Strength:

Payload, as above I've verified by scale I have hauled 2,266 lbs. of logs(hardwood) Easy to work on. Gas mileage is very good. Does not seem to "want to rust"...what did Mazda do to the steel in this truck?

Weakness:

Oil burning on start-up due to Hardened Block, nickel content in the steel has led to wearing of the Mfg's rings, these seal on warming up and swelling. There are no other weaknesses to report; if I ever have to rebuild the engine I'll investigate "Harder Rings"... apparently they're available...

Before buying I researched here and elsewhere, saw it was "gutless" and since I wanted a work truck bought it.Took off the Cat Converters, got a better carb...slightly better...then one day it quit on me and found timing was way out of whack, a keyway on the timing gear had worn and finally the key itself broke. Fixed that and baby I've got a racehorse...ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM!!! The truck is unbelievable now...anyone experiencing a "gutless" B2200 should check out that keyway NOW.This truck is awesome and I've had 2 Rangers, this is the Best Truck I've ever owned. Simple to work on, tireless, will haul over a ton with one extra leaf added to the rear springs!Zillions of parts on E-Bay, I can see this truck outlasting me (I'm 53 yrs. old)

Model Reviewed: B2500

Strength:

Low road noise, HIGH reliabilty, good to very good gas mileage, looks good-great factory paint, dolls up nicely with after-market stuff, great pick up for those who know how to handle a stick, GREAT IN THE SNOW! I get lots of compliments on it from people who work on vehicles for a living. I would def recommend the Mazda B2500 5 speed standard to anybody. A GREAT VEHICLE!!! THANKS MAZDA!!! Too bad Ford never put this much quality into the Thunderbird! Tch, Tch.

Weakness:

Lack of power door locks/power windows-these should be standard for ALL vehicles.

I have had the B2500 for about ten months and I am soooo happy with this little truck. Only a 4cyl 5 spd but man! the zip it has! Bought it with 84K miles on it and NO PROBLEMS, THUS FAR. Replaced the front ball joints, put ceramic brakes and new rotors and new struts and upgraded steel wheels to 15" steel wheels and put Michelin truck tires on it. I added new platinum plugs and top-of-the-line plug wires-without having to take the engine apart-added more response to an already zippy performer. It has the flared sides at the bed and it is a sharp looking little truck (short bed). Added a K&N air filter and increased the zip even more! 24 mpg when I drive it like a gentleman. Cowboy mileage is 20mpg but that ain't bad, either. I love shifting the gears. Audio is very good. One thing I would like it to be is the cab-and-a-half, but, since I don't have a lot of stuff to carry it's no BIG DEAL. When it wears out I will look at Mazda trucks, without a doubt, and probably buy another one used from the same dealer. A few after market things like black rubber fender flares around the wheel wells (helped to close up the wheel wells for a nice custom look), Lund Running Boards, a bug deflector, a soft Tonneau bed cover and great after market premium wheels (only run in the Summer - May to November)AND a non-obtrusive chrome Panther hood ornament make for a sharp looking little truck. Little to no road noise, also, which is great since I use the truck for work selling CableTV! Can you tell whether I like this truck or not? If I ever get rid of this little baby I should be put away for being stupid.

Strength:

Lots of terrific features which were standard. Like the exteriorlooks over the competition. Tons of ground clearence for standard package. Mecanically setup easy for the D.I.Y. mechanic.

Weakness:

"BAD GAS MILAGE" slighty improved with K&N filter and Hi-Flow exhaust. Transmission hesitates on exceleration, was checked nothing found. At 45k one factory spark plug went bad. Replaced with Bosch Platinium(good choice). Drivers side window goes down noisy and jerks. Door Ajar light comes on and stays on eratically when you hit certain potholes. Armrest/center console door breaks easy, $150 from Mazda or $130 from Ford.

Mine is a daily driver to and from work. The extra cab is more spacious than reg cab. Shift on fly works great amd truck is great in snow. Tows my boat great. The price was right. Truck handles great and seats fit me like a glove.

