Strength:

Reliability, 175,000 miles and still has original hoses, belts(except for timing belt). Original battery lasted just shy of 8 years, that's right I said eight years. Put new brakes on at 121,000 miles, duh, did I say reliable? Vehicle has always been garaged when not in use.

Weakness:

Larger turning radius than I'd like (factor when offroading).

This thing is a "Beast". Bought with 11,000 miles on the clock from the dealer and have owned it for 11 years now. Can't say enough about its reliability. I use it on moderate to difficult 4wd-only roads in the Rockies on a 200+ miles/year basis every year I've owned it. I use BFG All-Terrain tires which cause a little stiff riding on pavement due to their stiff side-wall rating, but they excel off-road. I have manual lock-out hubs now instead of the automatic locking hubs it came with (replaced at 62,000miles). Manuals are much better for off-roading purposes. Still has its original Freon content, unlike the Blazer which had to be recharged every year. Dealer replaced head gasket at 121,000miles at no charge even though it showed no sign of needing it but since there was a warranty on it they thought it would be a good idea. I'd give this vehicle 10 stars if I could. I recommend it to everyone looking for an SUV, four of my friends own 4-runners and are equally in awe.

Strength:

Excellent Quality, not a single problem yet. Decent mileage compared to other SUV's in it's class. Great looks. Haven't taken off-road (only snow)..yet. Roomy interior for compact sport-utility. Probably the best true compact SPORT-UTILITY out there. Just read everyone else's review its the shi*.

Weakness:

Since it's an SUV, expect worse gas mileage that other vehicles. Ergonomics are kinda boring. Not as "luxurious" as it may seem,
more of a "utility" vehicle. This vehicle seems like it could
be very capable off-road. I noticed that the ride quality is not that
good, and often gets annoying on long trips. This car is pricey and its
hard to find a Limited model with the options you REALLY want. Since it's a sport-utility, expect acceleration to be kinda slow. It has a torque engine, but revs kinda slow. Expect to pay more for maintanence since it is a sport-utility, but dealer service is pretty good where I go.

Overall, I like this truck a lot. It's fun to drive in the snow, and is very reliable. Expect a rough ride as this is not a luxury vehicle. Acceleration is average, not that bad. The 4wd drive system works well, but I've only used it in the snow. Interior ergonomics are kinda boring, expecially considering how much you've paid for this vehicle. It's look great, is relatively quiet and roomy inside. A great truck.

solid body, looks good, good AC and I get allot of complements. no problems just fill with gas and change oil...very reliable!!

Weakness:

ac is blocked when placing a cup on the cup holder. gas tank is too small, which can result visiting the gas station often.

overall I am very pleased with my 4Runner. It has performance you can count on very reliable. I had mine since memorial day of 1999, and never had to replace a thing. besides oil and gas!

Strength:

The first thing that I can say about my 4-runner is that it looks real good. The ride is smooth for a SUV. I pull my 3000+ lb. boat and had 500+ lb. in the back of the runner it performed fine. Holds it's value. Last forever.

Weakness:

Price is a little high for what you get. Could use a little more power and a little more room in the back seat.

2000 sr5 with leather, travel pachage, moon roof, and standard trans. All around this is a great SUV for on the road or off. Take it down to the beach all of the time. Have no problems. Had alot of complements on the way it handled on the beach. Already pulled 6 Explorers, 2 Crv, and 1 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I love it

Strength:

This truck could pull a house off its blocks. The reliability continues to impress me.I love the huge sunroof.I have had no engine problems whatsoever with the exception of the recall on the headgasket which was covered and given a loaner. Its attractive and handeling is great. It is a very safe truck.

Weakness:

A couple of things but nothing that really makes me dislike the truck ,infact ,I love it but ,there is one problem ,its not a
Land Cruiser. That is what I am working towards. So the following applies:
The 4runner is too narrow. There should be an armrest for the driver. The passenger space in the rear is pretty compact if you have tall friends.
Like I said earlier the engine could pull a house off the blocks but from a racing start it does not offer much.Although once you are going youre fine. There is no rear air.The gas mileage could be improved.I currently get12-14mpg.A/C needed fixing once.Since then it has been fine.

I would recommend this truck to anyone. It is safe, reliable, tough yet refined. One thing to keep in mind is the size of the cab .I am 6'2 and there is ample room for me if my seat is all the way back. However if your friends have to sit behind you they will be crampt. There is plenty of cargo space to work with.

