Where do I start....gas mileage, reliability, to name a few.

I am very disappointed with the quality of this vehicle. I too have had many problems with my truck. In fact I have since traded it for a more reliable vehicle. I was thinking of trading it for a PT Cruiser but after all of my problems I have been scared away from Crystler products for life. Good luck to the rest of the Dakota owners...its just a matter of time before yours is in the shop too.

How can the Japanese produce a vehicle that will run 200,000+ miles without a single visit to the mechanic but my "state-of-the-art" Dodge can't even go 10,000 miles???!!!

After reading the latest review i thought id share something with you all
Tjhis truck has the Best looks off all the truck out there today. But it has a teribble motor and drive train Just like the other reviews i also was stranded because of a ignition problem

Weakness:

I returned this truck for the teribble drive train problems that i had within the first 2 weeks. Ignition and tranny problems plagued me
they fixed it all and sold it a a managers special ( So im told)

Ok it really is a nice looking truck .
And had it not had so many problems within a month i would have kept it. Even if the mileage it got was very bad.
But this is how it went so i bailed from there truck line.
Mind u their viper has always caught my eye( maybe one day )
Well my new tucoma hasnt failed me yet and i love it
to bad it doesnt look as nice as the Dodge. But i havent seen the warranty shop yet and ive had it for 6 months now.

So Dodge you get a 2 stars for rating >>(looks)
and a 1 star for crummy service and drivetrain

Strength:

The 4.7L with the multi speed automatic is awesome. I have installed an aftermarket Airaid intake system and a performance exaust, and this truck runs like a BOH. Have taken it 4 wheeling quite a few times now and after some pretty hairy stuff, it is still rock solid with no squeeks or rattles. Left my buddy's GMC wondering how I do it. Very agile and excellent at slow rock crawling, and mud/snow covered steep rocky trails. Rides like a Caddy once back on the highway. Blows up the steepest sections of I-70 in the mountains in high gear, leaving almost everybody in the dust.

Tires are wearing very well, should get 40-50 thousand from the factory Goodyear RT/S skins.

All accessories and air work great.

Weakness:

Haven't seen one yet. Paint on sides could be a bit smoother, but this is not a Ferrari were discussing here.

I absolutely love this rig. Gas mileage is not too bad at 16-17 in town and in the woods, and 18-19 on the road. Strong, solidly built truck. I see reviews on this and other vehicles stating that peoples brake rotors warp. Watch for mechanics who intentionally over-tighten lug bolts. Check the torque yourself and eliminate this situation.

Strength:

Great power, strong, stiff chassis. This truck feels like it could tow forever. It has great looks, not so streamlined like the new Daks and Ram. Still tells you that this is a real truck. Engine itself has been rock solid. I have 150k miles on it, and have owned it since new. Styling still looks good, and has a comfortable cabin. the headroom is much better than in the current generation, and more room in the front seats. Also, the bins under the rear seats have lids, so it is much easier to carry groceries, etc in the back. The current versions do not have covers for the bins, which I think detracts alot from the utility of the club cab now. Parts are not terribly expensive, and there is a fair amount of aftermarket performance upgrades as well.

Weakness:

The paint has begun to delaminate. This is inevitable on all Mopar products of this era. There are a couple class action lawsuits in regards to this problem. GM had the same problem, and they settled a couple years ago. If you have this problem, complain to Chrysler. Eventually they will have to pay for a complete paint job on the truck. Various parts have begun to fail at this time, but I suspect it is due to the high mileage and the fact that this truck has never been babied. Still, it has held up surprisingly well. I had to replace the transmission at 120k, followed by the water pump, power steering pump, front ball joints/tie rods, and the motor mounts. The fan can be *very* loud, especially when cold, but this is a problem all V8 Daks are subject to. When the fan is running quiet, this is one of the smoothest and quietest engines I have ever had. Gas mileage really sucks now, worse than new, but it is a V8, so it is expected.

I would definitely reccommend this truck. Great power and good reliability. I have never felt that I needed more power, no matter what I was hauling or towing. The bed is a good size, and parts are cheap. I have owned this truck since 1992, and have never come close to trading it in on a newer model or a competitor. It is very easy to work on yourself. Everything is in a logical place, and the home mechanic can easily replace just about everything with little effort. The auto has been pretty reliable, especially if well maintained. With a little effort and not too much cash, you can easily get 300+hp out of this motor, more if you are willing to invest in a supercharger. Overall a great truck, and far easier to work on than the newer version.

Best value. The Ranger is far too small and the engine bay is extremely crowded. Even with the 5.2 V8, there is ample room in the Dak engine bay, unlike all its competitors. The S-10 is a joke, far too small and underpowered. Really, I think the only true competition is a full size truck or a Toyota Tundra, which is a good 10k more expensive these days.

This New Generation V8 mated with the new multi speed trans seems to be a good combo.Good exceleration,Much faster then any ranger or toyota I`ve ever owned ,.Lots more room too!I understand Deimler(dodge) spent 2.8 billion developing this engine trans combo for the grand cherokee.Single over head valves in each bank, hollow crankshafts with Steel sinstered lobes, magneisum valve covers ,Premeium gaskets, all made in USA ! WOW. Multi speed 2nd gears for a smoother 4-2 kickdown.I love this High Tech .All this at a good price . $2000 cash rebate till july 1st 2001. Check it out at www.carsdirect.com, good hunting jj
