Model Reviewed: Tacoma TRD 4x4

Strength:

Sharp looking, powerful at highway speeds, and fairly comfortable in off-road situations.

Weakness:

I have been experiencing some vibration through the steering wheel in excess of 55 mph. Had the tires balanced using a special adaptor cone at the Goodyear dealer, but still notice excessive vibration. Based on other reviews I have read, I'm beginning to agree that it must be the Goodyear GSA tires that are causing the vibration.

The clutch seems to have a long travel before engaging and because of this, it gets a little wierd on the hills.

Have noticed a whistling sound around the front left corner of the vehicle.

Have to agree with most people, the seats are not very confortable.

Bought the Tacoma May 28, 1999 for $21,500. Based on the constant front end vibration and crampness of the interior, I probably would be in no hurry to recommend this vehicle anytime soon.

Strength:

This truck has ran without any problems since
1996 ...I have had zero mechanical problems
the whole time.It had one recall to have the
head gaskets on the v6 replaced...this didn't
cost me a dime.It has ran perfect before and
after the recall.The v6 starts great..I love
this engine..make sure you get overdrive option
for the automatic.I intend to drive the doors
off this truck!!I highly recommend replacing
the battery with a 9OOamp too 15OOamp deep
cycle battery for better starting in the winter.
I bought a automatic tranny instead...I lived in
Las Vegas for 3 years and all the stop lights
were nuts/tons of stoplights!!..Before I had
a 1986 Nissan hardbody 5speed.
Now I live in Indiana
since 98 and drove the truck 1,6OO miles from
Nellis AFBase...it was a fun seanic drive...
the cruise control was great for this trip! The
tachometer is nice to watch the engine rev.
This truck will haul a full size refrigerater
lying down! :-)I like that on newer Tacomas
the cup holder is now on the floor...instead of
above the radio and climate-controls are now
rotary-dials.

Weakness:

Hear me Toyota Corporation...these are my
complaints!!
The sheetmetal is thin all over...the bed-fenders
were dented by a small pallet of blocks inside
the bed.The seatbelt-return springs are junk..
When closing the doors the saging-seat belts
are always caught in the door bottoms! The
aluminum-alloy wheels are cheesy-junk...because
the centercaps are plastic with cheap spray paint
on them...the centercap paint will peel off
after the 3rd year.(Just buy truck with basic-
steel wheels and buy your own aftermarket
aluminum-wheels.)
Toyota...please make the
centercaps solid-aluminum or stainless-steel?
The rear springs can't handle any weight...I
put a 55-barrel of kerosene back there and
the bed saged bad!...It can't handle a 55-gallon
barrel of fuel and I paid 23 grand for this truck!?
I recommend adding helper springs.
The 6O/4O bench seat is not comfortable and way to
firm.I would recommend bucket seats...unless
you want to sleep across the benchseat on a long
road trip?..in reststops.I wish this truck was
6-8 inches wider.

new version:Dakota.....I refuse to buy a fORD...
the Las Vegas ford dealer was a total snob!!!
If he was nice to me I would have paid all-
cash for a new truck!!I will NEVER buy a ford!
Ive seen several ford trucks broke down along
highways and have never seen a Toyota truck
broke down along a highway...and I'm 32 years old.

have bought a diesel-Tacoma!!!3Ompg diesel
would be nice!!Diesels last a loooonng time.
...for all the hype about Toyota quality...
they are cutting corners...I would still
buy another Tacoma for its smooth/quiet
running v6 engine:-)

Strength:

I have a std cab completely stipped, all it has is cruise control, but I love this truck more than life itself, over 200,000 miles on it, and I just finally replaced the headlights. I am a 25 year old man and trust me the ladies go for this baby big time. My 2.4l can do burn outs and burn ins whenever I like. good gas mileage and realiablity

Weakness:

Stereo, must be custom done, I have 3jl83 and kick panels, also the body panels are thin so they dent easily. could use a better bench seat.

this truck has been with me through it all, Ive had camper shells on it, a lid(which I think looks better) through 20+ women not counting all the one nighter, plently of camping trips, Ive taken this bad boy on many of my mexican surf trips. I love you truck and I want the whole world to know. I finally have the most amazing system in my truck, if any of you are interested in my design for my box please email me and Ill send you a pic of it, trust me its tough to get good sound out of a std cab, but I did and I can show you how

This is my first new truck I have ever owned. I was going to buy a new car, but when I drove this truck I feel in love with it. It rides better then most cars. I have the regular cab, 5 speed, etc... It does not have to many extras, but that's what I was looking for. It's a blast to take off road. I have plenty of leg room and head space.

Weakness:

The Location of the clock could be better, but it's not a big deal.

Over this Truck is great. I am getting about 25mpg with it. I have the 4 cyclinder model.

Little rattles, squeaks, no biggie, Shocks a little spongy( just add the bilsteins and it'll ride much better)

I am a chevy Guy all the way. But when I wanted a newer truck, The newer Chevy's ,Ford's , Dodge's I test drove , didn't have the quality I was looking for. If I'm going to pay 18 grand for a used truck, I want quality. I found it when I drove my Tacoma. I take alot of flack from my car club guys who own Chevy's And Dodge's,,but I have to laugh at the guy who has had his Durango back to the dealer 8 times in the last year for defects. And another freind who can't stop his NEW!!! Ram. I have never had my Tacoma in the shop, with general maintenence, I'll swear she'll make 200,000 before I'll have to make an appointment. You want a GOOD truck BUY A TACOMA!!! You want somthing else? HIT A JunkYard!!

