Strength:

Interior Comfort (plush seats and high visibility riding position); styling of vehicle; Plenty of available power; Gas mileage wasn't bad. With dual exaust a really good throaty sounding vehicle.

Weakness:

When I had the truck, the air-conditioning was always an issue, until I finally replaced the necessary parts.

The 1991 GMC Sierra is a really well built truck, but as with anything it has its faults. I bought this truck with about 135,000 miles on it and overall it is the truck I judge others by now. It was the Southern Comfort Edition and the interior was excellent. Styling Grade A. I drove this truck alot. The only problems I had with it were the air conditioning, (replaced compressor) eventually (at about 175,000 miles)I had the motor rebuilt and finally the rear end scared me terribly and went out at about 185,000 miles. These GMCs are not without their problems, but they are built to last and very dependable. Just look at the type of vehicles around you on the road-what do you see?

A great truck, with great power and capabilities as well as comfort. However the maintenance costs and reliability leave much to be desired. U-Joints, Head Gasket, Rear Axle, Brakes, Front end have all either been replaced or fixed at a large cost, all happened after warranty

Strength:

Good styling. Good power.

Weakness:

Assembled in Mexico. (Find out how to tell from VIN) Transmission is unreliable.

Bought new. Nice, good looking truck. Too bad its mechanically unsound and GMC's service department is unhelpful unless their "computers" find an error code or the problem is reproducable. I know I'm not suppose to talk about customer service, but this too is very important in determining the value of a product. Air noise in extended door windows. GMC finally fixed after insisting they listen to both sides. Driver's seat folding arm rest fell off. Seat belts locked in up position. Back folding seat hinge broke and rattled. Transmission started slipping. They just blew if off when my wife took it in. Finally I took it in and GMC opened it up to found needle bearings in the pan. Supposedly rebuilt tranny. Kept slipping but they refused to even break into it since there were no error codes and they couldn't reproduce it. They said to come back immediately if it did it again. My wife did and instead of putting it on the computer they just rode around with her. Once, with me driving, it hesitated for almost 3 seconds and then felt like someone rear-ended me. GMC said there were no error codes. Took it to another dealer, same song and dance. Called the consumer complaint line. They stood behind dealer and wouldn't do anything further without arbitration. I even bought an OBDII scanner. The shift time delay was sometimes up to 6-7 seconds. This seems excessive to me, but noone seemed to know what this parameter meant and the GMC folks said they never heard of it even though it was an extended GMC parameter. Now that its out of warranty, they'll probably be more than happy to open it up for me. $$$$ ;-( Unfortunately, this is about normal for US companies. I haven't bought domestic in 22 years. Now I'm reminded why. I would love to again, but the quality is just not there. My stepson had to have a Mustang. Its had 4 clutches in 12 months. American quality!! My wife wanted a full-size PU. Next time I'll look at foreign and try to get a good deal since one seems to pay for name on most of them. They finally seem to be offering full-size. About time!! I never had any troubles what so ever from my Mazda 2200. After 12 years a transmission bearing started giving me some noise.

Strength:

Comfort, 4wd ability, power, room.

Weakness:

Brakes, cheap interior plastics, gas mileage

I bought it used 2 1/2 years old. It has been a great truck however their seemed to be an abundance of cheap thin plastic everywhere. Most noticeably was on the dash, it was textured to simulate leather, but you could tap on it and feel the thin hollow plasticky feel. The front wheels were canted outward at the top and the dealer removed some knock-out plates to straighten them. Then there was the jerky steering wheel, it seemed to happen mostly when it was cold out. While driving on the left side of the highway where the road leans left and you must hold tension on the wheel to the right to maintain a straight course, it would seem like the steering wheel would just give way to the right and the entire truck would swerve to the right until you reacted, it all happened in a split second, but I could never figure it out. I read about a speed steering sensor unit which I replaced but it still happened. The front seats were very comfortable and there was adequate room in the back for short trips. I traded it with 90,000 miles on it and have had no major problems with it. The stereo was good but the brakes seemed to not be adequate enough to inspire confidence, it needed better brakes. The 4wd work flawlessly every time and was easy to use.

