Strength:

The strenghts that I've found so far are the Interior controls and overall layout. My truck is a sigle cab short box fitted with the 5.3 liter which gives my truck a good power/weight ratio. Handdles pretty good for a truck. Also gets pretty good mileage.

Weakness:

Some of the weaknesses that I've noticed are squaks and rattles coming from the box whenever going over uneven ground. The windows seem to go up and down rather slowly. The power steering makes a strange noise whenever I turn. One of the biggest weaknesses howeve, I think, is the Speed limiter which only allows you to top out at 98MPH. This can get to be very annoying.

Overall I think that my Silverado is a strong performer. I love doing smoky burnouts in parking lots(chicks love that) As of yet I haven't had any major problems but then again I guess only time will tell. Would I recomend a Silverado? I would definetly recomment a Silverado considering it's strong performance and high resale value. However, I would strongly recommend the Ford Lightning provided you have the money to afford it.

Model Reviewed: Silverado 4X4 5.3L

Strength:

A true full size truck.

Weakness:

I bought this 2000 4X4 new in December of 99 and got rid of it in June of 00. The truck had more squeaks rattles and leaks than all my previous vehicals combined. The integrity of the truck was a joke. The sevice dept. of the place I bought it from was also a joke. Every time I brought the truck in I would get it back with the same long list of problems. I traded it in on a 2000 Tundra and am glade I did.

DON'T buy this truck!!!! I paid 32.0K and got totally porked. If Chevy said I could have another one for 3.2K, I would say keep it. I'm not sayiny the Tundra is the only way to go, it just happened to work out OK for me.

Tundra 4X4, the Tundra is smaller than what I wanted in a truck but as far as quality there is no comparison.

Strength:

Has good pickup speed, dependable, looks good

Weakness:

not too good on gas, but its a 350 and that what I had expected

I have only had to change the fuel filter belt, and alternator. And thats it. I haven't had to even as much as change a light bulb other than what I have listed here. When I bought it it had 32,000 miles now it has 111,000, and it still runs great.

Strength:

5.3L motor had plenty of go, and the rest got up and went...

Weakness:

How much time do you have? First time Chevy buyer + 100lb., 26 yr. old female= the nastiest combo for Dealer Service Department ever! Had to be towed 2 times in first week- faulty Passlock system. Rear leaking window in service 6 times, never fixed, window replaced- still not fixed. Mirrors corroded, windshield bubbled, ball-joint bad, mystery clunking never resolved, 4WD stuck, in service 12 TIMES IN 11 MONTHS!!! The list goes on and on. This last time around in was in service for 3 WEEKS! I lost all confidence in the vehicle- it had 5,500 miles on it and I had it less than 1 year. I traded it in on this Tuesday while it was still in service. I got a 2001 Dodge Ram 4X4 Off Road!

Sucks sucks sucks. The color should have been Bright Lemon Yellow instead of Pewter Metallic! The worst experience ever for a first time buyer, first time Chevy owner. My whole family drives Dodge- now so do I. And the key word is "drives," my Chevy was towed more places than it was driven to.

Similar Products Used:

The Ram has 275 tires, the Chevy 245. The fog lamps are huge, the front end doesn't sag, no annoying Daytime Running Lamps, sits up high in the sky, decent mats, huge interior, cup holders that hold, a decent sounding exhaust and an appearance that looks downright bad to the bone.

Strength:

Love the ride and feel of this vehicle. We use it a lot for camping as well as a kid-hauler for all the usual family stuff. Top points for room, and carrying ability.

Weakness:

Rear main bearing failed early, resulted in having to replace engine at 90,000 km's. Four radiators (YES 4!!!) due to leakage. Radio does not work, 4 wheel related items have failed, tires were horrible.

Would never recommend this vehicle, even to my worst enemy. It is a piece of junk. WAKE UP General Motors!!!! The experience of having owned this vehicle and having tried to keep up with repairs was bad enough, but what really hurt is the manner in which I was treated as a GM customer, when I went to the dealer with a problem. As a byer, the only recourse is to spend my dollars elswhere, and GM has made that an easy choice for me.

Drove a 4Runner for a while, although smaller it did the job and it smacks of quality. Did not have it long enough to compare long-term results.

This truck lacked quality control checks by GM. I personally do not have many good things to say about this truck. I had this truck 2 Days off the Show Room Floor and the Rear windows started leaking. In rapid succession a host of ailiments be- failed this wonderful work of art. From the engine noise on cold and hot starts to the replacement engine approved by GM. The new replacement engine has the same problem, high end noise around the valves- Transmission Slip- Rear End clunked and bang- Message Center failed- Running Lights bulbs had to be replaced twice(expensive bulbs) Suspect this truck has electronic problems. Steering Column started making a strange clunking noise, (Service Bulletin) Never notified By Chevrolet, expensive item to replace. Leaking front shock.Vehicle can be tough to steer, acts as if running on a flat tire. Driver side window jump of the track twice within 2 months. This truck in my opinion lacks integrity. Not very dependableExpensive vehicle with all of the options. This vehicle has spent many days at the shop. My next stop is Washington Lemon Law. The only highlight has been the Service Department at Glenn Grant. I know many of the Mechanics and the Service Manager by First name. Choose not this vehicle you will be sorely disaapointed around the 12-17 KM Mark. And take no verbal promises, have all promises put in writing. I will be visitng the Toyota Dealership.

Model Reviewed: Silverado 1500 LT Ext Cab

Strength:

What's not to like? Subdued, yet distinctive styling - still looks like a truck should, I think. Best extended cab room of any fullsize truck. Love the 4-wheel antilock disc brakes; best brakes on any vehicle I've ever had. Rides like it's on rails, especially compared to Dodge Ram. Superb comfort with leather in LT trim - basically a Tahoe with a pickup bed. 5300L V8 gets surprisingly good mileage (again compared to Dodge Ram) for a 8-banger that really moves! And the fact that Chevy added the 4th door for '00 is the icing on the cake!

Weakness:

Picking nits here; haven't had it long enough yet to find any "real" problems, if there are any, but... a standard bedliner would have been nice. Also how about some decent floormats for this price? Throttle response a bit soft outside of the powerband (low RPM) in OD. That's about it.

Lucked into a demo with 2K miles. Was therfore able to negotiate dealer down to $25,500 from a $29,965 sticker (about $1K under invoice, incl. $500 rebate). For anyone in the Atlanta area, I would highly recommend John Smith Chevrolet in Smyrna - Steve Moore had my deal wrapped up in 5 min.! Easiest vehicle purchase I've ever made. Only had the truck a week so far, but would enthusiastically recommend it already. It's ride is very stable & responsive at any speed, stops on a dime, and doesn't drink as much gas as other V8 trucks (although it's not exactly thrifty on gas either - what fullsize truck is?). A big thumbs up here.
