Model Reviewed: Ford Ranger XLT 3.0L Flex-Fuel Ext Cab 4X4

Strength:

Good gas mileage for an automatic truck. 18 MPG AVG Winter/ 21 MPG AVG Summer. Very good in snow. Good tire ware (Goodyear Wrangler RT/S)came with it. Very good on breaks. Nice looking interior. I've hit some big pot holes and the thing is still lined up perfectly. Idles quietly and is also quiet in low gear.

Weakness:

NO POWER NO POWER!! Poor acceleration. Stiff ride. Very light in the back, (You get bounced around). Flareside looks sharp, but you lose a lot of bed room. You can't tow or haul much with it. I had to put a new DPFE in it. Hopefully this will cure the spark-knock and check engine light. There is no place to lube this thing. I had to put a new ball joint in the right front. Poor Design on Ford's part for that. It is very compact. It's only good for short people like me. I feel like I'm in a sardine can sitting in the fold down seats in the back. My truck doesn't have the fold out doors that newer extended cabs have. That is a pain in the neck when you want to get in the back or get something out of the back. Did I mention no power.

When I bought this truck, I was looking for good gas mileage, and a 4X4 that could take me to my rugged hunting and fishing areas. It does all of that. I got what I paid for, and I've been sastisfied with this truck.
The 3.0L Flex-Fuel motor is a "dog" compared to the 4.0L Rangers. It takes some time for it to get up to speed, but once it gets into overdrive, it keeps up to speed. The seats are very comfortable. The dash board is "user friendly." Very large buttons. The motor is quiet in low gear. It's nice for the early morning hunts when you want to be stealthy driving to your hunting area. This motor is loud when you want to get all the power out of it. It's a screamer!!!

This truck's design is out of style. Tacomas and Frontiers are way ahead of the Ranger.
My needs are now more power, more room, and decent fuel mileage. I decided to test drive an LE Frontier from the dealer I purchased the truck from. I fell in love with the Frontier as soon as I sat in it. More room, more power, more features.
In it's day the Ranger was a nice option if you didn't want a full size truck. Now power, gas mileage, and room are king. Ford needs to go back to the drawing board and come out with a new mid-sized truck. Compact is out of style. My next truck will be a Frontier.

Great truck! No problems what-so-ever. Awesome power with 4.0V6 6-speed manuel is decent. This is a baby truck with man-sized power. Capable of anything you can throw at it.

Looks awesome; good powertrain

Weakness:

Poor gas mileage, small gliches.

I got rid of this truck last week. I bought it three years ago and it had 50,150 miles on it when I finally made the decision that we had to go our separate ways. I had three issues with this truck. My number one complaint with this truck is the gas mileage. Grant it, it is a truck (V-6 AT), but even on the highway I calculated 17MPH; pretty poor. The second problem with this truck was the plastic parts in the interior. Everything just seemed to kind of fall apart after 36K miles (map light, etc..). Third complaint was the gas pedal would stick after a complete stop. When you started again, it was an art not to shoot the RPM gauge up real high. In all fairness to Nissan, I'm a busy guy and I never had the interior parts or gas pedal fixed. It may have been something that an afternoon at the dealer would have taken care of and that would have been the end. The truth be told, I just never loved this truck the way I loved my first Nissan. (95 4cyl XE). Could be because I'm older and expect more now. Anyway, other than above mentioned, never any major problems. This truck would probably be perfect for a teen or early 20 something who didn't mind filling up twice a week.

Strength:

Strong engine, smooth ride, good handling, cruise on steering wheel - not stalk mounted, modern but conservative styling, quiet interior, good ergonomics with supportive seats front and back.

Weakness:

Clunky manual transmission with long throws, easily upset by sidewinds, with the windows down you get buffetted a lot - wear sunglasses and lots of moose, bed on crew cab could use just 12 more inches, super quiet interior doesn't let you hear road, exhaust, or engine cues, gas mileage under normal driving is at the bottom of the posted low and high, good room in the backseat, but only if the driver and copilot don't need the seats back much. You know how some cars have soul and character, well this one is so mellowed and refined, that it has been hard to find it.

I have the 4 door CrewCab SE with a 6 speed manual transmission. It's a great truck for the cost. I'm not thrilled with the manual transmission, the long throw and harsh engagement don't mesh with the rest of the vehicle. The V6 has great power, it is easy to get too fast very quickly. The super quiet cab doesn't let you hear the exhaust to know that you're accelerating hard or that the wind resistance is increasing as you break the speed limit. It is a very refined vehicle over previous models. Fit and finish are great. Having the rear seats fold up or down makes packing stuff inside convenient. The physical & mechanical characteristics are similar to the entire Nissan model line (same bumper/lights as the Pathfinder, same frame as the Titan, etc.), so hopefully parts and maintenance will be reasonable. A well equipped V6 King Cab should run you about 19k, & the bells and whistles Nismo 4x4 will push about 28k. Enjoy.

