This truck is an awesome truck! No problems with any part yet and it has 70,000 miles on it. All these reviews talk about trannys failing, well maybe you just dont have luck or it was a lemon....it happens with all trucks. The best thing about Dodge's are they are built to last and take hits! The Dodge's are great to lift up. I have put 4 inches of suspension on my truck and 33/1250 BFG-AT's. The Dodge truck has big wheel wells which is great if you plan on lifing it up. I must say all my friends insist Ford and Chevy is better. This is complete bullsh**! I have a 1997 Ford F-150 4x4 it cant handle sh**, it is always broken down and im having to fix it, the Chevy I used to have lasted a while but just didnt to compare to this Dodge. What's sad is the Ford and Chevy had V8s in them and couldn't handle what my DODGE V6 does. Ihave hauled this thing crazy and still no problems. Those who say the paint job sux...I would have to say I dont have a problem yet just your usual scratches from wear and tear. Especially OFF-ROADING! Besides they are CHARACTER MARKS NOT SCRATCHES. The Dodge is easy to fix. The truck only has a V6 in it and does pretty well for such big tires on it. If you plan on lifting and upsizing tires majorly DO go with the V8 and and re-gear the truck for even better acceleration (Dont try this if you have NO clue what this means....have a shop do it for ya..ITS PRETTY DA** HARD and if ya screw up well youve screwed yourself over a truck).

Weakness:

The worst quality I would have to say that the cupholder on the older models like mine SUX. It's awesome for big drinks, but the small ones fall right out if ya take corners quick. Trust me I've done it many of many times. This has been resolved in the new trucks..I think they put them down lower in '98 or '99. So that's no longer a prob...The only thing that I have found is that the exhaust manifold pings and knocks around alittle. I think this is because the gaurd along the exhaust has come loose and knocks around. It doesnt do it all the time....in fact not much at all. Only when just starting from zero mph. This isnt anything major. THIS TRUCK HAS NO REAL WEAKNESSES BUT IF YOUR LOOKING FOR POWER GO FOR THE V8 (318 or 360).

I would have to say if your lookin for a good all around, significantly powered truck DODGE is your truck. PERSONALLY I do not believe there are no other choices THEY ARE ALL PIECES OF SH** (CHEVY,FORD ESPECIALLY, MAZDA, NISSAN, GMC) Toyota are durable, but just toys! GO for the Dodge you will be pleased! If you get a lemon for a truck NEVER give up that's just a coincidence...your next truck will not have the same probs GUARANTEED.

Strength:

Convience features are well thought out i.e. storage and cargo handling.

Weakness:

front brakes wore out at 30,00 miles. there have been six recalls on this model year for various items. Extensive and expensive driveline problems should be unheard of in a pickup truck.

I have never abused this truck and have maintained it faithfully since I purchased it new. The brakes wore out at 30,000 miles, the fuel pump died shortly after that (a $500 repair). I have 58,000 miles on it now (5/31/01) and had to have new bearings installed in the rear end about three weeks ago by my local "five star" dealer ($700) and already I'm starting to hear gear noises from the back end, I assume it will probably need further repairs. The cruise control quit working recently, the headliner has come loose at the front, and the intake manifold is leaking. It was hit at low speed while parked in a lot, and cost over $700 to repair a slow hit to the front bumper. So much for being built "Ram Tough". Needless to say I won't be buying any more Daimler/Chrysler products. Ever.

Strength:

The truck ran pretty well. It ran on a dual fuel setup, so power was down a little, but the milage ran about 15 on gas, 11 on lp. I ran the truck to 130,000 mi. and never even changed the spark plugs.

Weakness:

There were a couple recalls, and at with the next owner, the truck backfired at 140,000 and bent a pushrod, nothing major.

This was a tough truck. I was driving about 200 mi. a day, most of it was down dirt roads or through pastures. It was the quietest truck, inside the cab that I've driven. I had problems keeping brakes and shocks on it, but last time I checked, it had 175,000 mi. on it, and with no problems.

Strength:

It looks great and is comfortable like a car inside. We have had no problems towing our Rockwood tent trailer.

Weakness:

Engine troubles, brake troubles, paint job is terrible, trans makes terrible noise sometimes when in reverse, and whomever designed the cup holder location is nuts!

At 70K miles, our engine light came on and the truck started to idle badly. We immediately took it to our local Dodge Dealer. We found that both heads were cracked and all four cylinders were gone. We have no idea why this happend since the truck has never overheated, leaked oil, or given any troubles before this. The mechanic has no idea either.

We have had to have the brakes replaced once and they have never been the same since. I pretty much have to put the petal thru the floor board if I want to stop.

