Strength:

Good gas mileage, mechanically sound,. few problems with it in total

Weakness:

Very little power. I had the base-base version. 4 cyl. 5 spd. 2WD regular cab. Ford needs to make v6 a standard in Rangers... it takes too much power for a 4 cyl. to do the job. To hit 60 on the highway you had to be going downhill, or have the a/c off. Horrible acceleration!! I blame that on the small engine size, too. Not a comfortable ride-very bumpy. Girlfriend hated to ride in it b/c of that. Seats weren't built for comfort, either. Clutch went out at 60,000... that was really the only problem with it.

I started out hating Fords. I have always been a die-hard Chevy person... until this little truck. I was not always nice or easy on this truck, and it took every ounce of punishment I could dish out. Took it mudding, drove through HUGE watered down ditches, got it stuck in a stream (long story short... the truck was parked too close to the stream bank and we were removing a beaver dam... wall of water... truck drifted a little...got stuck in deep mud at the bottom and couldn't get it to pull itself out...had to pull it out with a larger truck). When I bought this truck in 2001, it had 40,000 miles on it... seriously. When I parted with it, it had 85,000 miles.

Strength:

No strengths in this crate at all in my opinion.

Weakness:

Poor quality built, ford does not stand behind its product..back doors fell down, and had to be adjusted, all the lights went as the computer sensors went, the doors have fallen again and I can not open one. Check engine light keeps coming on, clunck in the drive line, and on and on it goes.

First I bought a ranger xl brand new, got it home and had an engine knock. Took it back and demanded my money back but instead they gave me this truck, it was an upgrade, brand new for the same price as the xl. Got it home and had an engine knock. Took it back and they replaced the motor, get this, not once but 3 times, factory motors...and then still had a knock and they rebuilt the engine as it had a lifter knock. I went through arbitration and every avenue possible to try and recover my money back from this hunk of garbage. I am not impressed.

Strength:

Durability
1600lb payload
longetivity
fun
appearence

Weakness:

poorly built two piece driveshaft
Poorly placed front differential breather
Wet weather traction in two wheel drive

For the most part, this vehicle has been reliable. But due to a careless/stupid previous owner, the vehicle was in poor mechanical condition. With restoration, the truck runs and looks almost brand new. My truck is a baseline model with a 2.3 inline four cylinder, which is slow, but holds it's own. I would (and will most likely) purchase another Ranger. These trucks are deserving of praise for their resiliance, and I would recomend them to anyone.

everything except the transmission
original 10 year old battery

Weakness:

transmission always shifted a little rough but i never had to get it serviced and it always drove great

this is an awesome truck, it is extremely well built and rugged for something of its size, the 4.0L has plenty of power and stock its pretty decent offroad, the only problems ive had were the front 4x4 wheel bearings (850$) but its 10 years old so i cant complain

Strength:

Dependable!! I want to drive my vehicles without worrying if it will start, or if it will fail. I have total confidence in this vehicle.

Weakness:

The 3.0L is a little light on power for the Supercab version, and I've never hit the EPA estimates for fuel economy.

Maybe it's the way I treat vehicles in general, and having a good dealership service department, but this is the best quality small and has served all my needs, performing flawlessly. Mine has the 5-speed OD auto, 3.0L, tow package, power package, a/c, etc.

good 1/2 ton truck that anyone (even an 18 year old like me) can upgrade the hell out of.

Weakness:

i haven't had one besides the tranny

My Ranger has been through alot. I have been everywhere with that ranger and i have to say it is a good truck. the only problem that i have with it now is i over worked the tranny on it so i have to get a new one but that was my fault not the trucks. my truck has 4" rancho lift 31 10.50" tires and i'm building a prerunner for it so i can get rid of the piece of crap 18" spare and i will be putting on 33 12.5 tires really soon. but any way the ranger is a good truck for weekend offroaders just before you put big tires on it get a stronger tranny RANGERS RULE.

Strength:

although i'm overall dissatisfied with the truck, it does ride nice, seats are comfy and the stock am/fm/cd is great. ac blows real cold. also pulls out tree roots with ease and i've had 1300 pounds of gravel in the bed and the truck did not whimper a bit paint job is nice. resale value should be ok, although not as good as a toyota. 4x4 goes good in snow, even at depths over a foot.

Weakness:

fuel economy is pathetic. this is my biggest complaint, and it might be unfair to critisize the 4x4 truck fuel economy when the cars i've owned over the last 20 or so years got at least mid-upper 20 mpgs. (i'm glad my day to day car gets like 27mpg) i'd gladly give up grunt for some mpg, which is why i got the 3.0, and not the 4.0. hey ford- can the 410 gears and give me something like 373. the rear brakes lock-up, even after the 'new design/ material' shoes were installed, although not as common as when new.

this is my first ford product and it will be my last. (thats a sad statement considering i work at a ford dealership) things break that should not, especially on a new vehicle. in less than 20k miles, i've had fuel injector, rear brake shoes, driveshaft, tires and rims replaced. luckly all have been done under warranty. my truck is a 03 4x4 with the 3.0 v6 and a regular cab. there is almost no room behind the seats for storage. the headlights are so dim, sometimes i wondered if they were on. finnally replaced with sylvania silverstar, which helped alot and would recomend those to anyone.

Model Reviewed: Ford Ranger 2WD Short Bed

Strength:

Good reliability. Good paint job. The brakes last well over 100,000 miles. When you replace the pads make sure you get the "good" pads that will last. The semi-metallic ones.

Weakness:

I should have got the 4.0 liter V6 engine and 4WD.

I bought my 2000 Ford Ranger Brand new back in September 2000. It has been one of best vehicles I have owned. I have owned some GM models and will never buy another again. I have maintained all the maintenace on my vehicle according to the maintenace book. I change my oil every 2500 miles though instead of 3000. I currently have 139,200 miles on it and it is still running strong! No major problems whatsoever. Just routine service such as brakes (which lasted over 100,000 miles), cooling system flush, tune up at 100K, fuel filter, transmission flush, and tire rotation. The dealership has been great! My truck had the Firestone Wildneress tires on them back then and the dealership replaced them with Goodyear Wranglers. The tires were ok but I wanted better so I put on BF Goodrich Land Terrain tires. 4WD would work better in snow but 2WD does ok with some weight in the back bed. I would certainly buy another one. Nothing is perfect, and as long as you take care of your vehicle and service it like you are suppose to it will last.