Strength:

Toyota reliability, never had any problems, lasts forever, incredible style, awesome off-road (tied with the Jeep in first place in offroadability in a recent magazine review), plenty of power, great handling, well built, comfortable, has one of the best crash test ratings, can make it your dream maching w/ modifications, already incredible w/out mods, gets me some good looks from others, especially girls :)

Weakness:

Only a few, terrible place for cupholder (fixed in 1999), can slide while braking hard (coming up w/ solution), and rough ride (can be EASILY fixed with new shocks, which aren't that expensive, but its built for off-road, what can I say).

This is actually my first car, I am a student at a preparatory school where the students own Mercedes, BMWs, Lexus, Infinities, etc, and everyone at school who has seen it still are so incredibly jealous of it (although the 4Runner wasn't much less). I have compared it to other SUVs on the market, it doesn't get much better than this. You can't beat Toyota's reliability and quality, and you can find few better off-roaders than this. If you are looking for an SUV that drives like a car and is for everyday people hauling (aka "Soccer Moms"), this might not be the car for you, but it is for you if you want a REAL SUV, a great off-roader, or just want to own a truly impressive SUV, you would LOVE this car, you can always get softer suspension for it and make it a little more carlike. In conclusion, this is one of the best SUVs out there as far as I know and would recommend it to anyone, unless you are a soccer mom :).

Strength:

Solidly built. Toyota really pay attention to details. No cutting corners. This is evident on paneling seams and how they seal corrosion prone areas. (Jeep and Ford definitely fail this criteria). Active Trac combined with Vehicle Skid Control gives you confidence when driving in slippery roads(specially in snow). This was not available on previous years models(only on Land Cruisers). The ground clearance is the highest in it's class(A must for an SUV for me). Rear window retracts up/down-good for pets and summer ventilation.

Weakness:

15 miles per gallon -city. Breaks too soft 'cause of the Active Trac and Vehicle Skid Control(which are definitely plusses specially in slippery situations). Bumpy ride

Paid $30900 which included options: SP, GI, RH, SR, V5 & DR.
I love the truck. Definitely made for realiability. Solid feel. No vibration. If you want an SUV that will last, get a 4Runner.
Ground clearance is one of the selling points for me. plus for deep snow and off road driving.

I didn't like the job that the dealership service department did on spraying the under coating. Lots of over-spray. I could have done a better job myself.

Weakness:

horrible gas tank(too small), doors are too flimsy (have to reopen and close again with force to actually close the door), horsepower is sh*ty and I can't believe Firestone tires were put on this car.

I had done 3 months of research to purchase a 1999 Mistubishi Montero Sport with all the trimings. But unfortunately the dealer didn't see things my way. So my next choice was a 4 Runner. Since I knew the great expectations of a Toyota, I thought the 4 Runner wouldn't be this bad. Since the day I drove off the lot, I have had stomach aches because this wasn't what I wanted. I live in an area of CA with nothing but mountains and I have to drive 45 min to an hour to work on unpaved roads. Since the first day of driving I have noticed how it takes me to put a hole in my floor to drive up a hill. Since the gas inflation, I have to fill up my 2 gallon tank every other day. And the tires, should I talk about the tires. I have had to replace the tires 3 times in the last 6 months. The first time I suddenly notice a flat on the rear driver side and immediately fixed it, thinking nothing about it. At the same time I used the spare and put the fixed tire in the spare's spot. I had the car maintenanced and had the tires rotated. Two weeks later, while traveling down the highway at normal speed (70 here in Cali), the rear driver side tire blew into pieces. Thank goodness for the newly fixed tire. I bought another tire just in case this happen again. Got the tires rotated and guess what? Just two weeks ago, the same side tire went flat.

I do have good things. It is roomy for me, I like sitting high and it's nice looking. I don't want to talk too bad about it, because you know that cars have feelings too. So...we'll see if it stays with me for life or I'll sell it and stick with my first choice.

Strength:

Very tight riding machine, ok torque, great snow & ok off road handling, good panel/control vision, comfort in front, good turning ratio, smooth auto shifting, looks great, dependable, not one repair at 110,000 miles, electric rear window allows air great air flow with front open, factory hitch & wiring, independent control backseat heat and very mechanical sound for a 4x4 SUV.

Weakness:

Very little take off power (ENC button helps raise the RPM’s before shifting on automatics, thus better take off speed, but harder on motor), low 17 mpg for its slow take off speed, little back seat space, tight under hood makes for tedious maintenance.

If you need the back seats and the great looks, then yes get the 4 Runner and love it like family, it’s the most reliable SUV around. If you do not need the back seat buy a Toyota Tacoma x-cab PU for mph and storage or T100 x-cab for that temporary seating for 4 people.
