Strength:

very comfortable, good power in mtns.
i like how it always starts in cold weather
thats about it

Weakness:

terrible auto transmission problems, suspension sucks and
weak speakers with stereo(the speakers cant even handle the factory bass) there alot I dont like

i always heard of toyota's being the most reliable, longest lasting trucks on the road but just make sure you dont get an automatic transmission.(manual is funner to drive anyway)
my friend has a 81 toyota 4x4 p/u and he hasn't had any major problems with it. I geuss i just got a melon. I have a problem with my 4-runner and I have had it to 4 different local shops every one of the head mechanics said they can't find the problem I have put probably over 2,000 dollars into trying to fix it and have gotten no results. Now i am stuck with a car i can't sell and can't fix. I tried to go to the dealership to get it fixed and they said I needed 10,000 dollars worth of work. What a bunch of bulls!*t. the dealership isn't nothing but a bunch of gold diggers. I would only buy another toyota if I was proved that they now make quality trucks.

Strength:

Dependable.
Everything works right all the time and the mechanics find it easy to work on.

Weakness:

Spare tire location, twitchy handling at speed when carrying more than 800 lbs.

Paid About $12k list $13k. After 97,000 miles this truck has been in the shop once for a rear end job , $360.
Most dependable vehicle I ever had. I'm buying a new one this month and I think enough of it to get it with an auto and extended cab so my daughter can use it....and I wouldn't send my baby out in nuthin' I wasn't sure was gettin' back. Think about it...have you ever seen a Tacoma sitting by the side of the road with a hankie tied to the antenna? They run, that's all they have to do.

Model Reviewed: 4X4 pick 'em up

Strength:

This truck is extremely reliable. It is great in deep snow. It handles very crisply for a pick up. It rides well enough on the highway that even 16 hour marathons are bearable. This truck also has a nice tight turning radius.

Weakness:

In '94 there was only one 4cyl available and it had an anemic 116 horsepower. The engine is no match for the Rocky Mountains. Also the doors do not stay open when I am parked on an incline.

Sticker price was $18,891 I paid $13,995 when the truck was new. This is my second Toy pick up. I have put over 350,000 miles on these two trucks over the course of the last 11 years. In all of that time I have spent less than $500 in repairs. Almost all of the repairs were routine upkeep.(Brakes, hoses etc.) Neither clutch has had to be replaced. The biggest problem I have had is that the front main seal on my 2wd started to leak when the truck had 160,000 miles on it. It cost me $36.00 to have that fixed including the part. In 11 years I have never been broken down and have never had either truck fail to start even at
-30 F. In light of the new engines available with more power this must be the best bang for your buck vehicle you can buy. I have 5 friends/family members who own Toyota trucks. None of these people have had any repairs to speak of either. The combined mileage of these 5 Toyota trucks is over 800,000 miles. This is a great play/adventure (great for hauling your playthings) truck that does well in off road situations. Very serious off roading wouild require modification. If a small pick up is of use to you I would greatly recommend the Toyota. The four stars for the overall rating is because of the lack of horsepower.

Model Reviewed: Toyota Tacoma Prerunner

Strength:

Reliable, good power, comfortable and looks good.
I chose the Horizon Blue Metallic color.
If you can get a wheel on it, it'll go over it.
Ground clearance is good, especially with the TRD suspension package, which I highly recommend.
You need to pass someone? No problem. The 190hp V6 will make a statement when you mash the pedal.
Take basic care of it and it will go forever.

Weakness:

Bad oil filter placement. Toyota should be ashamed of themselves for that...
Shallow truck bed and flimsy body panels. You can dent it just by leaning on it.
Prerunners are only offered with an automatic tranny and it doesn't always shift correctly when you stomp on the gas.
That can make you second guess yourself when it redlines before it shifts.
Toyota offered really ugly color choices this year.

This one stickered for a little over $25,000.00 and I paid just under $21,000.00 for it, lock stock and barrel.
Do your homework before you go in to buy it and you'll come away a winner.
I would whole heartedly recommend the Toyota Tacoma Prerunner XtraCab to anyone who wants a great truck.
Bottom line:
I love my truck.

transmission has been acting up on me

I have owned this truck for about 4 years now. I think about upgrading from time to time but just cant get myself to give it up. I have the pre-tacoma wich is better in some ways and not as good in others. The tacoma has much better power but the full box frame on my truck was done away with on the new model and torsion bars were replaced with springs. Springs offer a softer ride but are not progressive like tortion bars and so have worse performance. Definetly recomend these trucks but make sure you get an extra-cab. My shocks wore out a couple of years and I had to replace them, which turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to my truck. If you already own one of these trucks go to the store tomorrow and buy new shocks!

This is a great truck! I have put 46,000 miles on it in two years, including an epic trip out west. It has had no problems at all. Plenty powerful, Toyota fit and finish, and looks great. Great resale value. If you are looking for a small truck this is the one to buy. I may never own another GM or Ford!

$20,500 for a SR5 V6 4X4 automatice, with cruise control, tilt steering, alloy wheels, no power or ABS.

The engine is great. Bone stock and my acceleration is amazing. Considering it's great height it handles amazingly. You feel like you are sitting a mile up, and you practically are. The Tacoma is built as the ultimate play truck.
There are endless upgrade available. So far I have diamond plate bed caps, a bedliner, Wet Okole neoprene seat covers (Black with a big blue stripe), Husky floor liners, PIAA "Super White" bulbs (Coming Soon). Eventually I will have the TRD Supercharger yielding 260hp and a bunch of torque. The Tacoma blows other compact trucks out of the water and creates it's own category. It has full Size ground clearance and power, compact handling and sizing.
It's a little on the pricey side but it has a fabulous resale value adn durability.

'98 X-cab 4x4 Limited TRD in Black-Can't beat it!
This is my third Toyota 4x4 truck since 1984. I change the oil & filter every 3,000 miles, rotate the tires at 8,000 miles and nothing else has to be done. I have yet to have a Toyota truck in the shop...Can't wait to move up to a Tundra
Since I have long legs seats with short seat coushions tire me out quickly. This is the only truck big or small that doesn't wear me out on long trips.
Averaged 20-21 MPG on trips to Chicago,Western North Carolina and Tennesee. Good power in the Mountains. After upgrading the entire audio equipment from Crutchfield I would rather travel in my truck than with my wifes car.('98 Honda Accord)

Strength:

Appearance. Size. Looks and (near) capability of 4x4, without the added insurance cost, weight or drivetrain maintenance.

Weakness:

Shallow bed. Had to replace the 6-CD factory changer because bass disappeared in right front speaker. No third door.

1999 PreRunner XCab 2.7L Paid about $20,000, on the floor at $23,000. I'm looking forward to putting on many miles. Ideal for someone looking for value. I keep hearing how the 2.7L engine will go forever. One owner put 375K miles on the engine without an overhaul. I know one day I'll need a car and will get one. I will always have this truck.

I will put my tacoma up against any other brand. If you want a real truck, come try the tacoma out.
