Strength:

Fuel economy, strong big bed

Weakness:

bouncy ride

Wonderful truck, fast enough for a diesel and capable for hauling. Economy is good, specially on the highway. No major mechanical problems except for a tendency to burn the glow plugs. They were changed twice but the problem was corrected by eliminating the sensor for the plugs (it would not trun off, a common problem in this make, according to my mechanic). The sensor was replaced by a push-button on the dash. Overall a very good buy

Strength:

Good ride for a small truck. Dependable ride summer(cold A/C) or winter. 4WD makes it easy to go anywhere anytime and good heat. Handles loads well, even with the 4 banger. The 4:10 rearend makes the modest HP work to the fullest.

Weakness:

Tight cab, next time it will be an extracab. Sometimes short on HP, the V6 with a 5 speed would make this truck just right. Gas mileage could be better for a four cylinder. But trying to push a box through the wind is hard to do. After all it's a truck.

I bought this vehicle new as a left-over in '96. This ia the last year that the 4 banger was used with the 4x4 platform. (I think) This truck has been very reliable from day to day use. One trip to the dealer for a check engine light problem ( bad sensor at the fuel filler) and one trip for the Firestone recall. Replacing the tires with Michelin AT's was like replacing the truck with a new truck. Over 7 years the only work done other than normal maintenance (oil and filters)has been a water pump and starter to date. Yes, it has had the normal "Ford" glitches, the ocasional auto wipers when the sun is shining and the auto on interior light when the door switches stick, but has only not started one day in 7 years. ( when the starter quit) Will I buy another? Yes, when I finally ware this one out. That should be a long time, it still looks and runs like new in and out.

Strength:

Acceleration is decent, also great for hauling fairly heavy loads. great gas mileage and handling, especially in the snow.

Weakness:

5th gear acceleration is pretty slow, tops out about 105 even with new exhaust and filter system. Plastic stoneshield on front end is a bummer, I knocked it off so frequently wound up just leaving it off.

This is the best truck I've ever owned. The 2.5L 4 cyl. was sluggish at frist but after putting a k&n filtration system on it it has tons of go in it. This truck is great in the mud and off-road. You can beat it up horribly and yet it still gets you to where you need to go.

Strength:

Handles well for a pick-up. Did not get much out of line in a 75 MPH panic stop though had to stay on top of it. Not nearly as bad as the old mustangs use to be as point of comparison. But you can't get lazy. Good acceleration for a 4 cyl. A little noisy, but hey it's a truck not a car.

Weakness:

If I had my druthers more power but you can only wring so much out of a 4 cyl that is driven every day and still have it be dependable. In that Mazda has done a great job.

In my opinion a great little truck. First I have owned though have driven pick-ups and larger trucks on and off over the years. My truck is pretty basic, std cab 5 spd 4X2.Only problem so far is the oil pressure switch failed and it took going to the dealer three times to get it fixed. I just don't understand their logic regarding troubleshooting. On the third time in and when it ended up costing them a rental for me they finally replaced the switch and its been fine since. Had the problem with the floor mats on driver's side but I put in some pep boys mats which if slid forward a bit keeps the clutch arm from catching on the floor mat. I've driven a variety of 4 cyl vehicles in my life and for an engine this is one of the best. As to be expected it has to be driven hard if you want to really experiance it.. It's power band is predictably narrow but if you stay on top of the peak its a joy to drive. Yet it can be driven very sedately easily.. For a 4 banger it pulls well at low RPMs. I have hauled up to 800Lbs in the bed plus driver and passenger with no difficulty but of course I was not climbing hills here in the flatland..In summary I have been very satisfied and expect to keep the truck a while.

Strength:

Paint/Body, Durability, low interior/road noise, AC works great, Horsepower (B4000 only)

Weakness:

Horsepower(2300 and 3000 only), Cargo space (cubic feet, not payload capacity--but again, not bad for a compact truck).

