-Runner (Not even close) |

Strength:
Plenty of room for a 6'0 235-pound guy, passengers love the elevated rear seats, great turning radius, quieter inside than I thought it would be, automatic transmission shifts just when you want it to. $5000 cheaper than the Toyota equivalent. Fits in a compact car parking space!
Weakness:
Seats don't have much lateral support, a little difficult to get into, rear visibility is a little poor. Bouncy rear end over bumps due to the live axle. Plain plastic grille doesn't live up to otherwise beautiful exterior curves. But these are small complaints. Petty, really. The Jeep Cherokee is often mentioned as competition, but I didn't even test drive one, and didn't ever consider buying one. Nissan's reputation for quality won me over, while Jeeps are notoriously crappy (the fact that the Cherokee has not been significantly upgraded for 15 years is proof enough for me.) To me, the Cherokee is in a class by itself... a 15-year old class that no one in their right mind would buy into. As quality, room, ergonomics and aesthetics go, the Xterra is much closer to a 4Runner than a Cherokee. (Car and Driver magazine compared the two and found the XTerra a better vehicle, despite the fact that the Cherokee has a bigger engine and is faster.) Similar Products Used: 4Runner - nice but too expensive. Explorer - not particularly impressive, also more expensive. Why do people buy them? I have no idea. |

Nissan Xterra SE 4x4
Strength:
A well built, great looking, and versatile machine. Amazingly good handling and brakes for an SUV. Very solid and quiet also. Plenty of interior room and comfortable seats.
Weakness:
My dealer sucked! Headlights could be better. The SE interior is ugly, while the XE is better. Sunroof is a joke. The stereo system is cheezy. Backup lights not bright enough. Rear bumper can't handle even the smallest of impacts. A little more power wouldn't hurt! About $27K. Equipped with trailer hitch (not from Nissan), front tinted windows, part of the carbon fiber trim package, as the dealer screwed it up and some pieces don't fit well, so I'm replacing the whole upper instrument surround, minus the carbon fiber in that area. Overall, the Xterra is a great vehicle at a great price. I highly recommend it. If I were to do it again though, I'd get an XE with the upgrade packages for the better interior fabric and lack of the lousy sunroof. Also, skip the carbon fiber trim and the front deflector shield, as it causes too many airflow problems. This vehicle is for those who don't want to worry about getting dirty or who actually wants to go off-raod. It's not for the typical SUV driver who wants luxury and not utility. Strength:
Great look and quality of workmanship. When I close the door it feels and sounds like my Dad's Mercedes 500sc.
Weakness:
Gas mileage and the cruise and back wiper buttons. I've taken this truck camping in the mountains several times and I just cannot get the thing stuck. Believe me, I've tried. Had to tow my buddy's CRV out of a snow drift. It was fun plowing through the drift, doing a couple of doughnuts then backing up to his bumper to pull him out. If you need a truck that you can take out in the back woods this is the one...it's not just a truck it's a piece of survival equipment. I'd recommend this truck to anyone.....everything is functional and the interior is just fine. If anybody who does serious camping or outdoor activities needs more luxury or fluff than this they probably have a "Soccer Mom" sticker on their current vehicles bumper .