Model Reviewed: Tacoma SR5 Xtra cab V6 4x4

Strength:

Styling--The exterior design of the Toyota is the best of any small truck available. It sits as tall as most full size trucks.
Wheels--The Toyota alloy wheels look great. I wouldn't change them for anything. I don't know why people buy them, take them off and sell them on ebay for much less than they paid for them, then replace them with rims that (I think) don't look as good as the original ones.
Power--The 190 hp V6 packs a punch.
Looks--This truck is simply the best looking and performing compact truck on the market.
Durability--What can you say......it's a Toyota!

Weakness:

Interior--Radio is a little weak and clock is poorly placed.
Xtra cab--Poorly designed, seats should be facing each other with cup holder in between them (like the Ranger's). Cupholder that folds up from behind passenger seat is useless
Price--Fully loaded, it can be a bit pricey but look for a used one a few years old and you can get a deal. You get what you pay for!

I would definitely recommend the Tacoma to a first time truck buyer. You will love the styling. You will love how long it last. I love mine, and hope to get 200,000 miles out of it. The gas mileage is not that great, but no truck with a V6 and 4x4 is. The ride is a little rough. If you add some weight in the back it is a little smoother, but most truck behave that way. I have read other reviews about the seats being uncomfortable, I think that is personal preference. I have drive my on the interstate for 3 hours at a time and felt fine.

If a new one is out of your price range look for one a couple of years old. I got mine in 2000. It is loaded, power everything, bucket seats, even has a sunroof! It had 45,000 miles when I bought it for $16,000. I would rather drive my Tacoma than an new Ranger, Frontier, or S10.

Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger, and Chevy S10. None of these even come close to the Tacoma in either the looks, realibility, durability, past or present reviews, or consumer reports. If you want a truck that last, get a Tacoma, Period!

Model Reviewed: PickUp 4x4

Strength:

1. Reliable! Never broke down in the 7 years I have owned it
2. Retains it's value. Paid 11 for it 7 years ago and am getting ready to trade it in on a 2001 xtra cab V6 4x4....dealer offered me 4500! could probably sell it out right close to 6.
3. Incredible off road. I have had the thing airborn, sideways and up to the bumpers in mud, never came close to getting stuck...still all stock.
4. Chicks dig it

Weakness:

1. Bed bounces around on bumpy corners, make for some interesting moments
2. Occasional clunking noise in the back
3. Too small inside, get the xtra cab
4. have to get out to lock in the 4wheel drive..that's just cause it's an older modell

I love this truck. I am sorry to get rid of it, but i have lived too long with out 1) room to store stuff 2) AC! The new one will have it all. If you want to go out and get a reliable 4x4, this is the one. All my friends with Chevy's etc have been in and out of the shop...they have also been stuck at the bottom of the hill looking up at me as my little Toyoya keeps motoring on with out stopping for anything....Love this little truck

Strength:

Very dependable, nice body style and good-looking vehicle. I love the extended cab and I’m quit pleased with all the added features.

Weakness:

Haven't found any yet, but then I've only had this truck 3 1/2 years.
Sorry, I have to take that back. Everytime I turn around my wife is taking it and leaving me with the Bronco.

This is my third Toyota pickup, my last Toyota was a stick, no air, no cruise, no power. I guess I’m getting old because I wanted something more like a car, you know… cruise – power windows – nice stereo – air. Almost bought a car and then I came across this truck. It was loaded. Now I have the best of both worlds. I got everything I wanted in a car plus I can still haul stuff in the bed.

Strength:

Car like ride/Monster in the dirt
Well designed-rugged dependable
Excellent power

Weakness:

Stereo system sucks. The rear speakers are useless
After market accesories are expensive
Thin plastic on the bottom of the doors vibrate
I know this is petty, but these cars should have locking gas caps.
The digital clock is not placed well.

The first night I got my new Tacoma I took it in the dirt. It had rained that day so it there was a lot of muddy patches. I roared over dirt hills and through solid mud ditches when, uh oh, I got stuck. Now it is time to test out that differential locker. I pressed the buttoon, put the car in low geared, and rocked myself out of the mud. I was impressed.

On the street the Tacoma is extremely car like. I just hate it when those lower door panels buzz though. The rear speakers are also weak. There is also no room for stuff behind the passenger seats, but that is a small trade off for the extra leg room.

Finally, I am not all in to having people stare when I drive down the street, bit this car is attractive. People do check out the truck when I drive around.

I got a hell uv a deal on this pick up and it still was not cheap. The extra money is worth the piece of mind. I knkow I will get fifteen years out of this truck.

ACCELERATION, smoother ride than other trucks, nice payload and power. WOW can't get over that ACCELERATION.

Weakness:

OK, the looks suck stock. Put some rims on it and tint the windows dark. Then it looks sweet. I'm dropping the rear 2 inches as well. Stereo sucks but I replace that stuff right away anyway. I confess I am an audiophile. Too little room behind the seats. I need to build a custom sub box for this sucer.

Great truck, all I can say, don't have a single problem with it Toyota is so reliable it's a wonder we don't all drive them. Good quality in everything. I got a good price too for 35000 on the truck!!