Acceleration (duh) Annoying defroster-linked AC

I absolutely love this truck. Bought it 5 days ago with 9300 miles, and I am already impressed. My particular truck is black with black trim and grey interior, and has all options available for the XE trim level (AC, Tilt wheel, CD, PW, PL,PS, Power mirrors, Remote keyless entry, variable int. wipers, bedliner w/ rail caps, sliding rear window, automatic transmission, and 5 spoke alloys. I find Nissan's styling to be unique and pleasing to the eye. This truck drives like a truck should; solid, and sure-footed. The cabin is well insulated, making road noise all but dissappear (also helps improve audio quality) All buttons, levers, and switched have a smooth, solid nissan-like feel to them. For my needs (daily driver and maybe hauling some furniture now and again) this truck more than suits my needs. Gas mileage as observed; 22 mpg, rural and city driving. Anyone who buys this truck (4 cyl version) and complains about the acceleration is missing the point of buying a 4 cylinder truck. These trucks were designed and built to haul small loads reliably and cheaply. Nothing more, nothing less. If you are a leadfooted carpenter and need to haul thousands of pounds of tools and materials, please save yourself the trouble and buy a full-size Ford, Chevy, or Dodge. This truck simply will not meet your expectations! it will wind up costing you more in the long run.I am a firm believer in Nissan products, and this truck is living proof that Nissan still builds a quality light-duty truck.

Roomy, nice looking interior Handles well with firm ride Gas milage pretty good for a 4x4 (My automatic gets 21 mpg on the highway) Rockford Fosgate stock stereo sounds really good Performs superbly in off road conditions

Weakness:

Too much plastic on the exterior of this sporty truck. I wish I had gone with body colored bumper and fender flares. I think it looks better than the black, plastic trim. Limited selection of aftermarket parts Nissan doesn't make a roof rack that fits their King cab...but I do like the bed extender.

Nissan Frontier offers the best bang for your buck. As far as ride and maneuverability, it's a truck for people who love to drive trucks. Handles well on and off the pavement. It also feels more like a full size truck. It definitely sticks out in a crowd thanks to its aggressive styling. So far, it has been a very efficient truck and has met all of my expectations; comfort and power. I just rolled 30,000 without a single problem. I plan to hold on to this truck for awhile.

Model Reviewed: NIssan Frontier XE V6 CC Long Bed

Strength:

It will go where many wouldn't dare. Nice clearance and good wheel base. The truck has a nice balance between strength, speed, torque, and flexibility and options.

Weakness:

Hmmm, well maybe a little more horsepower, but I can live with what I got off the showroom floor. And there are ways to increase the horse's on this 3.3 V6. Can you say supercharger and dual exhaust?

I purchased a 2004 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed XE V6, sports package, power package, automatic 4 X 4. I've learned in 9 months how durable, strong, and versatile this truck is. Its Super Black in color, with a grey cloth interior. How about driving on a road that doesn't even exist yet, that was just recently cut thru the woods and the roadway is fresh solid red clay, add the fact that the clay is soaked with melting snow and the road goes up and over a 900 foot high ridge and on a hard angle. Not too many small trucks owners I know would dare want to drive that road. I dropped that 2004 Frontier into 4 x 4 mood and had absolutely no problem getting up and over and down the other side of that road. I did learn one thing that day though and that is that 1 great hour of playing in wet clay, is 6 hours of cleaning. Funny how hard that clay is when it dries in a under carriage and suspension system. But the truck had no problem getting where I dare it to go! I'm a believer in this truck. The combination of 180+ horsepower and the 202 ft lbs of torque on this balanced frame is plenty. The gas mileage for a truck is no bad of 19 city and 25 highway. The highway ride is comfortable and the adjustable seats give plenty of flexibility. I've had this truck up to 95mph (Don't tell the State Troopers)without the engine showing much effort or strain and the ride was smooth for a truck. Overall, I give this truck a grade of "A" for its versatility and overall performance especially in the under $30,000 range. For its price and all you get its a great deal and a great truck.

Poor horse power, needs Supercharger

This is one tough truck. It can haul a house. I added a 3 inch body lift and 31" Nittos. The only drawback is the HP, 170 is not enough. I may add a supercharger and flowmaster. The long bed can hold my two dirt bikes, gear and ramp with no problem. I hope Nissan keeps the long bed for 05.

Strength:

Power and durability. I have towed well over its rating of 2 1/2 tons with no problem. I have hauled double rated capacity in the bed with no problems. I have even pulled out treestumps with it. The blower just sounds sweet. You can't beat a supercharger. Real off road capability right off the factory floor. Puts GM to shame.

Weakness:

Poor mileage, but it is a truck. No available bench seat. Limited selection of aftermarket parts specifically designed or packaged for it, i.e. grill guards, lift kits.

This truck rocks! People seem to run hot and cold either not liking it or absolutely loving it. I got this as model year end special, in otherwords its a 2003 bought in Jan. 2004, so I got a good deal. The motor is strong with an absolutely sick amount of low end torque. It actually makes it tough to control off the line in wet or snowy weather. The supercharger adds a good boost, but not so much as to put undue strain on the engine. Automatic tranny shifts just fine with nice overdrive feature. The truck is a dream to work on with everything being intuitive and well placed. Plenty of room under to hood for aftermarket goodies and even an extra battery with some shoehorning. The underside is very accessable. The truck does suck alot of gas, and with the supercharger its needs premium, so it gets expensive. But if you want milage, buy a VW TDI, not a pickup. I have bajaed and 4 wheeled with the truck and it is just sick. Its like a cross between a Jeep CJ and a full size truck. It is tough to high center it with all of its ground clearance and its shorter wheelbase keeps it from getting hung up. Everytime I think I hit the limit it keeps going.