Great truck for the money. If anyone is looking at a used one, I would recommend the 4.0L V6 (B4000), as the other engines seem a bit underpowered, especially on highways (70+ MPH), Hey it's a truck, not a coupe so what d'ya expect?? My model is the 1994 B4000LE 2WD, loaded, and it has been outstanding. Very dependable mechanically, and paint/body look better than 90% of other vehicles that are only 1 year old or newer. I get about 20mph on the highway, and about 17 in city. Payload capacity is excellent for a small/compact truck. I've hauled numerous landscaping pavers, edgers, and my sister's pool table slate pieces. Never had any problems with acceleration when loaded heavily. It does OK in snow, but your tires and driving skill will make all the difference there. I will definitely get another one when the time comes, but for now, 8 years later, my truck still looks and drives like new, so why get a new one, when the old ones are this good? Anyone looking for a reliable truck, but doesn't need a full size bed would be quite satisfied with one.

well the fact that it's basically a FORD is its biggest strength.... good looks, good power. very reliable. Great truck for its size, and is easier than driving around in a full size truck. one important thing i forgot was the 4-wheel drive on this truck, i'v NEVER been stuck in this truck. not in deep snow or muddy trails.... not even in deep snow ON muddy trails. the MAZDA will make it through....

Weakness:

gas milage could be better, but if i was worried about that i would'a bought a 4-cylinder. also i seem to need ball joints which cost $700 to replace, so ill be looking into doing that myself.

GREAT overall truck, lots of power from the 4-liter V6 good looks, good ride. my truck has 128,000 miles on it 114,000 when i traded my Camaro for it. all the truck has needed is brakes but, you'll have that... this truck has always been driven in the winter, yet it has NO rust, even i dont understand that one. iv got approx. $4,000 in mods on my truck including a suspention lift, oversized off-road tires a nice sound system and much much more... the only reason i feel its worth it to sink that much money into this truck is because it feels like it has many, many more miles left in it. im going to keep it untill it DIES and when it does im going to put a Ford 302ci. in it (which by the way isn't very hard to do) and since the body is perfect, as far as im concerned, i can keep my truck forever. if you're looking for a great truck for a reasonable price check out a mazda or a ranger....

Strength:

reliability. full size truck work load. Keep in mind this is a 4 cylinder minitruck. This pickup takes abuse.

Weakness:

Can't tow a boat without wearing clutch prematuraly. Tried it with a 16 foot ski boat. It did pull it though.

I bought this truck new. I have about 100,000 miles on it. The od stuck at 83,000. I have replaced the timing belt at 80,000 miles and was stranded once after the od was stuck due to deteriorated fuel pump wiring. I had the injection system cleaned and new plugs and wires put in at that time. The check engine light has come on for apparently no reason many times and I believe that the truck is due for a new oxygen senso, and possibly a new catallytic converter. I have also replaced front rotors and pads a few times. Rotors just once because "Just Brakes" ground them down too far. I have used this truck for work since day one with oversized tires and think it very reliable. I do have to use mid grade fuel to avoid valve rattling. I think the few problems I have had are attributed to me using it for work everyday (hauling a load). I think it is a great truck, but believe without proof that an f150 would be more tough. An f150 would also cost almost twice as much.

good power comfortable ride for a 4x4 good relibility great working 4 wheel drive system A good looking truck

Weakness:

hard on gas (mine burns oil now)

I would have to say that this is one of the best trucks I have owned. Thats why I still have it. Execellent relibility it just woun't break down. At 120k miles it still runs super. Although it does burn oil now. This truck has a towing hitch on it and has done alot of towing, like boats, capmers and such. It was a little much for the 4 banger to handle over the years. So I think it was worn out with all those years of towing. Now it's in retirement you could say. I don't tow any thing with it any more I just drive it to work and back. Still I run this truck constantly with work being a 30 mile drive away and going to work eveyday a week it's no surprise to me that it burns a quart every two weeks. I just keep giving her oil and running it. I love this truck.

Strength:

I like the styling. the on the fly 4X4 is easy to use and reliable. My dogs love riding in the bed. Its a good light duty work truck that hasnt left me stranded yet

Weakness:

The air box didnt work and we had to wait a few weeks for a replacment. the Tires were recalled. the indicator light was recalled. The drivetrain clunk was supposedly the subject of yet another technical bulletin. It was repaired but I have not noticed an improvement. The A/C compressor intermittently clunks and causes the truck to shake and the idle to drop. the rolling resistance in neutral in 4X4 is ridiculous. no wonder the gas mileage sucks so bad. And the dealership has been torture to deal with. my warranty runs out this year and they will never see me again. I got a fanatastic deal on this truck so I guess I should expect some quality reductions. I could not afford the additional $10000 to get a Toyota, so I guess I made my own bed in this case.

This truck has been reasonably good to us, but not without its issues. The dealership has been weak to say the least. I can't think of an alternative truck that I would have preferred, but I was hoping my very 1st new vehicle purchase would have gone a little smoother
