n/a Hi just wanted to share this with you, incase it helps.I've read most of the posts & the main problem with this truck seems to be the auto tranny. My truck now has 65k on it,when i bought it had about 48k.I'm very cautious with dealers,so first thing i did was drain & fill all the fluids on the truck-just in case.To be fair all fluids looked in excellent condition.I have extended warranty & am allowed to do all service work myself(provided i keep a log book/receipts).Anyhow my tranny started to feel "just not right" at about 60k.I wasn't bothered as i still have 20k left on warranty. So checking the service manual,i saw the section on tranny band adjustment-thinking that this had probably never even been done on my truck ,i went ahead. It was an absolute pain in the @$$ to do(very difficult to get at adjustment screw). What a difference!Tranny feels like brand new.Now i have to do rear band also. For those of you that get your truck serviced by Dodge then this is no help,as they SHOULD be doing this every 24k.This should help those that take it to a $20 tranny fluid change "special".Arm yourself with a Haynes manual so you can look up the adjustment specs i.e. 72in/lb torque & backed off 2 turns. Then go to service cnter to get service done.If they can't quote you the torque & turn specs then they can't,won't adjust the bands for you. After all you get what you pay for!The rear band has to be adjusted with the tranny pan off,so those of you that has a high mileage truck fitted with a tranny drain bolt-you can bet it has never been done. That is why Dodge made the pan without a drain bolt,so it is serviced properly.I'm not saying this is the problem with all Dodge transmissions(if only it were),but it might help some of you in the future.Good luck & keep Ramming!Let me know if it helps. Strength:
Awesome power, good looks
Weakness:
The transmission shifts up and down continously, anti-locks malfunctioned, thermostat leaked multiple times after being repaired, transmission computer malfunctioned, and when you truck is in the shop over a long period of time dodge does not provide you with alternative transportation (Week or More). All repairs made under manufacturer warranty. Did I not mention that the headlights stoped working only 2 months after I had the truck Dodge has a lot of homework to do. After multiple trips to the shop and numerous rental car bills I have finally gotten my truck to run half decent. Similar Products Used: Ford, Chevy Ford and Chevy do not compare with the raw power but for reliability dodge takes last place. |

Dashboard is very simple. Not as fancy and decorative as other trucks. Gas mileage sometimes hurts the wallet. 13-16mpg. I bought my Ram used 2 years ago. It is a '96, I got a good deal on it and have had zero problems with it. I get lots of compliments on the look and the body style. I have put nerf bars and bed rails on it to dress it up. It is a solid truck front to back. I am 6'3"" and I have lots of leg room in the front and back. Very comfortable seats and very easy to read and accessible controls. My next truck will definitely be another Dodge Ram or Dakota. |

Radio had no cassete. I have had a good overall experience with my truck. I have now owned it for nearly 8 trouble free years and 100,000 miles. I put a $35.00 water pump in it a couple of years ago. At first I was worried that my truck was not going to be reliable because it wasn't Japanese, but I haven't had any problems. My friends are in love with their Toyota's but they have plenty of problems with them. I have owned several Japanese cars with much more trouble than my Dodge or my wifes Ford cars. We live on a dirt road and I change my oil (11 quarts) about every 8-10,000 miles. Similar Products Used: 1998 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. Toyota is a very expensive stupid little truck that uses more gas than my powerful dodge and costs about the same. Also, I can haul 3 tons of cargo in the Dodge compared to 3 ounces in the Toyota. |

brakes had to be replaced once i got to san diego (before the first 20K i'm sure) and brake depot screwed up had to have additional work done; paint keeps falling off, who cares excellent truck for off road work, camping and towing. i drove it down the alaska highway with a 9.5' coachment sport camper pulling a 4x4x8 box trailer all the way to san diego by way of bend, reno, denver, tucson, then new york and back up and down rockies, through the sierras and four wheeled up to cougar lake in whistler bristish columbia with the camper and trailer--passed a new Tacoma that was turning around, tranny overheated but we were up high and pulling some weight (camper was full of gear, water food etc), no problems at all. never got it stuck and off roaded it plenty. Its all good as long as you don't have to take it to a dealer.
Weakness:
After several recalls and taking it in to get repaired, trailer hitch, etc, the fuel injection pump failed at 70,000 miles. Trying to find a dealership that would look at it within 3 weeks was a joke. Finally, after driving it halfway to where i bought it and towing it the rest of the way (200 miles), this dealership had no appointment to begin with. Offered no loaner car or rental, and could care less. They found the problem (fuel injection pump) and tried to screw me out of the warranty on that. Why is it all these dealerships deisel mechanics are backed up for 3 weeks? I depend on this truck for my business and if a person can't get it serviced in a reasonable time period, whats the point. And they call themselves 5 star dealers, hahaha, then try to screw the customer out of their warranty, hahaha. give me a break. Seems like a very solid truck. Only reason I bought a Dodge was for the Cummins engine. I use it to pull a gooseneck trailer loaded with logs, about 15,000 lbs on a regular basis. very impressed with this truck, until I had to take it in to a dealer. The exhaust brake I added is a definate lifesaver. Similar Products Used: Ford has way better service, although I never had to use it. |
