Strength:

Great looks and I love the raised rear passenger seating

Weakness:

Needs smaller owners manual or bigger glove box. Gas milage could be better considering it's a V6.

Paid $23,700 and I think it's priced great considering what most of the SUV's are priced at. I would recommend it to anyone shopping for a new vehicle. And people "DO LOOK"

Tested a Ford Explorer and it drove like a "cheap ride". Xterra won hands down!

Model Reviewed: Canadian 5-spd (like US XE w/ all 3 pkgs)

Strength:

Looks (both the looks I get and the way it looks), interior space for passengers and gear

Weakness:

placement of rear wiper control and on/off button for cruise control

I paid MSRP in Canada (just under $$29K Cdn) and I am EXTERMELY happy with this vehicle. It looks great (especially in Solar Yellow) and performs well. I've never had so many strangers walk upto me and ask me about it.

I used to drive a Honda Civic (which we packed to the gills going camping, etc.) and the space available in the Xterra as well as the power available from the engine are like "night and day" compared to the Civic. The 5-spd is smooth and precise and the clutch is extremely light for a vehicle this size.

I have extensively driven a friend's 4Runner (and he has driven my Xterra several times) and feel that the Xterra "seems" lighter and better geared (especially in 1st and 2nd gear).

We recently got the interior bike rack and can easily position two bikes in only half the cargo space leaving lots of room for more gear. With a few more fork blocks, I think I could get 4 bikes back there.

The packaging in Canada is due to the demographics and the lack of numbers (population) "north of the boarder". We only have one model available - essentially a US-spec XE will all three packages. The only real option is which transmission you want.

Model Reviewed: Nissan

Strength:

Body regidity and durability. Nissan quality and craftsmanship. With respect to SUV costs, this is definately the biggest bang for your buck.

Weakness:

Engine power. Torque is okay but all out horsepower is definately needed.

Because of the generally high concentration of goods/services availability within the Southern California market, I received a pretty fair value for my SE 2WD automatic. Fully loaded with more options than I need, I paid $23700.00. For the value conscious SUV shopper requiring only the essentials and little frills, I highly recommend the XTERRA.

Strength:

Great Exterior Styling
Comfortable seats, plenty of room for cargo, good handling and ride quality.

Weakness:

Nissan completely missed the mark on the quality and fit of the Xterra's interior. The seats feel and look like they came out of a base model Saturn or something....the dashboard has unwelcomed placstic feel and look to it. the lines inside are very harsh and makes the interior feel crude and uncomfortable. I'm not saying they needed to overboard with leather and wood (after all, that's not the intent of the Xterra)...I'm just surprised that Nissan let this car into production with the interior looking the way it does. My suggestion would be to borrow some more things from the frontier or crew cab and incorporate them into the Xterra.

I would hold off until the 2001 models are out and see if Nissan makes any interior improvements...at least by that point you'll be able to touch a 2000 closer to dealer invoice and justify the cheap interior.

Strength:

Loads of interior room, confortable ride and rugged good looks.

Weakness:

The automatic transmission dose not provide good acceleration. The shift points are to high even with O/D on. On the 5th day the CD player broke on. The roof rack, although good looking, is a little weak with an 125 lb useful load.

I would recomend the Xterra to any finance conchice buyer. who leads an active life style.

Strength:

Tough truck! I have gone offroading, skiing, hauling other vehicles, on long trips, just about everything and this truck doesn't stop! It has good handling, decent gas mileage (I have over 17000 miles in 6 mos) and good solid constructiion. Cargo room is great, it cleans up nicely, and yellow is definitely a cool color.

Weakness:

Dealerships. Price gouging and pretty much lame service. I found one haven in Marlboro Nissan in Marlboro, Mass. It can be a bit bouncy if you are sitting in the back seat. Lights don't turn off with vehicle.

Solar Yellow 4x4 XE with Sport, Utility, and Power package. Paid 25000. Would have paid a bit more. It's a great truck. Perfect for my lifestyle!

Strength:

Look and feel are great. People ask me about it all the time and I do not have one bad thing to say. It drives like a nissan car. Of course it's a truck so it has a stiffer ride but quiet and comfy too. I got 6k miles on mine and it's fine. Mileage about 18/20 hwy for me. I do not take it in the woods or anything but I load it up with video equipment, cameras tv's lights and so on and it is great.
My first SUV and I walk out every day and see it and I still love it. Good A/C and heater too. Cd player is killer.

Weakness:

Not many.
When I bought mine they had a mini-shortage that drove prices up but I kept bargaining and finally got a fair deal.
I think the V6 has plenty of power for me but towers of huge boats or trailers might want another vehicle, and that's a given. I am probably an average user too.

I have ridden in a Toyota Limited, Toyota 4runner, a Jeep Cherokee Country and my Xterra and I must say I like the Xterra the best.
The Toyota is overpriced for this size of vehicle. If you drive an Xterra it will remind you of all the nice things about Nissans in general. Good engineering and useable amenities. I don't need leather.
I paid $21,200 for an Aztec red XE, 5sp, CD, V6. Sport and utility package. No sunroof or rubber stripes on the sides, no big deal. I had a sunroof on my 240sx and hardly used it. You'll pay about 1k more for automatic.
If you are like a lot of other people and want a fun, dependable, rugged on and off road vehicle, for the money, and I did my homework for months, it rocks.

Regards, Steve

Jeep Cherokee. My brother has a 95 Jeep country and it does not even compare. Boxy and lower, the spare tire is in the back which takes up room and it rides bumpy but has a little more powerful engine. Ny friend has had many Toyota 4runners and I rode in two of them, no big deal.

Model Reviewed: /Xterra XE

Strength:

Its solid off-road. Love the standard BF Goodrich tires. I tested this truck in the upstate NY winter and it handles snow wonderfully, as long as you keep it in 4-hi. 6-cylinder is a must if you plan to buy this vehicle. It handles the city traffic very well. Can't say it corners on rails, but for an SUV, its pretty impressive. Great rack.

Weakness:

Please Nissan, get this HP at least up to 190. Gas milage could be improved. If you want to hit over 70 mph on highway, you'll feel the engine working.
What about a rear hatch release??
Needs a bigger glove box. I can barely get the owners manual in it.
A push bar in the front would be nice.

For the money this is a great vehicle. If they improve the horse power will the price go up is the question. They plan on bumping up the pathfinder HP well above 200 next year, so they should at least get the xterra up to 190. This vehicle has a very solid feel when you drive it. I'am a pretty hard driver, but I have no fear to push this vehicle to its limit. I have taken it off-road and you just can't get this truck stuck without wrecking it first. Its a little tough to clean, but when its shining the Aztec Red looks fine. Its a fun truck to drive, but if you plan on putting it in 4WD for a long time, you better make sure there's a gas station in the woods.

Strength:

A quiet and smooth driving vehical. Tough enough to handle the crapy roads in Alaska. Handles great in the snow. Worth every penny!

Weakness:

No major weaknesses. Drive it and you'll love it.

A fun truck to drive! It will do what you need it to, and then some. Unless your crazy you won't be sorry you bought one.