Strength:

Driving in the high RPM range, brakes, cornering, cd stereo, and seating comfort. Stiff transmission even after 80000 miles

Weakness:

Could use more cab room(reg cab), more power would be nice(something they addressed in 2001 with the new 2.3L),

I got this vehicle at 80000 miles from my step father and with a few required maintenance issues(serpentine belt, oil, spark plugs) runs great and reliably, even when shutting off and starting in small periods of time. Horsepower is not much but up at 3000-5500rpm power is good and meaty. I drive the truck pretty hard, nothing like crahsing it but not exactly like grandma on Sunday. I've sustained a 5 second spin out on straight pavement and 105mph so far. It is a little lacking in space(I'm 6 ft) but does just fine for me. I like the cd player and good sound quality biult in.

Strength:

Descent gas mileage 22 in city and 26 on highway. looks better and costs less than a ranger.

Weakness:

Had to take it in a few times right after I bought it... because the drivers side door, both front and back bumpers had to be adjusted. I still think it was damaged in shipping...(even tho they said it wasn't).

I've owned 3 mazda trucks now. The first was a '87 b2200, the second was a '92 b2200. All I can say is I wish I still had my 92, because the 87 I rolled it 3 times, the '00 has had more problems than I care to mention. I wish that Mazda still made their own trucks.

Strength:

Dependable, good-looking, great value, excellent for camping, esp. w/the shell on the back.

Weakness:

Small cab, even with the opening cab doors, but it's a truck, not an SUV.

I purchased my 1999 Mazda in May of 2000 with 8000 miles on it. It is now May of 2003 and it has 90,000 miles on it and I have been completely happy with this vehicle. Other than a new set of tires, oil changes, new brakes and a new o2 sensor, I have not had to perform any maintenance on this vehicle. I am extremely negligent in car maintenance and have not performed the recommended services. I have beaten the crap out of this truck and not taken good care of it and the engine sounds as good as the day I bought it. It has never even had a tune-up. It has held up exceptionally well. I have driven this truck all over the country, from North Carolina to California and Canada and camped out of it. I even drove it through New York City and felt completely safe. The highway gas mileage is excellent for a truck and I never been anything but comfortable in the vehicle, even on long trips. It is not fancy; no bells and whistles or leather, it is just a great running truck and I am sure it will last to 200,000 miles or more. The cab is small but I am 5-foot 4 so that doesn't matter to me. However, others that have ridden in it feel cramped. But it's not their truck, right?

Strength:

Great for light towing, gas mileage, and reliability.

Weakness:

Having vinyl seats and no AC make for a bad combo. Wish it had 4WD. Snow and rear wheel drive are not always the best mixture. Dashboard lights burn out quickly.

Great little pickup. The suspension could always be upgraded. But if your good with a clutch, you can break the balls off some of those luxary truck and drivers.

Front driverside airbag might need improvement.

Strong body, I am glad to hear some of the reviews about the good milage the truck produce, the engine is quite & smooth, it perform flawless. The A/C is cold, the sound system sound great. Mazda truck is made by Ford, the style is slightly different. Resale value is better for Mazda, but cost is about the smae.

Good gas mileage. Roughly 18 in the city, and up to 24 mpg on the highway. Runs great at higher speeds (higher than 55)

Weakness:

Carburetor gives me problems sometimes when it is cold.

This is the best truck I have had. My dad and I both own the same truck. Over 142,000 on it. Both trucks had master cylinders go out on them at roughly the same time. Replaced oxygen sensor wire, calipers, and carburetor. I was able to do all repairs myself on this vehicle and have not really had to take it in for much. Never left me stranded, although it has come close but always pulls through. I will not consider getting another brand truck. Would have liked a 4X4 model with fuel injection, but that is my next purchase when this dies.

Nice design, very safe and durable, best compact truck I have ever owned. Recommend to anyone!

Weakness:

Early ignition(with the engine under a load you will her a chattering nosie from the engine), rear axle excessive play(rattles over rough roads), Express down drivers window shakes and rattels while rolling down, jump seats what are they good for?

NOT 1 WORRY. My wife was hit head on by a 2001 Ford F-150 going about 50 mph. The airbags deployed and she walked away with just a brusie from the seat belt. The truck was totaled and for a 99 being totaled in 2003 I recieved $14000.00 from the insurence. The hold thier resale. Never left stranded or had any major problem.