The paint was already chipping before we got the truck home.

Needless to say, I would never buy another Dodge Truck again.

P.S. Its also true that Dodge Service Centers have no idea what they are doing!

Model Reviewed: /Ram 1500 ext cab 5.2 ltr

Strength:

Large and comfortable interior compartment. Great center console armrest. Good size rear seat in ext cab. Good ride height and clearance. Power from 5.2 ltr engine is ok, but certainly isnt worth the gas mileage. Suspension feels great, like a truck should. Potholes, tracks, curbs are no problem. Happy with 4wd system in a bad winter. Never shoveled my driveway all winter, and it flew right to the garage every time. I bought this truck with 15k on the odometer, and have logged a bit over 8k since.

Weakness:

I spend enough money on gas that I'm afraid OPEC is going to start sending me thank you cards !!! I am not kidding. Make no mistake, if you do not have anything significant to haul, or dont absolutely need the room that the Ram truck affords, DO NOT GET THIS TRUCK NEW OR USED !!!!! That is the main thing, everything else that has happened or was going to happen can be worked through, but spending enough on gas that you can't feed your family is just not tolerable. Enough said.

Basically, I bought this particlar vehicle because I had a severe want to haul my own $##@% without asking anyone if I can borrow thier truck. I had a 2yr old to think about, so a smaller truck was out of the question. I thought. Enter the gas mileage!! Anyway, now I am looking at a Toyota Tacoma in hopes I can erase this mistake. I have enjoyed it for the time I had it, but I really didn't NEED a truck like this. So, if I have reached anyone else almost making the same purchase, Praise the Lord !

we'll we all know chrysler can't make a transmission...how the h@ll can they get away with this sh1t? i never had an automatic trans. fail till i bought this truck.i owned alot of mopars with alot more horsepower and never broke a trans.if the trans. would have lasted at least 100,000
miles i wouldnt mind as much, but not 58,000.Chrysler needs to face theyre
problem and start doing somthing to help the people that bought these trucks.other then the front end wearing out at 38,000,and the tranny. i like the truck...i bought the 2500 3/4 ton thinking it would hold up,i do use the truck for light towing, picking up lawn and garden equipment, for repairs at my shop.i'm thinking on buying a chevy...i heard there is a new one out with an allison trans.

...where do I start, tires, tranny, brakes, doors etc

Bought the truck in feb of 99 within 2 weeks the doors failed to close due to the screws on the door latches being overtightened and the shhetmetal cracking,...after driving 15 miles to the dealer holding the door closed, they replaced both doors and blamed it on the factory, i got the truck back 22 days later, chrysler cust was of no help.
Tranny went out at 30,000 miles, chrysler only response has been "buy an extended warranty", dealer has tried to sell me a new truck...

Where will it all end, will Chrysler ever stand behind their products, because this sucks, will any dealers ever stand behind the vehicles that they sell????????????//

Strength:

The truck has good power and low-end grunt and good top end as well. It handles very well when loaded down and tows very well. I have never had and problems with the truck and I have over 13K on it already since my purchase last October in Ohio. The truck is comfortable to drive on long road trips. I drove from Columbus Ohio to Boise Id this spring, a 2200-mile trip with the bed loaded. The truck ran well and the seats were very comfortable. The seats being upright like a real chair helps allot. All the controls are easy to reach and I am very impressed with the placement of all the controls, they are easy to reach and every thing can be adjusted from a glance. The Gas Mileage on the freeway is not bad considering I have the 5.9 V8.

Weakness:

Really bad City mileage, 10 to 11... But that is to be expected. Occasionally hard to shift into 4x4 when Transfer Case has no warmed up yet.
Back Seats a little to upright for my taste, my friends seemed not to care...

Overall the truck drives like a truck and handles very well. I have pushed it hard into corners before and had the tail slit out before the truck really started to fell like it was going to roll. The solid front axle really helps with when traveling off road. I have had this truck into places my buddy could not get is limited edition Tundra, my Diffs slipped less and I had much more articulation on the front end (IFS vs Solid Coil Over Axle). I really like the stock ground clearance and the engine compartment is clean and fairly roomy, not a hard truck to work on. We have all heard of Trans problems on these trucks but I have yet to encounter any at all. The truck shifts very firm and rarely hunts for gears when driving hilly roads (Northern Utah). When loaded the truck handles and stops very nicely. If your short, expect some problems getting in and out of the truck, and your feet my not touch the floor when sitting in the drivers seat. (My Wife).

I really enjoy this truck and have had no problems before. This is my first Dodge and so far I am very pleased.
