Chevy Silverado Z71 Shortbed
Strength:
You sit up nice and high, and the 4 wheel drive makes the Nebraska snow a piece of cake--it's like a tank, un-stoppable. It looks great and runs great, and chicks love it.
Weakness:
None, dont even go there dude. I love this truck. I bought it new and now have 27000 trouble free miles on it. The power from the 350 is awesome. I have never hauled anything with it, I dont need a truck, I am just a truck lover. It's my daily driver. This truck looks hot and runs hotter. Gas mileage has been a pleasant surprise, getting 15 in city and 18 on the highway. Did I mention this baby flies? Out-running a tornado on the interstate outside of Grand Island Nebraska I hit 110 easy, with plenty of guts left yet. It rides like a truck, and thats what makes it fun, yet you can go still go long distances without tiring. This truck looks great. Nothing beats the style of a shortbed pick-up. My wife has a mini-van for people-hauling, the truck is for me. It still makes me smile every time I drive it. Similar Products Used: I traded a 1990 Ford 4X4, that was a darn good truck too, but I like my Chevy better. Chevy rocks!!! |

Strength:
Powerful, good gas mileage (21mph on hwy), comfortable ride, great A/C (important in Texas), pretty well thought out
Weakness:
TRANSMISSION, TRANSMISSION, TRANSMISSION, its a piece! on both my '99 with a 4.8L and my '00 with a 5.3L the automatic transmission is a big piece of poo! They can't pick a gear and when they do they slip if you are on the gas too hard, neither of the two exceeded 42k mi. and were not driven hard, but both had problems. Decent truck. Lots of power out of the 4.8 and 5.3 (I had both, a 99 and 00) I don't think I'd buy annother one because of the transmission though. They don't shift right and just gave me the feeling of cheapness. It would try to grab 2nd really hard but then slip a little. Sometimes the shift pattern would go "1st, pause, 1st, slam into 2nd" This occured on both models. More disturbing was that every now and then when I would stop at a light or sign or whatever and take off, it would very sluggishly take off in 2nd like it forgot to downshift when I stopped, then when I gave it a little more gas it would slam into 1st so hard that it would usually break the tires loose. This also happened on both models. Engines seemed fine, good gas mileage (21 hwy on both), excellent power, didnt use any oil. ABS is DANGEROUS if you are slowing down quickly and any one tire hits so much as a pebble your abs is now engaged and you are NOT stopping unless you take your foot off of the break and re-apply, just hope you have enough room. A bit of wind noise, but not too bad. Similar Products Used: ford f150, more powerful, more comfortable, better a/c, I think they look better, but unfortunately fords come with transmissions whereas chevy's come with a big alluminum case filled with mush. |

Strength:
great power and acceleration. Rides like a dream and is quiet as a mouse. nice sound system and killer body styling. I love the big boxy look of all the chevy trucks up until the 2000. Push button 4 wheel drive is awesome and the 4 lo will damn near get you out of anything-was up to the locks in water and pulled right out and went back for more. put meatier tires on it and just made the truck look even meaner. i like the ease of the steering and it handles wonderfully. all round great truck. Not bad gas mileage either with about 18 hwy and 14 street.
Weakness:
Transmission- at 85000 miles going 75mph on the highway the whole thing crapped out on me spraying fluid and peices of metal all over my fresh coat of wax Not a cheap fix either at a meer $2000 for a new one. Then it started shifting hard from 1 to 2 after the initial repair so I took it back to the dealer. another $140 for a preasure regulator that wasn't replaced the first time. The bad thing is that they have to drop the whole tranny again to get to it. BUMMER! I give this vehicle a 4 star rating. A decent truck that until recently has been very dependable. Similar Products Used: 1999 dodge ram v10 1987 dodge ram 318 minus the recent tragedy mine is better |

4-wheel disc brakes, stiffer frame but still rides descent for a three quarter ton truck
Weakness:
Lack of torque for pulling my trailer.Chevrolet claims that this truck is rated to pull a 8300 lb. trailer which is hogwash. At 65m.p.h. on the interstate in third gear pulling a 7500lb. trailer a gentle grade will slow the truck down so much it has to go into second gear to maintain 50m.p.h. Chevrolet really missed the boat with the 6.0 engine in the 2001 model year.I have been back to the dealer nine times just for performance related problems.First the throttle body was sticking coming off idle, the exhaust system made a strange noise at 1700 R.P.M. , both were replaced and are working good. Second the truck seemed to miss or hesitate while taking off.The cleaned the fuel injectors at 6000 miles and again at 10000 miles. At 12000 miles they replaced the fuel injectors and fuel regulator.Just got the truck back again and do not think it is any better. The computer says their is a mis-fire code and the technicians keep insisting it is bad gas.I have never had problems like these in other trucks I have owned. Similar Products Used: 1998 GMC K-1500 5.7 LITER, AUOTOMATIC,3.73 GEARS WILL PULL A 7500 LB. FIFTH WHEEL TRAILER WITH MORE AUTHORITY THAN THE 6.0 LITER WITH AUTO ; SAME GEARS AND TIRES.Traded in the GMC with 45,000 trouble free miles and no squeaks or rattles.Overall the 1998 is a better truck than the 2001. |

Someone in the Pontiac final assembly plant threw a rag in the housing between the tranny and transfer case... made a mess, but was fixed... not an engineering problem,, a union problem... or most people reading this probably cant comprehend that conspiracy theory which happens daily I Love my Z71.. I have no idea what all these people are talking about... the problems stated about are problems from people who are ignorant about trucks.. period... I have used and been around trucks all my life and all Big 3 have had their share of good and bad ideas... As usual the people who know the least about a product are going to fuss about it the most... They dont bother to check the date the truck is manufactured.. hey idiots... dont buy a Monday or Friday truck or one built near a holiday.. its not the engineers fault.. the squeaks and rattles are from the assembly line... Most people on here have no common sense or brains at that.. I would encourage anyone fixing to buy a truck to RESEARCH that VIN!!! AND DONT BE STUPID LIKE THE MAJORITY OF THESE COMPLAINERS WITH NO TRUCK KNOWLEDGE Similar Products Used: Dodge half ton, Ford half ton... both are alright, I like the ride and drive of my Chevy though |

The service center sucks sucks sucks.. Its the worst feeling having someone you paid close to 30,000 dollars say well well get it fixed for you and being without a vehicle and having to wait a hour for their shuttle to stand you at home all day and then to say we had to order parts and bring it back in later. The trucks looks really good with me in it and in the dealer service center and while its outside waiting to get worked on or when its in my drive way waiting to go back in for service. Its the first new vehicle that i have ever purchased and i really loved the new body style. The truck is super fast and lays you back in the seat with a stomp of the pedal. From the get go i was plagued with little problems that i thought were normal bugs for a new vehicle. The only problem was it was a swarm of never ending annoyances... Similar Products Used: None |

Drivetrain and rattling body This is the worst Truck I've ever owned. Weaker than my 67 GMC with a 6 cyl. It will not pull, the engine pings at 65 mph with cruise set. It has to downshift at slighest grade with cruise control on. The brake drums are due for their 2nd turning in 15k mi. I had a 98 Z71 that was awesome-10 times the truck this is. Chevrolet will not even call me back- at any level from the dealer to the "area representitive"- I am definitely not impressed. Similar Products Used: Compared to every other vehicle I've owned (appx 20) it is the worst-hands down. |