Strength:

4.8L engine and transmission handling features (or lack thereof) spacious interior

Weakness:

can't get a 5 speed with the V8 AC is so-so, takes a while to cool the cab

$18,900 is a great price for this vehicle when new. However, the work trucks can routinely be found for around $20,000 with current rebates, which is still a great price. I've only owned the truck for 2 months, and won't comment on its reliability. This review may help somebody who is currently comparing new trucks, however. This is the stripped work truck. However, I consider rubber floor covering a positive feature for a truck. Further, it's got cloth seating surfaces, AC, full gauges, and intermittent wipers, which makes it a luxury vehicle in my book. However, I do wish it had the fold-down center seat console. The base 4.8L V8 is smooth and powerful, and the automatic transmission shifts smoothly (although I wish GMC offered a 5 speed with this engine). The vehicle handles very well considering it's a truck, and braking is quite good. I prefer a firmer pedal, but there is no question that the brakes are strong. The ride is smooth and fairly firm. Put 1000 lbs. or so in the bed, and it still handles and brakes well. Interior noise is minimal. The cab is well-insulated and sealed. Control ergonomics are good, and the seats comfortable. I don't drive off-road, and can't comment on its 4wd capabilities. However, I do need 4wd for the often brutal Maine winter driving conditions, and we'll see how it does this winter. The simplicity and reliability of the manual transfer case with shift-on-the-fly 4wd in this truck is my preference. For reference, I also test drove the new F150 (comparably equipped work truck) and a base Toyota Tundra SR5 with the V6 and 5 speed (the cheapest version available). Both the Ford and Toyota handled and braked *slightly* better, but had less refined and powerful drivetrains. They both cost about $3k more in my area. The Toyota's back seat is small, and I must put 2 car seats in the rear - that's the only reason I bought a new truck. I also found the Tundra's front seat a bit too low, although I have long legs. The F150 sits higher, which I prefer, but my 5'-2" wife has a hard enough time putting our 2 year old in her car seat as it is. Ultimately, the GMC won on price, drivetrain, and comfort, and it sacrifices very little in other areas compared to the competition. I will say that I am concerned about reliability and longevity, since this is my first departure from Japanese vehicles in 13 years. On the other hand, I have plenty of relatives and friends who've had excellent service from their GMC trucks. Time will tell.

Weakness:

Terrible reliability: A/C was very weak(dealer recalibrated dual controls. It's a little better. TEMP guage didn't work from beginning(Had to take back twice to get this fixed). LEFT R Window had terrible air leak( they fixed that the first time, now the pass. side leaks). Rt Frnt Axle Leaks( Dlr said it replaced the seal. I picked it up, then they called me back & told me that the mechanic FORGOT to re-attach the sway bar. Had to take back for that. Rt Rear door makes knocking and groaning sounds (Dealer says they can't hear it. It would drive any normal person nuts. Will take it back a 2nd time. Four Wheel Drive Service Light came on( Will have to take back). Lots of irritating wind noise at freeway speeds.

Truck has great power and provides a great ride however, numerous problems nullify its good points. Only has 25,000 miles on it. What will happen by 50,000? Unless GMC comes through a great offer to make up for all this frustration, I'll never buy another GM product!

Awesome truck. 4.8L power provides plenty of ponies. I bought this truck new from dealer mainly for a hot rod, daily driver. Have put 40k miles on it, no problems so far. I race this truck regularly, putting massive strain on the powertrain, in which it never fails me. I also enjoy the generous payload for when i do use this as a truck and not a rocket. The interior was pretty plain on purchase, though im overall satisfied.

DO NOT SPEND MONEY ON THIS TRUCK unless you have lots of time to spend at the dealer for constant repairs. I have had nothing but problems. Rattling rear door.Dash lights burning out. The tail gate support cable broke and crushed my wife's foot. We are currently in court with GM on that.Premature rust on the front bumper.etc. etc.

Weakness:

Design integrety. Consistent QC. On Star. See Review summary above.

My second Sierra. First was a '02. On Star nothing but unresolved problems. Belt noise squeal still in engine. Clicking noise at engine comes & goes. Spring isolators popped out. Front bumper rusting. AC is lousy on hot days.Only works on Rec. HVAC lousy in winter. Doesn't dehumidify. Fuel economy dropped from 19 to 16.5-17.4. Close door, heated seats go on sometimes. Oil pan seal leaks. Differential seal leaks. 4 WD front would engage by itself. Service 4 WD light kept comming on. In shop 6-7 times so far. Only 24,000 miles on it. Traded in a pristine '02 6 liter gas because of way too many similar problems, and poor fuel economy. Hoping Toyota, or Nissan comes out with a full sized crew cab, and similar power train. I'll switch from this Job #1 truck.
